Paris cyclists raise cash for RBL care home

ALAN MALLET, Warwickshire's Royal British Legion county field officer and 150 other RBL officials from various parts of the country, have returned from a four-day cycle ride to Paris, raising funds for the senior ex-service charity.

Alan, who has already been sponsored for pounds 700 makes his contribution to the cost of the rebuilding of the Royal British Legion Care Home at Southam.

ON Sunday the Airborne and Parachute Association branches of Coventry hold a joint thanksgiving service at Holy Trinity Church, Broadgate at 11.15am. Standard bearers will be in attendance and should report to the standard marshall, Ivor Sherrard, by no later than 10.45am at the church.

All ex-service personnel and their relatives are invited to this special service.

CONDOLENCES are conveyed to the family of the late Les Latham of Bedworth. Les served in the Royal Marines, took part in the D-Day landings, served in Suez, Egypt and the desert campaign as a corporal.

The Central Band of the Royal British Legion will be in concert at the Royal Spa Centre, Leamington on September 29. Tickets are priced at pounds 9, pounds 10 and pounds 11.

COVENTRY branch RAFA and the RAFA Club have lost a long-serving official with the passing of Michael Smith.

Michael served as an air gunner in Lancaster Bombers during the war in Burma. He was, for many years, chairman of the local RAFA Club and also a life member of the Coventry branch.

A NAVAL reunion of former members who served in HMS Comus takes place at Portsmouth from September 21 to 23 . Details from Geoff Harper on 01302 708135.

THE Guards Brigade is holding its first meeting at The Royal Warwicks Club, Tower Street, Coventry on Tuesday, September 25, at 8.30pm.

A RECENT meeting of the Coventry and District Royal Marines Association confirmed the election of Gordon Caulfied as chairman of the branch. Gordon, who served with Royal Marine Commando Units for nine years, made an acceptance speech which warmly thanked his predecessor, Don Weston, for his service to the branch over recent years, this was supported by loud applause from the members. The RMA is keen to encourage former Royal Marines to join the branch. Fformer Bootnecks who are interested in joining can contact Gordon on Coventry 024 7668 3425.

THE Coventry combined Ex-services Association holds its meetings at the Royal Warwicks Club, Tower Street, Coventry on the first Tuesday of each month at 8pm. It hopes one representative of each Coventry ex-service associations will attend. For further information contact Captain Roy Holmes on 024 7668 6979.

TOM TRELFORD, of Cheveral Avenue, Radford, a veteran of the Royal Army Services Corps who served in Africa, Sicily and Italy has just celebrated his 90th birthday with a garden party for family, association members and their wives.
