Mindless drivel pap contest, more like ... And undoubtedly the ancestor of the over-produced, badly written, so-called "reality TV" shows that infest network television today.
The fact that people get extremely political and/or nationalistic over this crap is sad, in the old meaning of the word.
Why, exactly, is CO2 seen as a major issue, yet nobody complains about Nitrous Oxide or water vapor as greenhouse gasses? The scientific ignorance being displayed is astonishing ... But then the political haymakers like it that way, don't they?
Call me when they are growing decent wine grapes around Hadrian's Wall ... or they are forecasting a Frost Faire on the Thames.
Until then, I'll continue pointing & giggling whenever I notice a so-called "green" person tossing a mercury laden CFL into the trash ...
First of all, I have personally caught a "Great White"[1], just off the coast from Bude (actually, just off Northcott Mouth). This was in 1978 or 1979. I have Polaroids, and a scar between the thumb and forefinger of my left hand as mementos. I released him/her. He/she didn't thank me. That's where I got the nick ...
Second, I have run across sharks of many stripes whilst surfing and boating here in Northern California, including Great Whites. Not a single one of them showed any interest in making me into a snack, much less a main course. But then I grok what "food chain" means ... and how it works ...
Try not to look like a wounded seal ... you'll live longer, in any walk of life.
[1] For small values of Great White ... only 3.5 feet, or thereabouts.
We're here to help you!
(Never mind the word "cyber", which automatically indicates complete and total ignorance of all things computer and network related ... but a billion quid? In THIS economy????!?? You have GOT to be kidding me ... It'll all end in tears ... no government agency, anywhere on this damp rock, has any clue how computers work.)
I never post here AC.
"What, precisely, does Microsoft have to do with this?"
Please note that I didn't say "Microsoft is to blame", rather I was pointing out that the Microsoft-centric software world has serious issues from the perspective of RealWorld[tm] security.
"Oh, and you forgot the Linux penguin"
Where, exactly, did I mention Linux? There are many secure OSes available that are neither from Redmond, nor the Linux camp. Besides, Icons are for AOLers.
"it's required on arrogant non-sequitur posts attacking Microsoft."
Project much?
He has plenty to say. Your faith doesn't allow you to understand his message.
Fact is that the world has been both warmer and colder in historical times. Regardless of the ignorant hand wringing and political haymaking, in all reality humans do not fully understand the mechanism(s) involved. Claiming people are the root cause is hubris, at best.
"1) do the americans have to learn russian or do the russians have to learn english?"
In answer, a question: If a person who knows two languages is bi-lingual, and a person who knows three languages is tri-lingual, what do you call a person who only knows one language? Answer below ... [1]
"Weather or not men are able to have sex"
Speaking as one of said troglodytes, men are nearly always able to have sex (barring medical/physical issues). Funny thing is, so are women. Maybe we evolved together, and aren't as dissimilar as society would have the masses believe?
As a side-note, that's an appalling spell of wether[2] ...
[1] Answer: an American. Note CAPS.
[2] Yes, I know, it's "whether" ... I have around 1700 head of sheep and several dozen goats, and thought it funny in this context. So shoot me ;-)
Yes, that Jerry Brown ... but I wouldn't pay to much attention to the political rantings of Jello "shock people to make a buck" Biafra ... I mean, he DID go to school at UC Santa Cruz, land of plentiful cheep drugs, where a local saying is "The mind is a terrible thing, let's get wasted".
Same place they store it today. Carrier groups displace a LOT of water, a largish percentage of that tonnage is ammunition ... Iran doesn't have the capacity in "small boats" to extinguish the manufacturing/replenishing capability of the US (or any small European nation, for that matter). Several dozen pairs of properly trained humans throwing lead down range is the cheapest, easiest, and most foolproof method of dissuading this form of attack, and will be into the foreseeable future. Rayguns are SciFi today ... and probably won't be seen in the field on a regular basis until long after everyone reading this is pushing up daisies.
Tim: If you have to ask, you aren't properly licensed. If you're a Yank, here's a good place to start learning (probably NSFW in the UK and Oz ...):

"According to Northrop, the MLD "burned through small boat sections" in tests conducted last month at the Potomac River Test Range, indicating that its performance over water is up to the job."
Somehow I suspect my .50 Browning will be more effective ... And I really doubt that Iran has more small boats than the US has the capability of putting .50 ammo down-range.
