Boyle HeightsScreenshot 2017-03-16 15.32.52 is a Chicano neighborhood only a couple of miles east of booming downtown Los Angeles. It’s dumpy, but not hugely homicidal because the Mexican gangs keep the blacks out (the 2000 Census found Boyle Heights to be 94% Hispanic and only 0.9% black). So it has become a natural choice for gentrifying white people getting squeezed out of the Arts District in DTLA by rising rents.

From the New York Times:

California Today: A Gallery Flees and Neighborhood Activists Cheer
Mike McPhate
CALIFORNIA TODAY MARCH 15, 2017

Often referred to as the Ellis Island of Los Angeles, the neighborhood east of downtown known as Boyle Heights has been the first stop for several waves of immigration. Since the 1940s, it has transformed into a largely Mexican-American enclave and the center of Chicano culture and activism in the city.

The “Ellis Island” reference is a dog-whistle that Boyle Heights was heavily Jewish a century ago. But the Jews all white-flighted, and Boyle Heights has been not all that immigrant ever since Chicanos figured out many decades ago that low rents in an extremely convenient central location surrounded by several generations of your people were a pleasant combination. (Recent immigrants tend to be relatives from the Old Country of well-established residents.)

As other parts of Los Angeles have seen real estate prices climb steadily, many in Boyle Heights have expressed concern about gentrification, particularly after several art galleries moved into an industrial stretch. The battle between the galleries and activists reached a peak last fall when someone spray-painted a vulgar statement condemning “white art” on the door of one gallery and a hate-crime investigation was opened.

Almost from the moment it opened its doors last year Pssst, a nonprofit gallery, and its creators, have been the focus of protests and criticism on social media.

Last month, they announced they could no longer tolerate it. They were closing up shop.

“This persistent targeting, which was often highly personal in nature, was made all the more intolerable because the artists we engaged are queer, women, and/or people of color,” they said on their website. “We could no longer continue to put already vulnerable communities at further risk.”

Defend Boyle Heights, one of the activist groups that has called for a boycott of the galleries, said that it considered the closing a victory and that it hoped other galleries would soon follow suit.

I think for the SJW this experience might be called "post-wokeism." You do your darn best to show you sympathize with the vibrantly diverse and they hate you as much (or more) than the badwhites that openly don't give a sh!t about diversity or minorities and just mind their own business.

  2. TERRITORIALISM IS THE WAY OF THE WORLD

That includes financial territorialism. Young people should declare government debt to be not of their territory and refuse to pay it. Government debt is just stealing financial territory from the future. Declare odious debt and refuse to pay.

The Boyle area of Los Angeles and who controls it is small business. The bigger question is the financial territorialism of the globally coordinated central banks.

Is it "small business" that controls Boyle Heights or ignorant white-hating racist thugs and gangs?

As for student loans, there is no "need" to borrow a ton of money to attend college. See Zack Bissonnette's book "Debt Free U." Taking on substantial debt is an UNNECESSARY and unwise choice, and adults should generally not expect to force others to pay for the consequences of their foolish decisions. Blame the parents who didn't teach their kids common sense and longer-term thinking, not the lenders or the government or anyone else.

But, paradoxically, that is one of the Mexers' strength. Their sheer mediocrity seems so non-threatening that people ignore the rise in Mexer numbers for too long until there are too many of them and may even be poised to take over. Mexers know that their power resides ONLY IN NUMBERS.

You don't need too many Muslims to realize that, uh oh, they mean trouble!! Even less with blacks.

An urban (re-)developer friend told me that though Mexicans are less violent than blacks, that unlike blacks, once Mexicans move in, they are almost impossible to displace. If true, I wonder if the urban planners who thought they were so clever to displace blacks with Mexicans in NY and LA have thought their gameplan all the way through?

I used to hear “vulnerable” used to describe, e.g. poor children who don’t have anybody who will notice signs of abuse, or prostitutes, who might not be noticed if a serial killer starts picking them off.

Women in general, being half the adult population, seem like a stretch to include in that category. PoCs, too, by similar reasoning. “Queer” people are vulnerable insofar as the behavior that they’ve come to define themselves by is extremely risky (might be a bad idea to raw dog it on meth with >200 dudes a year, but God forbid you say that). Hard to see how that makes them a “vulnerable community”. Even the sainted Matthew Shepard died due to his crystal meth dealing.

I wonder, if you were alive in the reign of Charles V, and somehow had run afoul of the law in a capital matter, (e.g. laesae majestatis) would you have a grudging respect for being drawn and quartered?

