pounds 7.6m bid for new network of buses.
MERSEYTRAVEL is bidding for pounds 7.6m to set up and run a 23-strong fleet of community buses. The cash is available under the government's Urban Bus Challenge and includes European funding.
Transport chiefs could clinch pounds 2m this year and pounds 5.6m more during the next two years.
The transport authority wants to plug the gap in existing bus services by establishing regular routes linking low-income areas with key employment sites.
Merseytravel chairman Cllr Mark Dowd said: "More than 70% of job seekers we questioned said public transport was vital in getting them back to work.
"This initiative will put the people back in control, giving them services when and where they want them."
