Gomes hints at Liverpool move.
Byline: CHRIS BASCOMBEPORTUGUESE striker Nuno Gomes claims he's received an approach from Liverpool.
Boss Gerard Houllier revealed yesterday he was tracking the 25-year-old Fiorentina star, but the Reds today insisted they haven't taken the interest further.
Crippling debts at the Italian club may force top players to leave, and Gomes is sure to have many managers interested in him.
Gomes said he knew of Liverpool's interest, although Manchester United are also in the hunt for his signature.
He said: "No-one has spoken to me directly but I know Liverpool have spoken to people close to me.
"Liverpool are a great club, I admire Gerard Houllier and it's a great honour to be linked with them."
Whether Houllier is prepared to bring another striker to Anfield will clearly depend on the form of those who are already there.
While Liverpool are confident Michael Owen will sign a new contract, Robbie Fowler is also less than two years away from being available on a Bosman and seems no closer to agreeing a deal. Houllier is determined his players must sign up or leave and his open admiration for a player such as Gomes could be seen as a warning to some of his current stars.
Sander Westerveld continues to bear the brunt of Houllier's ruthlessness.
Having been relegated to number four goalkeeper and told his future is away from Anfield, Westerveld now finds himself training with Liverpool's youth players during Melwood sessions.