The left has the (supposed) right using 'she' and 'her' for the generic pronoun. Are you a fan of their inconsistency? Or is it their arbitrary nature you admire? Maybe their Orwellian 1984 model of the future?

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.
It certainly excites respect from many. When our glorious Soviet (er, Venezuelan) future has been realized, will you grudgingly respect them for your time in the Gulag?

"Highly personal in nature" probably means aggressive following, sexual harassment, and murmured Mexican endearments that could mean, "I find out where you live," for all the harassee can tell.

To directly confront a man with tattoos on his face and his hand on his cojones would be punching up for the artists described, and vulnerable is a fairly exact word here.

Even the sainted Matthew Shepard died due to his crystal meth dealing.

Shepard had enrolled at the University of Wyoming about six weeks before he was killed. He hadn't lived in Wyoming for several years, and his family had lived in Casper, not Laramie. Aaron McKinney was a roofing company employee living in a trailer park with his baby mamma and child; Shepard was the son of a petroleum engineer who'd attended a boarding school when his father was transferred abroad. The notion that these two were more than tangentially acquainted beggars belief. (And, while we're at it, local law enforcement has said for attribution that Stephen Jimenez notion that Matthew Shepard was middle-management in a drug trafficking operation is a fantasy).

And dumbass, someone from the menacing mob spray-painted "F--- White Art" on one of the art galleries in question. Does that sound like a mere objection to "yuppie art" or flat-out racial hatred? If you can read English and are honest, you know the answer.

  13. On the other hand, here is the gallery’s nemesis: http://www.onda.la/2016/pssst-stinks

PSSST is but the most recent result of the world of art as it exists within racialized capitalism.

Of course it is. Here are their tips for disrupting your neighborhood gentrifying gallery:

    – Attend, drink all their wine and leave
    – As you leave perhaps think of opening up a stink bomb or two to clear the space
    – Bring noisemakers like fart bombs, horns and matracas to bring a festive mood to their dead spaces that will be sure to startle the attendees
    – Invite friends to mob the whole gallery and throw an impromptu party (see: the scene in La Haine)
    – Be creative! Have fun! Don’t get caught! Wear a mask if necessary!

    (My highlight)

    From their “About” page:

We know that […] the question of violence is not a question at all; that decolonization is not a metaphor but a threat backed by material violence; that the legal system offers nothing compared to revenge; that […] work is a drudgery imposed

    Fun guys.

The anti-gallery people did their homework.

... one of the two artistic directors of PSSST is a white artist who moved to L.A., received their MFA from CalArts, takes on the language of radical rhetoric despite also moonlighting as a real estate agent whose most recent properties for sale is in the actively gentrifying neighborhood of Frogtown. ...

... the building in which PSST is to be housed was purchased by a “silent investor” for $975,000 in 2014 and those involved with PSSST have signed a nondisclosure agreement to not say who is their wealthy investor. And yet we are expected to trust PSSST’s intentions. The intentions, we are told, is to focus on “underrepresented artists” but at what costs? When the cost of creating a venue for those you seek to focus is the displacement of those very people, or people like them then we begin to see who really stands to gain. The transformation of Boyle Heights into a place amenable to capital looking to develop it for an entirely different class of people comes into view. The “underrepresented artists” gain some kind of cultural capital but the developers and their associates gain actual capital.

  26. A similar conflict flared up in San Francisco’s Mission District about ten years ago, when the San Francisco Armory building located in the neighborhood was taken over for BDSM pornography filming by “Kink.com.” The Mission had once been a working-class, heavily Hispanic neighborhood. The local residents who were still of that description weren’t happy, but there weren’t enough of them left by then in the neighborhood to stop it. As of this year, Kink.com is leaving, but the Mission has gotten even more gentrified by the IT boom since then.

Maybe part of the lesson is lead with the residents, rather than the art galleries and other edgy/racy establishments. The sort of hoodlumism that would target, say, white hipsters moving in as residents directly is harder to get away with than the sort targeting an art gallery.

The now defunct SF Guardian led a campaign against the builder and delayed its opening long enough for the boom to end. In desperation and to great cheers from the left it was then rented out at a reduced rate to Kink.com. I guess now it will be turned back into offices.

We communicated our demands to the walking tour organizers several days in advance, to which they said they’d be visiting Aliso Village, an almost exclusively-industrial section of Boyle Heights, to talk about gentrification. We, again, messaged them to say this violated our simple demand of not stepping into Boyle Heights. Furthermore, we said we would be meeting them during the walking tour.

The bike tour was called off after threats of violence and death were made against real estate agents of Adaptive Realty. Since then, there was been little-to-no publicity of Adaptive Realty in Boyle Heights.

