MP's backing for pounds 20m Tesco superstore project.
BOOTLE MP Joe Benton is backing plans for a huge superstore that come under the spotlight at a planning inquiry today. The Labour MP says he has decided the investment and creation of hundreds of jobs is in the best interests of the community.
Tesco wants to build one of ten urban regeneration stores on a former leather factory site in Litherland.
It has already agreed to buy the Lanstar plot from tycoon Charles "Chucky" Smith for pounds 5m should consent be granted. At the 10-day hearing a government inspector will also learn about plans for another supermarket in Ash Road, Litherland, although an end user has yet to be named.
Mr Benton said: "I am firmly of the opinion the project will be good for Litherland and Bootle.
"It will provide jobs in an area of high unemployment and the proposals to recruit locally with a training scheme linked to Hugh Baird College are also worthy of merit."
The inquiry has been called in by the Department of Environment, Trade and the Regions (DETR) on the twin issues of the stores size and location although Sefton planners have already given the green light to the pounds 20m store on Hawthorn Road, Litherland.
It is thought there will be some opposition from small businesses in the community, who fear they may be adversely affected, are expected to oppose the plan at the inquiry in Litherland Town Hall.
