Golf: Bjorn Ryder boost for Torrance.

SAM TORRANCE has decided to pull out of next week's Lancome Trophy in readiness for Europe's Ryder Cup showdown.

Torrance ended his immediate playing commitments yesterday in Switzerland, finishing well down the field in the Omega European Masters won from start to finish by Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez.

Europe's captain now has just 19 days before he leads the quest to regain a trophy controversially lost two years ago at Brookline.

After his closing three-under 69 for 283, the Scot was told Thomas Bjorn's injured shoulder is not as bad as was first thought.

The Dane's manager, Guy Kinnings, said: "There is absolutely no problem with Thomas for the Ryder Cup.

"He's being smart and taking this week off so he doesn't have to worry about travelling to the States."

Luton's Ian Poulter was put on standby and Torrance indicated he will be in reach, if needed.

Winner Gonzalez (68-268) was showered with champagne after his 16-under par total and three-stroke win on the Crans-sur-Sierre course.

Helensburgh's Gary Orr recorded his best finish all season, finishing tied for third place at 11 under with American Craig Stalder.

Orr said: "I can't be unhappy with third. This week is the best I've swung it in a long time. If you had said on Thursday I'd finish third, I would have grabbed it."

Kirkcaldy's Gordon Brand Jnr also grabbed his best finish in 21 events this year, taking eighth with a 69 for 277.

LEADING TOTALS: 268 - R Gonzalez (Arg) 68. 271 - S Hansen (Den) 68. 273 - C Stadler (USA) 68, G Orr 69. 274 - F Jacobson (Swe) 70. 276 - G Owen 73, S Scahill (Nzl) 74.
