Kirk set for first woman at helm.

THE Kirk looks set to appoint a woman Moderator for the first time.

The Church of Scotland is in the process of selecting candidates and it's believed several women ministers are in the running for the post.

Kirk leaders are under pressure to choose a female for the role, and dispel the myth the establishment is institutionally sexist.

A church insider said: "It would seem appropriate given that the Queen will be opening the General Assembly, and while we have in the past had high hopes of selecting a woman for the post, this has not happened.

"There are lots of extremely capable women in the wings and it would seem like the right time."

A report due to be published by a working group within the Kirk will state that women are not progressing as much as they should be.
