SEXUAL
LESSON
10
BEHAVIORS
Learning Outcomes:
1. discuss the variety of sexual behaviors in
humans;
2. tackle typical sexual variations; and
3. show appreciation of the diversity of
human sexual expression.
Definition of Terms:
• Sexual Behavior – an action with sexual
intention and context.
• Erotic – related to sexual stimulation; has
something to do with the erogenous zones.
• Sexual response cycle – sequence of
events from arousal to orgasm to resolution
of sexual tension
Definition of Terms:
• Sexual dysfunction – a concern or
problem in any phase of the sexual
response cycle.
• Copulatory behavior – related to the
insertion of the penis into the vagina.
• Paraphilia – arousal from non-living
objects and or non-consenting persons.
Introduction
• What is behavior? It refers to an action.
• People act based on motivation or
response to stimuli.
• Behavior can be measured through
frequency (how many), duration (how
long), intensity (magnitude), and
diversity (varieties of behavior).
SEXUAL BEHAVIORS
SEXUAL BEHAVIORS
• Sexual behaviors are actions that
humans agree to interpret as an
expression of their sexual motivation or
intentions.
• Erotic behaviors involved any of the
primary and secondary erotic zones.
Aim of the Behavior
Auto-erotic (Self-directed)
- Sexual behavior such as masturbation
Homoerotic
- Sexual behavior oriented to the same
sex
Heteroerotic
- Sexual behavior oriented to the opposite
sex
SEXUAL BEHAVIORS
For reproductive purposes, copulation or the
insertion of the penis into the vagina is
necessary.
Two Common Positions
• Ventral-Ventral Position – male and female
are facing each other.
• Ventral-Dorsal Position – The abdomen of
the male species is facing the dorsum (back)
of the female species.
SEXUAL BEHAVIORS
Non-copulatory sexual behaviors include
hugging, kissing, and caressing.
Sexual behaviors that involve oral stimulation:
• Fellatio – oral stimulation of the penis
• Cunnilingus – oral stimulation of the vagina
Sexual behaviors that involve stimulation or
penetration of the anal orifice (anal sex).
SEXUAL RESPONSE
CYCLE
SEXUAL RESPONSE
CYCLE
Master and Johnson proposed the four
phases of the Sexual Response Cycle:
- Excitement (Erection or tumescence)
- Plateau (peak of stimulation in the
organ)
- Orgasm (Climax)
- Resolution (return to normal)

SEXUAL RESPONSE CYCLE
Contrary to Master and Johnson, Kaplan
also proposed three phases of the
Sexual Response Cycle:
- Desire (Sexual thoughts and feelings)
- Arousal (Outcome of sexual
stimulation)
- Orgasm (Completion of sexual
response)
SEXUAL RESPONSE
DYSFUNCTIONS
Common Sexual Response
Dysfunction
• Sexual desire disorder – low levels of
desire or an aversion to sexual activities.
• Sexual arousal disorder – problems in
achieving the necessary physiological state
for copulation.
• Orgasmic disorder – problems in achieving
orgasm.
• Sexual pain disorders – experience of pain
during the sexual response cycle.
PARAPHILIAS
PARAPHILIAS
Paraphilia is when an individual gets sexually
aroused by an object, a person, or a
circumstance that are unusual.
Paraphilic disorder is when the urge to act
last for at least six months and is
manifestation of clinically significant distress.
Some common paraphilic
disorder are as follows:
• Exhibitionism – pleasure from
exposing one’s genitals to
nonconsenting people;
• Fetishism – arousal from non-living
objects
• Frotteurism – touching or rubbing
one’s body or genitals to nonconsenting
people;
Some common paraphilic
disorder are as follows:
• Sexual sadism – arousal from actually
suffering or humiliation;
• Transvestic fetishism – (for
Heterosexual male only) arousal from
wearing clothing by the opposite sex
during sexual activities;
• Voyeurism – observing other people
engaged in sexual activities.
