Man who stabbed guard is jailed.

A MAN who stabbed a security guard who was trying to apprehend a shoplifter has been jailed for three and a half years.

Sentencing Paul O'Neill, 40, yesterday, Recorder David Manley said: "Security officers deserve, and will receive, the protection of the courts."

Liverpool crown court heard that on June 20 this year a woman, who was with O'Neill, was seen in Safeways store in St Helens stealing a bottle of champagne.

When Robert Steven approached, the woman fled and a struggle developed with O'Neill. Mr Steven was stabbed in his shoulder and arm, said Philip Hall, prosecuting.

A pen knife with a two inch blade was found at the scene.

O'Neill, of Denford Road, Dovecot, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.