... can't drive.
I mean, how hard is it? "Gee, look, the road is going into a lake[1] ... maybe I better stop and rethink my route a trifle." The Darwin Awards are going to be full of Nintendo Generation graduates for years to come, methinks.
[1] Up a footpath & over a cliff in the wilds of Yorkshire, or wherever.
It's smoke and mirrors, trying to misdirect from the real problem.
That problem being that the total fucking numpties in charge have not only approved of using Microsoft software for SCADA, but have ALSO approved of attaching said systems to TheInternetAtLarge[1].
The cluelessness being displayed at national levels is absolutely breathtaking.
[1]Whatever that is.
"US National Electronic Injury Surveillance System"
Never heard of it. And I suspect I'll never hear of it again.
"Americans sustained 696 "video game-related injuries" during the period 2004 to 2009."
Wow. All of 116 non-defined "injuries" a year, USA-wide. How many were injured by bicycles, skateboards and ice skates in the same time frame? I could ask the same of alcohol, tobacco, salt, sugar, fat, and the good old bathtub ...
As much as I personally think that video games are a waste of time, minds and resources, methinks there are better places to spend research dollars.
Why do people get all up in arms about this kind of thing? I mean, seriously, when you think about it somebody, somewhere, is being assaulted as you read this. This is a fact, whether you like it or not. The likes of google trying to gloss over this reality doesn't change anything ... There was a body in that street, when the goocar drove through. Accept it. Learn from it.
And maybe try to avoid something similar happening closer to home ...
... seem to think that they can promote internet freedom by censoring what they don't want to see on the internet?
Isn't this roughly the same as fucking to promote virginity?
Teenagers. Go figure. Don't give 'em any more press, they aren't worth the column inches.
Does Nic have even half a clue about what he is commenting on? I mean, really ... "restoring from un-checked backups might be a bad idea after an infection". Gee, you think?
How about "you might get re-infected after cleaning out the malware ... if you didn't actually clear out the malware in the first place". Really? Please, tell me more ... so I can point & laugh at you, and maybe take your job after you are fired for being incompetent. Not that Symantec could pay me enough ... I mean would YOU want that on your resume/CV?
Gawd/ess. The mind boggles. Fucking numpties.
Meg's an idiot. A rich one, perhaps, but an idiot nonetheless. She always has been, and always will be. If the fine folks in California vote her into office, we're pulling up stakes & moving our HQ to our (already existing) facility in Oregon.
Keep on spinning, Meg. In several senses of the term. Some of us don't buy into it, but at least it gives us something to talk about at the water cooler ...
"I recall a story from the late and much lamented John Peel. Finally giving up the arguments with his wife on direction finding on a holiday trip in Scotland"
You mean "the Pig", not "his wife", Shirley?[1]
One of my favorite memories of John was his interview with Siouxsie Sioux, and his playing of the entire Banshees "The Scream" album over the air a couple weeks before it's general release. Auntie Beeb allowing the uncensored replay the following Saturday afternoon was astonishing. I managed to record it on half-inch tape (actual half-inch tape, not slang for cassette ;-)
The other favorite memory was his first (for the UK) airing of The B52s "Rock Lobster". At the end of the tune, he mused "I wonder what tanning butter is? Probably something that Paul Gambaccini would spill onto a marzipan omelet ..."
[1] Yes, I know, her name is Sheila. Rest in piece, John. You are missed by many, world wide. Pardon me while I play Roy Harper's "When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease", with a tear in my eye ...
Uh ... did you not notice where I wrote "Please note that I think both sides in this particular matter are noisy, attention-seeking idiots who should grow up and seek lives outside the gutters of society."?[1]
Learn to read for content ... it'll do you a world of good.[2]
[1] That would be an example of grinding.
[2] That would be attempting to teach sharpening.
"It would appear that careful comment reading is a two way street."
From my perspective, it's a one-way street.
"I really hope you don't start every sentance with "uh....." in real life"
Nope. Only when I'm astounded by cluelessness. Takes my breath away, occasionally.
(Side note: That's splelled "sentence". HTH, HAND.)
"Coates believes the malefactor has been recording evil messages onto cassette tapes which are then unspooled to enclose and hence curse their target areas."
And people actually pay attention to this nutter? I think we've finally found proof that the human race is ultimately doomed to extinction ...
