Today is Family Day in Canada. Well, New Brunswick, Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia are celebrating Family Day and Manitoba is celebrating Louis Riel Day. Nova Scotia of course has Nova Scotia Heritage Day and Islander Day is happening in Prince Edward Island.
Anyone who works in Newfoundland & Labrador have no holiday and will be heading into work 😩 UNLESS they live in the specific city of Corner Brook in which case - yes - it is a random, unnamed civic holiday and they have the day off 😁!
People in Quebec, or the Territories are simply at work scowling at their computers.
I’m sure there’s a reason that Canada can’t just have a nation-wide federal Family or Provincial Heritage holiday across the country on one specific day and I’m also sure that reason is stupid.
Regardless, for several provinces it is Family Day or another type of civic holiday which means a day off to spend with family however you see fit.
If you’re part of my family who sees and talks to each other all the time, family day might just mean a day where you ignore your family. The one day a year when you remove yourself from them all to eat Fritos and drink Diet Coke under a tent made out of blankets in your living room.
And binge watch television.
If you’re not into that sort of thing because the last time you binge watched television you woke up 3 weeks later in a rehab clinic with withdrawal shakes next to a guy wearing just the upper half of a Star Trek costume, then I have some other options for you.
Family Day Activities
- My #1 idea for spending time with family - walk your dogs.
Please enjoy.
- Sledding
- Skating
- Hiking
- Baking cookies together
- Baking a pig’s head together
- Board games
- Make up a family theme song using only swear words and sing it with a Scottish accent to your neighbours. While holding a pickle
- Go see a movie.
- Give each other vague compliments and then make fun of whoever says thank you
- Have a big family dinner with all your extended family that lives close enough
- Make loving cards for each other
- Tell each of your children when they turn 13 they’re going to have to start getting home perms
- Order a pizza and have movie day at home
- Make a big bowl of popcorn with a whole pound of melted butter and go through old family photo albums
- Knit
- Make good old fashioned macaroni necklaces
- Bowling!
- Spend the day reading
- Declare yourselves pirates
- Go to a restaurant and pretend it’s someone’s birthday. Free cake.
- Make a big pot of chili and bring it to someone who doesn’t have family.
Here's to spending the day with family. Eat, love, be merry & mock each other.

Family Day just ain’t on my radar. It became a new made up holiday after I was no longer gainfully employed so a long weekend is just like any other. Besides, I’ve got a super crappy cold and laying in bed coughing my lungs out. It’s not pretty. Hope everyone else out there’s having fun!

Everyone in Quebec can come to the US and celebrate President’s Day. You could add buy a car or furniture to your list as that is what we do on President’s day. Unfortunately even though a federal holiday we don’t get the day off hence why I’m reading the blog while listening to a conference call!

I absolutely LOVED and desperately needed a chuckle today, thank you ! I live in Downeast Maine and it would appear Nova Scotia has received all of our allotment of snow . I expected to have tons of it by now to shovel about but rather sadly have only a dusting. I loved the swearing with a Scots accent whilst brandishing a pickle ! I will give it a whirl during pirates day in Easport! Our George Washington was thrilled about the mattress comment and is now insisting we purchase him one immediately!
Thank you Karen for delivering much need sanity and brevity into our lives.

You're welcome! It's my job. :) ~ karen!

I believe we declared ourselves pirates many years ago. Lol
The dogs are cute. The one pic however looks like it may be a two headed critter. 😁

For those of us South of the Maple Moose curtain, today (Monday) is Presidents Day nationwide. A festive holiday apparently engineered to celebrate the sale of furniture and mattresses..... I could be mistaken. And when it comes to family, we may not have it all together, but together we have it all.

I couldn't have set it better...especially the part about the importance of having family. Mine is not super nearby, but we get together as often as it works out for everyone. Those are the days that I feel that I have it all.

It was actually engineered to give federal employees yet another paid day off.
