Fatboy's tunes can fill empty churches.
CHURCH leaders are praying Fatboy Slim and Destiny's Child can help to fill empty pews. They have appointed ex-lawyer Fiona Walker as Scotland's first "creative worship adviser" to help bring in youngsters.
Fiona, who will spend a year at two churches in the north-east, including St Mary on the Rock in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, reckons pop and dance could be the key to filling the churches.
The dance and drama expert said yesterday: "I like Praise You by Fatboy Slim while Destiny's Child have some great gospel medleys.
"Such music speaks to young people and if we want more people to come, we have to appeal to them.
"The idea is not to turn worship into a rock concert, but we want to explore ways of making services more attractive to young people."
Fiona's husband John is rector of a church in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, and has already experimented with chart music to liven up services.
The results were so impressive that St Mary on the Rock clubbed together with St James's in nearby Cruden Bay to recruit Fiona.
Her appointment was praised by the Very Rev Gerald Stranraer-Mull, Rector for both churches.
He said: "There is nothing wrong with the old ways but the opportunity to have somebody as multi-talented as Fiona is a godsend."
