The Shootist BBC2, 8pmAGEING gunfighter John Wayne arrives in a small Nevada town to face his approaching death from cancer. But his reputation ensures a rowdier welcome than he had thought. Wayne was not well when he made this last film of his long career in 1976. He was 68 and had lost a lung after an op. The film is a fitting tribute to a great actor.

UNDERCOVER cop Theresa Russell gets a little too involved in her false identity as a call girl. Her overbearing colleagues provide scant support as she crumples under pressure. This sleazy thriller is closer in spirit to melodrama than true grit, but Russell's excellent performance makes it a success. With Jeff Fahey and Eli Danker. Deftly directed by Sondra Locke.
Donnie Brasco Channel 4, 10pm
FBI agent Johnny Depp works undercover with New York Mafia wiseguys in 1978 after winning the trust of shabby hoodlum Al Pacino. Depp pays a heavy toll for his close-up view of criminals at work because his secret life with the hoods threatens his marriage - and his life. Mike Newell's heavyweight gangster drama is based on the memoirs of Joe Pistone.
Overboard BBC1, 10.15pm
SPOILED heiress Goldie Hawn loses her memory after falling off her luxury yacht. Rough-and-ready carpenter Kurt Russell claims her as his wife and packs her off to his beat-up shack to serve hand and foot on his unruly brood of brats. It's a perfect vehicle for Hawn's zany style. A screwball comedy that the whole family will enjoy.
A Business Affair BBC1, 12.05am
JONATHAN PRYCE is a novelist with writer's block in this romantic comedy. His problems are made worse when his wife (Carole Bouquet) is swept off her feet by his publisher (Christopher Walken). Look out for Sheila Hancock and Tom Wilkinson. Contains nudity violence and swearing.
