Almost 800 men have been held at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility since it was established in 2002. Today, fewer than 150 remain. Despite the fact that more than half of current detainees have been cleared for transfer from the base, and in spite of the executive order signed by President Barack Obama in 2009 ordering the closure of the prison within one year, there's no indication it will be shuttered anytime soon.
VICE News traveled to Guantanamo to find out what the hell is going on. After a tightly controlled yet bizarre tour of the facility, we sought out a former detainee in Sarajevo and a former guard in Phoenix to get their unfiltered impressions of what life is like at Gitmo.

The first U.S. military flight to deport migrants from the United States to Guantanamo Bay has departed and is expected to land Tuesday evening, two U.S. officials said. It is the first step in an expected surge in the number of migrants sent to the Navy base in Cuba, which for decades was primarily used to detain foreigners associated with the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

More than 20 years after 9/11 and the Cole bombing, the alleged masterminds of these attacks haven't gone to trial.
VICE went to the Military Commissions at Guantanamo Bay, a secretive legal process where prosecutors seek the death penalty for men who were tortured by the CIA.

FRONTLINE and NPR followed the trail of one of the final detainees released by the Obama administration from the prison at Guantanamo Bay. (Aired 2017)

When President Barack Obama first took office, he signed an executive order to close the controversial military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba — where the U.S. has held terror suspects for years without charges. Though he didn’t succeed in closing Gitmo, a symbol of the post-9/11 “war on terror,” Obama made a final push to clear out the camp before President Donald Trump took over.
The documentary “Out of Gitmo” examines the challenges and complexities of releasing men who were once deemed “indefinite detainees” — those never charged with a crime but considered too great a risk to let go.
“Out of Gitmo” was a collaboration with NPR and WGBH News. The writer and producer was James Jacoby. The correspondent was NPR/WGBH News reporter Arun Rath. The senior producer was Frank Koughan. The senior investigations editor for NPR was Robert Little. “Out of Gitmo” was a production with Left/Right Docs. The executive producers for Left/Right Docs were Ken Druckerman and Banks Tarver. The executive producer for FRONTLINE was Raney Aronson-Rath.

The city was founded in 1797 in the area of a farm named Santa Catalina. The toponym "Guantánamo" means, in Taíno language, "land between the rivers".
Geography
Overview
The municipality is mountainous in the north, at Humboldt National Park, where it overlays the Sierra Maestra (mountains), and borders the Windward Passage of the Caribbean Sea in the south. It is crossed by the Bano, Guantánamo, Yateras, Guaso, San Andrés and Sabanalamar rivers. The city is spread with a square plan and is crossed in the middle by the Carretera Central highway. Guantánamo Bay is a natural harbour south of it.
They haven’t departed. They haven’t gone home. The trials haven’t started. No evidence shown. They don’t get no visits. They don’t get no calls, and nobody tells them nothing at all. The headphones and the blindfolds, the days and the weeks. The overalls of orange, the manacled feet. A Kafka-esque nightmare. A legal black hole. A corner of Cuba named Guantanamo. The warmongers tell us they gave up their rights when they attacked us and our way of life. Oh but our way of life depends on the law. On liberty and freedom and justice for all. Well they talk about justice in the US of A. It’s the land of the free and the home of the brave. Yea, but outside of America anything goes. From Bagram to Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo. In 70's Ulster the government thought if they locked up the suspects the terror would stop. But all that internment actually did was provide the Provos with more angry kids. Oh but sometimes I wonder if our leaders really care? They rely on these demons to keep people scared. And unwilling to question the fate of those poor souls who lie rotting in the cages of Guantanamo They run for it down the road, With an arm around her waist, He leads her to a place,
