Boyle Heights is a Chicano neighborhood only a couple of miles east of booming downtown Los Angeles. It’s dumpy, but not hugely homicidal because the Mexican gangs keep the blacks out (the 2000 Census found Boyle Heights to be 94% Hispanic and only 0.9% black). So it has become a natural choice for gentrifying white people getting squeezed out of the Arts District in DTLA by rising rents.
From the New York Times:
California Today: A Gallery Flees and Neighborhood Activists Cheer
Mike McPhate
CALIFORNIA TODAY MARCH 15, 2017Often referred to as the Ellis Island of Los Angeles, the neighborhood east of downtown known as Boyle Heights has been the first stop for several waves of immigration. Since the 1940s, it has transformed into a largely Mexican-American enclave and the center of Chicano culture and activism in the city.
The “Ellis Island” reference is a dog-whistle that Boyle Heights was heavily Jewish a century ago. But the Jews all white-flighted, and Boyle Heights has been not all that immigrant ever since Chicanos figured out many decades ago that low rents in an extremely convenient central location surrounded by several generations of your people were a pleasant combination. (Recent immigrants tend to be relatives from the Old Country of well-established residents.)
As other parts of Los Angeles have seen real estate prices climb steadily, many in Boyle Heights have expressed concern about gentrification, particularly after several art galleries moved into an industrial stretch. The battle between the galleries and activists reached a peak last fall when someone spray-painted a vulgar statement condemning “white art” on the door of one gallery and a hate-crime investigation was opened.
Almost from the moment it opened its doors last year Pssst, a nonprofit gallery, and its creators, have been the focus of protests and criticism on social media.
Last month, they announced they could no longer tolerate it. They were closing up shop.
“This persistent targeting, which was often highly personal in nature, was made all the more intolerable because the artists we engaged are queer, women, and/or people of color,” they said on their website. “We could no longer continue to put already vulnerable communities at further risk.”
Defend Boyle Heights, one of the activist groups that has called for a boycott of the galleries, said that it considered the closing a victory and that it hoped other galleries would soon follow suit.

TERRITORIALISM IS THE WAY OF THE WORLD
That includes financial territorialism. Young people should declare government debt to be not of their territory and refuse to pay it. Government debt is just stealing financial territory from the future. Declare odious debt and refuse to pay.
The Boyle area of Los Angeles and who controls it is small business. The bigger question is the financial territorialism of the globally coordinated central banks.
As for student loans, there is no "need" to borrow a ton of money to attend college. See Zack Bissonnette's book "Debt Free U." Taking on substantial debt is an UNNECESSARY and unwise choice, and adults should generally not expect to force others to pay for the consequences of their foolish decisions. Blame the parents who didn't teach their kids common sense and longer-term thinking, not the lenders or the government or anyone else.
Chicanos play for keeps, always!

I used to hear “vulnerable” used to describe, e.g. poor children who don’t have anybody who will notice signs of abuse, or prostitutes, who might not be noticed if a serial killer starts picking them off.
Women in general, being half the adult population, seem like a stretch to include in that category. PoCs, too, by similar reasoning. “Queer” people are vulnerable insofar as the behavior that they’ve come to define themselves by is extremely risky (might be a bad idea to raw dog it on meth with >200 dudes a year, but God forbid you say that). Hard to see how that makes them a “vulnerable community”. Even the sainted Matthew Shepard died due to his crystal meth dealing.
I have a grudging respect for the Left’s tightening stranglehold on the English language.
We are fighting back. "Anti-white" has gained a lot of currency. We originally discussed it on here in comments. Now I am seeing it everywhere.
The left has the (supposed) right using 'she' and 'her' for the generic pronoun. Are you a fan of their inconsistency? Or is it their arbitrary nature you admire? Maybe their Orwellian 1984 model of the future? It certainly excites respect from many. When our glorious Soviet (er, Venezuelan) future has been realized, will you grudgingly respect them for your time in the Gulag?
"Highly personal in nature" probably means aggressive following, sexual harassment, and murmured Mexican endearments that could mean, "I find out where you live," for all the harassee can tell.
To directly confront a man with tattoos on his face and his hand on his cojones would be punching up for the artists described, and vulnerable is a fairly exact word here.Replies: @Steve Sailer, @Negrolphin Pool