The whites moving into Pilsen don't earn much more than the current Hispanic residents, although many of the whites are students.

... Whites living in Pilsen also make more money than their Latino counterparts. As of 2013, the average white household living in Pilsen made $41,760, compared with the average Latino household, which made $32,126 annually.

... "They don't bother me, but we're separate," she said of her new white neighbors, many of whom are students.

... Soon, Alejo and others will lose their longtime Catholic parish. Citing the declining Latino population in the neighborhood, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced earlier this year that three churches in the neighborhood, including St. Adalbert, would close.

... Pilsen has undergone a slower gentrification than some other Chicago neighborhoods, like Wicker Park or West Town, that have seemingly gentrified in a decade,

... Despite its proximity to Downtown, Pilsen's housing stock — with sunken backyards and sunken first floors on some streets — and environmental issues have kept some buyers and investors at bay,

... And the ongoing efforts to fight gentrification and the Mexican community's overwhelming desire to stay have slowed the process by decades, he said.

"In my opinion, the big reason Pilsen is still Mexican is because the community is so resilient. Families will do whatever they can to stay, even if they have to pay more in rent. They will triple up in a house, rent rooms to other people. They have done a lot of things to stay," the UIC professor said.

On the other hand, here is the gallery's nemesis: http://www.onda.la/2016/pssst-stinks

PSSST is but the most recent result of the world of art as it exists within racialized capitalism.
Of course it is. Here are their tips for disrupting your neighborhood gentrifying gallery:

    - Attend, drink all their wine and leave
    - As you leave perhaps think of opening up a stink bomb or two to clear the space
    - Bring noisemakers like fart bombs, horns and matracas to bring a festive mood to their dead spaces that will be sure to startle the attendees
    - Invite friends to mob the whole gallery and throw an impromptu party (see: the scene in La Haine)
    - Be creative! Have fun! Don’t get caught! Wear a mask if necessary!
    (My highlight)

    From their "About" page:

We know that [...] the question of violence is not a question at all; that decolonization is not a metaphor but a threat backed by material violence; that the legal system offers nothing compared to revenge; that [...] work is a drudgery imposed
    Fun guys.

… the building in which PSST is to be housed was purchased by a “silent investor” for $975,000 in 2014 and those involved with PSSST have signed a nondisclosure agreement to not say who is their wealthy investor.

I remember going to my Dad's softball games during the summer and bowling league games in the winter as a tyke. This was suburban Chicago-Gary, which was still at that point a big industrial center with lots of blue collar/low white collar jobs for men (my Dad both sold life insurance and was a steelworker). I don't know how widespread this was across the US, but I get the sense it was pretty common across the Midwest. I don't see this extracurricular participation at the average Joe level as much anymore. It seems they live more vicariously through watching sports than actually going out and playing them. I also get the sense that the squeeze in wages at the median income level means average Joes spend more time working trying to make ends meet and don't have enough free time to engage in off-work pursuits as they used to.

It's not like 'luxury condos' are being constructed at breakneck speed.

Some residents moved to the suburbs to be closer to work and other longtime homeowners are happy to cash in on their investment as property values rise, he said.

There is plenty of lebensraum in the city and inner suburbs.

The neighborhood still needs investment, growth and jobs. More than a little of the anti-gentrification sentiment is being pushed by an earlier generation white/hipster gentrifiers.

Mexicans are doing their version of lamenting what isn't that different than a lot of 'white flight'. As the area gets better, it gets more expensive. A nice urban neighborhood is going to be a more expensive place to raise a family at middle class standards.

The old urban development model broke down when blacks moved in, dug in, and ethnically cleansed the remaining European ethnics and made life hell for the working class/middle class blacks.

I recently ate in an semi-upscale Mexican restaurant owned by a Mexican who had been a chef at Rick Bayless/Frontera. The Mexican merchant seem fine with it. Or maybe there are the inevitable resentments, but thats the way cities are. Meanwhile, the Black neighborhoods have a feel of desolation more than menace.

People – usually out of shape – who sit around eating Cheetohs and drinking beer whilst watching basketball, baseball, football, and, to a significantly lesser extent, hockey, are the vast majority of followers of professional sports.

Those of us who hold this behaviour in contempt are often too busy actually participating in athletic activities to spend hours every week watching others do so via a teevee. We are out hiking, kayaking, skiing, running, perhaps playing tennis, golf, or even basketball, baseball, or (among adults, usually touch) football, etc.

The idea that those of us contemptuous of professional sports and their mindless followers are all sitting around playing Dungeons & Dragons is no mere straw man; it's a straw army.

