Nana is a supporting character of Your Throne. She was a maid in the House of Solon and the unofficial caretaker of Medea Solon who was severely injured as punishment and eventually killed by Helio Niccolo after the crown princess competition.[1]
Appearance[]
Nana appears as a middle-aged woman with ash-brown hair that is often styled in a bun and clipped with a maid headpiece, gentle and slanted amber eyes and a small mole under the right side of her lips.
As a servant of the House of Solon, she typically wears a nondescript, black maid dress, complete with a white apron and sensible shoes.
Personality[]
Nana had a warm and affectionate personality where she was the only person to properly care for Medea Solon in the House of Solon. She was generous and selfless, willing to use her meager salary to buy gifts for the young lady. She was extremely optimistic and valued happiness above occupational achievements. Although she has a gentle disposition, Nana was courageous and would willingly defy the rules of social hierarchy to protect those she cares for. She tended to give others the benefit of the doubt and maintained a positive perspective on life.
Background[]
Although she was born in a noble house [2], Nana entered the House of Solon as a maid and took it upon herself to become the primary caretaker of the young Lady Medea Solon in place of the neglectful Duke Thesion Solon and Duchess Meti Solon. Aware that affection was necessary for proper emotional development in early childhood, Nana raised Medea with the love she lacked from her parents. On Medea's eighth birthday, the duke and duchess seemingly forgot to attend the celebration. Nana used her meager maid salary to purchase a teddy bear from a local shop and gave it to Medea as a birthday present, claiming that it was a consolation gift from her parents for their absence. When other maids chastised her for lying to Medea, Nana insisted that young children desired love over luxuries and materialistic items. Throughout the years, Medea would often compromise her own health and happiness to live up to her parents' high expectations. Nana attempted to dissuade Medea from taking such extremes, emphasizing that she did not have to live as the duke and duchess's puppet. Medea insisted that she was willing to take any opportunity to rise in power above her father, including marrying the crown prince.[3]
Several years later, Medea befriended the young socialite, Psyche Callista. Nana expressed joy for the new addition to Medea's social circle, which previously only consisted of Helio Niccolo.[4] Medea and Helio fully supported Medea during the crown princess contest, confident that she would win due to her extensive knowledge and studies. On the day the results of the competition were to be announced, Nana promised to welcome Medea home with a freshly baked pumpkin pie.[5] The Solon family returned home, shocked that Medea had unexpectedly lost the seat of crown princess despite winning the competition. Thesion beat Nana in a fit of fury, punishing her for failing to properly raise Medea in his stead. Medea rushed in to save Nana, insisting that Nana was not to be blamed for the loss. As Nana warned Medea to run away, Medea dove in front of her to block her from the duke's cane. Medea was knocked unconscious for several days, during which Nana was beaten unconscious. Assumed dead, Nana was then dragged into the woods and repeatedly stabbed before thrown off of a cliff.[2]
Watching from the shadows, Helio made eye contact with her and realized with horror that she was still alive. An assassin then arrived to murder the servants, revealing that he was hired by Thesion to ensure complete silence of the entire incident. Horrified by what had transpired, Helio rushed to Nana's side and promised to take her back to his mansion. Nana attempted to soothe his tears as he apologized profusely for not intervening, confessing that he assumed she had already died. The two of them struggled to walk back to the marquess' manor, impeded by the heavy downpour. Nana eventually begged him to kill her out of mercy, confessing that the pain was too overwhelming to handle. She remarked that before she was rendered unconscious by Thesion, she had warned Medea to escape the terrors of the House of Solon, momentarily forgetting the strength and perseverance within Medea. With no weapons on hand, Helio was forced to acquiesce to Nana's request by using his bare hands to strangle her. Thesion declared Nana's death as the work of bandits.[1]
Relationships[]
Medea Solon[]
Nana was a maid in the House of Solon who raised Medea in place of the neglectful duke and duchess. She therefore shared a very close, maternal relationship with Medea. Unlike Medea's biological mother Meti Solon, Nana deeply cared for the young lady and acted as a genuine mother figure. Medea sincerely cherished Nana as the maid was the only person in the House of Solon who showed Medea unconditional love. Throughout the years, Nana attempted to help Medea prioritize her own needs and wishes above those of her parents. When Medea pushed herself to meet her parents' high expectations, often jeopardizing her health, Nana was the one who soothed her tears and comforted her. Medea treasured the teddy bear that Nana gave her as a child, keeping it with her until the day she became engaged to the crown prince. Nana was horrified that Duke Thesion Solon was selling his daughter off to the imperial family to gain status and attempted to persuade Medea from entering the engagement. Medea saw this as an opportunity to gain a higher social status than that of her father and assured Nana that she was entering the engagement willingly. That night, she burned the teddy bear that Nana gave her in the fireplace.[3]
During the crown princess contest, Nana fully supported and encouraged Medea that she promised to bake a pumpkin pie for Medea as a congratulatory gift for winning the crown princess contest.[5] When Duke Solon punished Nana for Medea's loss in the crown princess contest, Medea attempted to save Nana. Before her final moments, Nana warned Medea to stay away and run. Medea dove in front of Nana to save her from the Duke was knocked unconscious for several days.
After discovering that Nana died from the duke's beating, Medea and Helio Niccolo retrieved her abandoned corpse from the river and mourned.[2]
Helio Niccolo[]
Since Helio and Medea Solon were close friends since childhood, Nana often supervised them as they spent time together at the House of Solon. Nana and Helio shared mutual affection towards Medea and natural grew close to one another over time. Helio mentioned once that Nana was the only person allowed to treat him like a child other than Medea.[5] After Medea lost the crown princess contest to Psyche Callista, Helio watched as servants of the House of Solon dragged Nana's corpse from the Duke's Manor to a nearby river, unable to intervene without revealing himself to Duke Thesion Solon. He recovered her body from the river with Medea and mourned over her death.[2]
Thesion Solon[]
Because Thesion neglected his daughter since childhood, Nana took it upon herself to care for Medea in his stead.[3] She was not afraid to stand up to the duke for Medea's sake. After the crown princess contest, Thesion punished Nana, claiming that she was responsible for failing to raise Medea properly. He severely beat her with a cane until she died. He then ordered to have her body mutilated and tossed into a river.[2]
Meti Solon[]
After Duke Thesion Solon murdered Nana, Meti reminded him that Nana came from a noble family. The duchess suggested to mask the origins of Nana's death. Under the duke's orders, Nana's body was mutilated and unceremoniously thrown into a river.[2]
Psyche Callista[]
Although Helio Niccolo was skeptical of Psyche's loyalty towards Medea Solon, Nana was delighted that Medea's social circle expanded and she welcomed Psyche into the House of Solon and approved of her friendship with Medea.[5]