Shepard had enrolled at the University of Wyoming about six weeks before he was killed. He hadn't lived in Wyoming for several years, and his family had lived in Casper, not Laramie. Aaron McKinney was a roofing company employee living in a trailer park with his baby mamma and child; Shepard was the son of a petroleum engineer who'd attended a boarding school when his father was transferred abroad. The notion that these two were more than tangentially acquainted beggars belief. (And, while we're at it, local law enforcement has said for attribution that Stephen Jimenez notion that Matthew Shepard was middle-management in a drug trafficking operation is a fantasy).Replies: @Steve Sailer

Capital will eat us all eventually, but I can't blame the Boylistas for taking exception.
I got no problem with this. Mexicans don't want degenerate white hipsters moving into their hoods I say more power to the Mexicans. I don't want degenerate white hipsters moving into my neighborhood. Can't stand the sight of them.

Gentifiers get away with a lot because of the color-neutral term ‘gentrification’.
Maybe ‘white flight’ should have been called something else. Sanctuarizers. (Seeking sanctuary from black crime.)
And gentrification would get more flak if it were more race-specific in description.

Is this how they’re doing to treat those gallery owners:
They sure did a lousy job of playing for keeps in the SW territories.
Up against determination, Mexers are hopeless and useless.
But, paradoxically, that is one of the Mexers’ strength. Their sheer mediocrity seems so non-threatening that people ignore the rise in Mexer numbers for too long until there are too many of them and may even be poised to take over. Mexers know that their power resides ONLY IN NUMBERS.
You don’t need too many Muslims to realize that, uh oh, they mean trouble!! Even less with blacks.
But with Mexicans, you figure they will always be like Guillermo, a smiling servant people who say, “Yes Jimmy”.
Anyway, against determination and aggressive power, Mexers will always bow down and play the bitch.
I kind of love how the map portrays Bestia as the tip of the spear of an invading SWPL army, marching eastward, and powered by $29 plates of Cavatelli alla Norcina. http://bestiala.com/menu/

More importantly, do they really have anything on Trump with respect to Russia?:

A lot of the stuff at the link is dreck. But how is Russia is a threat? I don’t see Russia invading Poland, those days are over.
A similar conflict flared up in San Francisco’s Mission District about ten years ago, when the San Francisco Armory building located in the neighborhood was taken over for BDSM pornography filming by “Kink.com.” The Mission had once been a working-class, heavily Hispanic neighborhood. The local residents who were still of that description weren’t happy, but there weren’t enough of them left by then in the neighborhood to stop it. As of this year, Kink.com is leaving, but the Mission has gotten even more gentrified by the IT boom since then.
Maybe part of the lesson is lead with the residents, rather than the art galleries and other edgy/racy establishments. The sort of hoodlumism that would target, say, white hipsters moving in as residents directly is harder to get away with than the sort targeting an art gallery.
Come again, walking along in the Mission in the rain,"
I cannot speak for Boyle Heights. But middle class Mexican neighborhoods are pleasant. They cut their lawns. A very friendly people. They practice Catholic outbreeding.
Better than Somalis or Chechens.
A moral man seeks reciprocity.
I keep trying to figure out how this confrontation is the fault of straight white males but I’m not getting there.
Actually I’m pretty sure we discussed the prior incident last year, it just goes to show that the “Coalition of the Fringes” doesn’t really hold together very well once you start dealing with the details.
An urban (re-)developer friend told me that though Mexicans are less violent than blacks, that unlike blacks, once Mexicans move in, they are almost impossible to displace. If true, I wonder if the urban planners who thought they were so clever to displace blacks with Mexicans in NY and LA have thought their gameplan all the way through?
Steve,
You state that the Mexican gangs keep the blacks out.
An example of preemptive ethnic cleansing!
Pilsen in Chicago is becoming more white and less Mexican over time.
After the Mexicans drive the blacks out, you bring in the Armenians to rid yourself of the Mexicans. To get rid of the Armenians, you import the Chechens. Then you bring in the Chinese needle snakes.