There was a big uproar in the LAT about a week ago about some White SJW runners taking selfies in South Central LA as the next thing to Klan lynching. The real fear, is that the SJW yuppies have their eyes on South Central as a desirable place for cheap real estate, just like Snap is pushing out the junkies, homeless, and street people from Venice as everyone knew would happen eventually.

    Hilarious. See link.

    Money quote:

Halliburton said he was jogging with a neighbor last year at Leimert Park Village when a black man said loud enough for them to hear, “Get out of my neighborhood.”

The missive was directed at Halliburton’s neighbor, who is white.

Halliburton stopped, flabbergasted, and said, “Excuse me. This is our neighborhood too.”

The man went silent, Halliburton said.

The neighborhood was not always a haven for blacks. Up until the 1950s, the area was occupied by white families.

But they fled as black residents moved in.

Tens of thousands of whites left Leimert Park, Baldwin Hills and other South Los Angeles neighborhoods. The first wave left in the years after the Supreme Court invalidated white-only real estate covenants in 1948. Then another, larger exodus happened after the 1965 Watts riots.

  66. @anonn
So are you now against local communities deciding what is appropriate for their neighborhoods? A similar conflict flared up in San Francisco's Mission District about ten years ago, when the San Francisco Armory building located in the neighborhood was taken over for BDSM pornography filming by "Kink.com." The Mission had once been a working-class, heavily Hispanic neighborhood. The local residents who were still of that description weren't happy, but there weren't enough of them left by then in the neighborhood to stop it.

    Replies: @Larry, San Francisco, @ganderson, @flyingtiger

The story of the Armory in SF is actually much more involved. The armory had been closed for years. During the first dot.com boom in the late 90s a builder bought it to renovate for offices. The now defunct SF Guardian led a campaign against the builder and delayed its opening long enough for the boom to end. In desperation and to great cheers from the left it was then rented out at a reduced rate to Kink.com. I guess now it will be turned back into offices.

There are blacks in Cuba and Puerto Rico but the Amerindians there got mostly wiped out long before the plantations really got going afaik.

Brazil has some blacks but a surprisingly small number that self identify that way and I don't know but suspect they aren't blackety-black in-yo-face-honky about it 24/7.

There's close to no cross-cultural affinity like there is with whites. No Mexican I've ever met listens to or likes rap, nor do they watch or give a sh** about the NBA, NFL etc. I've never seen a single black Mexican actor, ever. A Mexican encountering his first taste of the metro Africa must be something like if a band of Yupik Eskimos, decked in seal gut and wolf fur, went dogs howling down the streets of Sarasota slaughtering geriatrics with whale harpoons. I remember going to my Dad’s softball games during the summer and bowling league games in the winter as a tyke. This was suburban Chicago-Gary, which was still at that point a big industrial center with lots of blue collar/low white collar jobs for men (my Dad both sold life insurance and was a steelworker). I don’t know how widespread this was across the US, but I get the sense it was pretty common across the Midwest. I don’t see this extracurricular participation at the average Joe level as much anymore. It seems they live more vicariously through watching sports than actually going out and playing them. I also get the sense that the squeeze in wages at the median income level means average Joes spend more time working trying to make ends meet and don’t have enough free time to engage in off-work pursuits as they used to.

... the building in which PSST is to be housed was purchased by a “silent investor” for $975,000 in 2014 and those involved with PSSST have signed a nondisclosure agreement to not say who is their wealthy investor. Women in general, being half the adult population, seem like a stretch to include in that category. PoCs, too, by similar reasoning. "Queer" people are vulnerable insofar as the behavior that they've come to define themselves by is extremely risky (might be a bad idea to raw dog it on meth with >200 dudes a year, but God forbid you say that).

There is plenty of lebensraum in the city and inner suburbs.

The neighborhood still needs investment, growth and jobs. More than a little of the anti-gentrification sentiment is being pushed by an earlier generation white/hipster gentrifiers.

Mexicans are doing their version of lamenting what isn’t that different than a lot of ‘white flight’.

I notice this conflation is increasing. I reckon it is either because if the term “hoity toity” with its similar first syllable and two words, or just a perception that “hoi polloi” sounds exotic and therefore fancy to people….

Dunno about Flyover but this is how rent-control regs function in every big coastal city of the West or Northeast– a way to insulate Our People from the market & be aristocratically selective about which new initiates will be shown the favor. Not only the vibrants– white people are versed in the rent-control arts as well (cf. Santa Monica which is up the road from slightly-gangbangerish Venice)

With due respect to him as the host, Mr. Unz' wealth and location (if I recall correctly he lives in either Palo Alto or Menlo Park) suggest he has very little clue what it's like to actually live in hostile, overrun places like many of the rest of us do.

