Alison Moyet (born June 18, 1961) is British new wave and synth-pop inflected singer-songwriter and musician hailing from Billericay, Essex, England.
Having trained to be a piano tuner after leaving school age 16, Moyet played in a number of punk, rock and blues bands across Essex including the Vandals, the Screaminâ Ab Dabs, and the Little Roosters. It wasnât however until the singer turned 21 that she earned her mainstream breakthrough as a part of the synthpop duo Yazoo. Formed alongside former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke in 1982, Yazoo released the albums âUpstairs at Ericâsâ and âYou and Me Bothâ, which spawned the hit singles âOnly Youâ, âDoât Goâ, and âSituationâ. After Yazoo disbanded, Moyet signed with CBS in 1983, marking the start of the singer-songwriterâs solo career.
Released in 1984, Moyetâs debut album âAlfâ, was produced by the respected producing and songwriting duo Jolley & Swain. The album became a major hit in Britain, topping the UK Albums Chart and spawning the hit singles âInvisibleâ, âAll Cried Outâ, and âLove Resurrectionâ. Propelling Moyet to British stardom, the singer subsequently performed at Live Aid in 1985, toured alongside John Altmanâs jazz band, and released the hit single âIs This Love?â in 1986.
Moyetâs second album âRaindancingâ arrived in 1987, peaking at No. Two on the UK Albums Chart and No. 94 in the U.S. Featuring the singles âWeak in the Presence of Beautyâ, âOrdinary Girlâ, and âSleep Like Breathingâ, âRaindancingâ was succeeded by âHoodooâ in 1991. Reluctant to submit to overly pop sensibilities, despite the potential commercial success of doing so, âHoodooâ represented Moyet's fight for artistic control. With contributions from Kirsty MacColl, Steve Lillywhite and Marius De Vries, the albumâs lead single âIt Wonât Be Longâ earned a Grammy nomination for Best Song.
After the release of her subsequent album âEssexâ in 1994, and the greatest hits compilation âSinglesâ in 1995, Moyet, due to contractual disagreements with Sony, didnât release any new material for eight years. During this time Moyet collaborated with the likes of Tricky, Ocean Colour Scene and The Lightning Seeds, and released a pair of compilation albums in 2001 and 2002. Following her Sony contract release in August 2002, Moyet signed with Sanctuary Records and released her fifth studio album âHometimeâ. Produced by The Insects, the album drew Brit Award and Mercury Prize nominations, and peaked at No. 18 on the UK Album Chart.
The cover album âVoicesâ followed in 2004, and, led by the single âOne More Timeâ, the album âThe Turnâ was released in October 2007. After a move to the label Cooking Vinyl in 2013, Moyet released her eighth studio album âThe Minutesâ, accompanied by the singles âWhen I Was Your Girlâ and âLove Reigns Supremeâ.
Read moreSometimes, a dramatic change of landscape is whatâs required for a musician to genuinely come out of their shell, to reveal a side of themselves to the world that previously hadnât been on display; thatâs precisely what happened to Alison Moyet after the dissolution of her short-lived synthpop act Yazoo in the early eighties. As a part of that band, Moyet had mainly become known for catchy pop tracks with a classic eighties electronic sound to the instrumentation, but the songs had never really shown off her voice in earnest, and it wasnât until she began to release music under her own name that her stunning vocal range really came to the fore, as she began to concern herself with sounds that were far more bluesy in nature, as well as some traditional pop balladry. Sheâs no arguably better known for those songs than her Yazoo work, and continues to retain a big enough cult fanbase to tour Europe regularly; she joined Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra on the road around the UK back in 2010, returning to her more soulful solo output just a couple of years after completing a successful reunion tour with Yazoo around Europe.
Great concert in 't Paard in The Hague, The Netherlands. Alison kicked of with one of the strongest songs from her latest album Other, I Germinate, followed by a Yazoo classic, Nobody's Diary. More Yazoo classics followed during the concert (Only You, Situation and closing song Don't Go). Highlights during the concert were Wishing You Were Here, This House and The Rarest Birds. All by all a great concert by one of the best voices around. Alison Moyet will surely stay for many years to come!
Alison was great! Really amazing this woman and her incredible voice. I liked the new song texts, but not the kind of noisy music accompanying them. Brutally loud and far away from melodious songs such as Invisible. Only you abd Love resurrection were hghly appreciated by the crowd. Alison Moyet is a great star but the âback to electronicsâ style of music she us süorting on her new album is not my type of music.
The lady can sing. Great , fun, upbeat show. Everything you'd want to hear and a few newbies for me that I really liked. The crowd was bopping and singing all evening . Not a dull moment. My highlight - Love Resurrection . But who doesn't love Only Ypu. Go Ali! Will be looking out for next show.
Great performance from a great artist at a great venue.
Not every contemporary artist can pull off the Bridgewater Hall but Alison Moyet did so brilliantly.
Very human, engaging with an incredible voice.
The room, the acoustics, the music but first of all the Chanteuse! Alison Moyet was magic! Her voice, if that's possible, was better than ever. I'm obsessed. Thanks for lighting up Portland's Star Theater!
Saw Alison Moyer at the Sage Gateshead. She was AMAZING, just like she was in the 80's. Was not disappointed. Still got that distinctive voice. Went there with a friend for my 50th Birthday
Saw her at York Barbican probably one of the best live acts I seen along with Pink ,. Hope she comes back soon still love listening to her music, but live is best. P miller
Absolutely a great night she still has the voice and it reminded me of the eighties when she was with Yazoo. I would definitely recommend that she is worth going to see.
