Fireman accused of stealing disaster money.
Byline: JAMES MULHOLLAND & MARION SCOTT EXCLUSIVEA FIREMAN has been accused of stealing money collected for the New York disaster fund.
Duncan Bain, 26, allegedly pocketed the cash after dressing up in his Strathclyde Fire Brigade uniform to collect money from sympathetic shoppers.
Bain, of Rutherglen, Glasgow, has been suspended from duty after appearing in court last week.
He denied charges alleging that he stole pounds 137 collected last weekend at a local Safeway store.
Bain is alleged to have told shoppers the cash was destined for the New York Fire Department Disaster Fund.
After pleading not guilty, at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday, Bain, who appeared from custody, was granted bail and will appear for trial in December.
The fireman, who moved from Glasgow's Gorbals fire station only months ago, is based at the city's Maryhill.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire Brigade said: "An officer did appear in court this week. He has now been suspended from duties."
The brigade is proud of its close links to the firefighters of New York where 403 emergency workers, most of them firemen, are missing presumed dead.
After the American tragedy, Strathclyde Fire Master Jeff Ord paid tribute to the NYFD.
He said: "Many of us have forged strong friendships and bonds with the firefighters and we feel their loss.
"We are offering compassionate and emotional support.
"We don't have any pretensions of offering technical help. They are the best for the job."
