Hero Mooney obeys last orders.

ALLOA..0 STENHOUSEMUIR..1

MARTIN MOONEY was ordered not to toast his success after scoring a priceless goal for Stenhousemuir.

The warning came not from his manager Brian Fairley but from the real boss in Mooney's life - his wife.

Stenny's striker said: "My wife is pregnant and she's told me not to drink until the baby is born.

"So even though I'm going on a wee break for a mate's wedding I know I've got to behave myself.

"I don't think the gaffer would be too pleased if I came back under the weather as we've got a difficult CIS Cup game at Clyde on Tuesday night."

Mooney's spectacular strike was about the only highlight of a match which had promised so much. Previously unbeaten Alloa had the better of a disappointing first half and twice come close to breaking the deadlock.

Ian Little jinked his way past Simon Vella after 31 minutes before firing over a deep cross which was volleyed past by Andy Seaton.

On the stroke of half-time, Jimmy Fisher watched in frustration as his header was superbly touched on to the right-hand post by the keeper.

Nine minutes into the second half, Gareth Evans got on the end of a Fisher cross but this time the crossbar denied Alloa.

Mooney broke the deadlock four minutes later with a sizzling strike from 18 yards and that was enough for Stenny as the sides cancelled each other out in the closing stages.

Stenny boss Fairley said: "It's been a good week, winning the Stirlingshire Cup and now coming here and taking all three points.

"It wasn't a great game but I'm not really bothered although I'm still tipping Alloa to win this league. We're going to have to maintain this level of performance if we want to challenge them."

Challenge Cup finalists Alloa were knocked off top spot by Clydebank but boss Terry Christie was still upbeat after the final whistle.

He said: "Up until their goal we were vastly superior but after they scored our heads appeared to go down. We had to lose some time and there's a long way to go."
