BARTHEZ twice went walk-about only to be dispossessed by Blackburn's Corrado Grabbi. Fortunately for the keeper, the Italian striker saw one effort disallowed for a foul and put the other wide. Ferguson said his keeper "won't do that again".

Barthez cost United the game with two dreadful blunders either side of the break. First he got in a muddle with defender Wes Brown and allowed Sergio an easy equaliser. Then after the break he raced out of goal and slipped on the ball, leaving the way open for Diego Tristan to snatch winner.

Barthez almost gifted Leicester the lead when he kicked the ball straight to Ade Akinbiyi, but the goal-shy forward shot wide.

Barthez again responsible for two goals. Under no pressure, he kicks the ball straight to Thierry Henry, who rolled the ball in. Minutes later he failed to collect ball cleanly and Henry netted.
