Pirate ran CD racket.

A MAN who sold pirate CDs and computer software on the internet cost manufacturers pounds 45,800, magistrates were told yesterday.

Paul Richardson, 32, of Maes y Mor, Belgrano, Abergele, was given 160 hours' community service and had to pay pounds 631 costs after admitting six offences of contravening the Trade Marks and Copyright acts.

Magistrates at Llandudno heard that Richardson set up the website "Richy's MP3 Madness." He told investigators he had operated for eight months and made an average of pounds 150 a week.

Stuart Dunn, prosecuting for Conwy council, said Richardson ran a "large and lucrative" business using a PO Box at Rhyl.

Gwyn Jones, defending, said although the potential loss came to tens of thousands of pounds, Richardson would have made no more than pounds 1,000.