You might as well argue that actually having eaten beef is completely irrelevant to a man's capacity to accurately say how beef tastes.

I thought this was the most interesting bit:

The battle between the galleries and activists reached a peak last fall when someone spray-painted a vulgar statement condemning “white art” on the door of one gallery and a hate-crime investigation was opened.
Actually, there were two interesting bits. The one I quote above and the fact that the story exits at all.

Do we normally get a news story and the opening of a hate crime investigation and the news story reporting the opening of a hate crime investigation when some NAM expresses hatred for whites? Is that a thing? Does the NYT report on such incidents occurring 3000 miles away? Ever? Of course not.

Los Angeles is fashionable once again. A lot of people in New York are thinking about moving to L.A.

Bill Bratton got the crime rate down when he was top cop at the LAPD in 2002-2009. They stopped trying to arrest just the gang "kingpins" and started arresting all the gang members en masse.

The crime rate started going back up when they let all the prisoners out, and the number of homeless people is immense, but at the moment white people have a fair amount of confidence in LA. The mayor is no longer a cholo, but is instead a very well dressed white guy with some kind of complicated genealogical claim to being a Mexican that the Mexicans seem willing to accept.

For decades, gentrification energies in LA were focused on hilly neighborhoods as more defensible come the Day of the Locust, but they're starting to notice that there are a ton of flat neighborhoods that are better for walking.

Um, maybe because the murder, rape, burglary, intimidation, trash, graffiti, constant noise and fear that come with government housing projects or Section 8 buildings (typically full of African-"Americans") are far more of a grave threat than offensive or bizarre "art" ?

And dumbass, someone from the menacing mob spray-painted "F--- White Art" on one of the art galleries in question. Does that sound like a mere objection to "yuppie art" or flat-out racial hatred? If you can read English and are honest, you know the answer.

    Replies: @anonn

Ah, so local decision making is OK if it is made for reasons that you approve, and only negatively affects people that don’t look like you. Got it.

Putting a gallery of white yuppie art in the middle of the barrio is as much a deliberate cultural provocation as building a mosque near Ground Zero. As for “F— white art”, I hope you find a safe space to shield you from the naughty words.

the artists we engaged are queer, women, and/or people of color,” they said on their website. “We could no longer continue to put already vulnerable communities at further risk.”
I used to hear "vulnerable" used to describe, e.g. poor children who don't have anybody who will notice signs of abuse, or prostitutes, who might not be noticed if a serial killer starts picking them off.

Hard to see how that makes them a "vulnerable community". Even the sainted Matthew Shepard died due to his crystal meth dealing.

Shepard had enrolled at the University of Wyoming about six weeks before he was killed. He hadn’t lived in Wyoming for several years, and his family had lived in Casper, not Laramie. Aaron McKinney was a roofing company employee living in a trailer park with his baby mamma and child; Shepard was the son of a petroleum engineer who’d attended a boarding school when his father was transferred abroad. The notion that these two were more than tangentially acquainted beggars belief. (And, while we’re at it, local law enforcement has said for attribution that Stephen Jimenez notion that Matthew Shepard was middle-management in a drug trafficking operation is a fantasy).

I'm not understanding your point. It's been known since he was arrested that McKinney was a volatile character and that he and Russell Henderson were meth users. It's also been known that Shepard had a mess of issues, including heavy drinking.

Stephen Jimenez has been promoting the ideal that Shepard and McKinney had an established association, which, again, is incredible given how little time Shepard had been in town, how little the social circles of one would ordinarily have intersected with the other, how little evidence Jimenez had that the two had been acquainted in Fort Collins, and how dubious was the testimony that they knew each other in Laramie.

Here's a suggestion: Matthew Shepard was a broken down wreck of a young man, not a martyr and not an apprenticing drug lord. Maybe he'd have got his life sorted out, and maybe he wouldn't have; he was certainly off to an inauspicious start (as his father implicitly acknowledged 'ere his mother started off on her road show).

Maybe the dynamic is different in California, but in Chicago, Mexicans get along fine with Poles and other Eastern Europeans. I spent a year in a mostly Mexican, partially Polish area and never encountered rudeness from Mexicans who came across as nice, not particularly educated, working class people.

There are some tensions with Puerto Ricans - west Ukrainian fresh off the boaters who can't afford established Ukrainian Village itself, have driven PRs out of neighboring eastern Humboldt Park.