The neighborhood still needs investment, growth and jobs. More than a little of the anti-gentrification sentiment is being pushed by an earlier generation white/hipster gentrifiers.
Mexicans are doing their version of lamenting what isn't that different than a lot of 'white flight'. As the area gets better, it gets more expensive. A nice urban neighborhood is going to be a more expensive place to raise a family at middle class standards.
The old urban development model broke down when blacks moved in, dug in, and ethnically cleansed the remaining European ethnics and made life hell for the working class/middle class blacks.
I recently ate in an semi-upscale Mexican restaurant owned by a Mexican who had been a chef at Rick Bayless/Frontera. The Mexican merchant seem fine with it. Or maybe there are the inevitable resentments, but thats the way cities are. Meanwhile, the Black neighborhoods have a feel of desolation more than menace.

The story of the Armory in SF is actually much more involved. The armory had been closed for years. During the first dot.com boom in the late 90s a builder bought it to renovate for offices. The now defunct SF Guardian led a campaign against the builder and delayed its opening long enough for the boom to end. In desperation and to great cheers from the left it was then rented out at a reduced rate to Kink.com. I guess now it will be turned back into offices.

I was born in Boyle Heights, White Memorial Hospital, on Brooklyn avenue in the early 1960’s.
I recall the demographics being roughly ~50% white, ~40% hispanic, and the rest Asians with a decent amount of Jews. I still remember the Breed St. synagogue right next to the Big Buy grocery store, also on Brooklyn avenue.
My question: so it’s ok for the current batch of hispanics to take over the neighborhood, but now they think gentrification is unacceptable? That’s chutzpah, right there, no?
Man, them Mexican aint here just to change diapers. They’s here to change da hoods.
But I hate the SJW types. Actually I'd rather have a Spanish speaking neighborhood than these gentrifiers. It is something now, good or bad, as opposed to what these types would turn it into.

Good tacos. Most Mexicans are just working class folk. And a lot of their women have GREAT curves & date white dudes.

Most of them like muscle cars, action movies, and other working class nerdy shit like comics and wrestling.

What’s the opposite of gentrification? — ungentrification — ‘white flight’ is usually the result of ungentrification — Whites are not allowed to protect their neighborhoods from ungentrification — in fact, other than condemning Whites for worrying about it, the media does not generally pay much attention to ungentrification — on the other hand, ‘activism’ against gentrification is usually reported approvingly — after all, the ungentrifiers have a right to preserve the character of their neighborhoods — not Whites though — the hypocrisy is noteworthy — in reality, today the entire country is being ungentrified — here also Whites are not allowed to preserve the character of their country (at least the media is quasi-consistent here) — so where will Whites go once the entire country is ungentrified?

Rec sports leagues (baseball, softball, bowling, basketball, etc.) used to ubiquitous among working class men when I was growing up (60’s – 70’s). I remember going to my Dad’s softball games during the summer and bowling league games in the winter as a tyke. This was suburban Chicago-Gary, which was still at that point a big industrial center with lots of blue collar/low white collar jobs for men (my Dad both sold life insurance and was a steelworker). I don’t know how widespread this was across the US, but I get the sense it was pretty common across the Midwest. I don’t see this extracurricular participation at the average Joe level as much anymore. It seems they live more vicariously through watching sports than actually going out and playing them. I also get the sense that the squeeze in wages at the median income level means average Joes spend more time working trying to make ends meet and don’t have enough free time to engage in off-work pursuits as they used to.
Oh, to be a movie studio executive for a week, just so I could commission Mr. Sailer to draft a script for an iStevey SoCal film noir spoof. Obviously, it would need to touch upon gentrification, immigration, World War T, golf course architecture, and the plunge for distance- a comedic “Chinatown” for the 21st century. Granted, all five people in America who would actually watch it are already reading this blog, but when did lack of an audience ever stop Hollywood from wasting money?
Certainly not.

Has the self-consciously-black-negro-versus-mestizo conflict ever really been given room to play out? I don’t think there are really any strident blacks in Mexico or Central America. There are blacks in Cuba and Puerto Rico but the Amerindians there got mostly wiped out long before the plantations really got going afaik.
Brazil has some blacks but a surprisingly small number that self identify that way and I don’t know but suspect they aren’t blackety-black in-yo-face-honky about it 24/7.
It could get interesting for U.S. blacks in areas where cracker justice loses its grip. Mexicans seem to have almost no use for them. There’s close to no cross-cultural affinity like there is with whites. No Mexican I’ve ever met listens to or likes rap, nor do they watch or give a sh** about the NBA, NFL etc. I’ve never seen a single black Mexican actor, ever. A Mexican encountering his first taste of the metro Africa must be something like if a band of Yupik Eskimos, decked in seal gut and wolf fur, went dogs howling down the streets of Sarasota slaughtering geriatrics with whale harpoons. The alien hate meter would get tipped pretty quickly.
And Mexicans have a long tradition of convoking vigilance committees.
Looks like they Pssst off, headed towards La Chingada.
Maybe the dynamic is different in California, but in Chicago, Mexicans get along fine with Poles and other Eastern Europeans. I spent a year in a mostly Mexican, partially Polish area and never encountered rudeness from Mexicans who came across as nice, not particularly educated, working class people.

As for student loans, there is no “need” to borrow a ton of money to attend college. See Zack Bissonnette’s book “Debt Free U.” Taking on substantial debt is an UNNECESSARY and unwise choice, and adults should generally not expect to force others to pay for the consequences of their foolish decisions. Blame the parents who didn’t teach their kids common sense and longer-term thinking, not the lenders or the government or anyone else.

It’s not like ‘luxury condos’ are being constructed at breakneck speed.
There is plenty of lebensraum in the city and inner suburbs.
The neighborhood still needs investment, growth and jobs. More than a little of the anti-gentrification sentiment is being pushed by an earlier generation white/hipster gentrifiers.
Mexicans are doing their version of lamenting what isn’t that different than a lot of ‘white flight’.
I thought this was the most interesting bit:
Actually, there were two interesting bits. The one I quote above and the fact that the story exits at all.

People – usually out of shape – who sit around eating Cheetohs and drinking beer whilst watching basketball, baseball, football, and, to a significantly lesser extent, hockey, are the vast majority of followers of professional sports.
Those of us who hold this behaviour in contempt are often too busy actually participating in athletic activities to spend hours every week watching others do so via a teevee. We are out hiking, kayaking, skiing, running, perhaps playing tennis, golf, or even basketball, baseball, or (among adults, usually touch) football, etc.
The idea that those of us contemptuous of professional sports and their mindless followers are all sitting around playing Dungeons & Dragons is no mere straw man; it’s a straw army.

Dunno about Flyover but this is how rent-control regs function in every big coastal city of the West or Northeast– a way to insulate Our People from the market & be aristocratically selective about which new initiates will be shown the favor. Very typical for the NYT running an out-of-town story such as this. Very (extremely) unusual for a hate crime investigation where the targeted victim is white.
Los Angeles is fashionable once again. A lot of people in New York are thinking about moving to L.A.
Bill Bratton got the crime rate down when he was top cop at the LAPD in 2002-2009. They stopped trying to arrest just the gang “kingpins” and started arresting all the gang members en masse.
The crime rate started going back up when they let all the prisoners out, and the number of homeless people is immense, but at the moment white people have a fair amount of confidence in LA. The mayor is no longer a cholo, but is instead a very well dressed white guy with some kind of complicated genealogical claim to being a Mexican that the Mexicans seem willing to accept.
For decades, gentrification energies in LA were focused on hilly neighborhoods as more defensible come the Day of the Locust, but they’re starting to notice that there are a ton of flat neighborhoods that are better for walking.

Even the sainted Matthew Shepard died due to his crystal meth dealing.
Shepard had enrolled at the University of Wyoming about six weeks before he was killed. He hadn’t lived in Wyoming for several years, and his family had lived in Casper, not Laramie. Stephen Jimenez has been promoting the ideal that Shepard and McKinney had an established association, which, again, is incredible given how little time Shepard had been in town, how little the social circles of one would ordinarily have intersected with the other, how little evidence Jimenez had that the two had been acquainted in Fort Collins, and how dubious was the testimony that they knew each other in Laramie.
