immediately to the Supervisor or Line manager.
WORKING AT HEIGHT
HEIGHT HAZARDS AT WORKSITES
Scaffolding must be inspected, and should have Scaffold-tag. Never use
incomplete scaffolding
Safety harness must be used always wherever required and while
working at height near unprotected edges
Holes and opening on floors should be protected with clearly marked and
fixed covers to prevent falls
Follow the safety signage and safety instructions posted at the work
place and follow the safety instructions given by the Supervisor or line
Manager
LADDER SAFETY
IMPROPER USE OF LADDERS KILL A LOT OF PEOPLE !!
• Check the ladder before use and ensure it is free of damage. Do not use
damaged ladder
• Make sure it is long enough or high enough for the task. Do not over
reach
• Select a ladder that will extend at least 1 meter above the access area
• Place the ladder on a firm base and follow the 1 in 4 rule (i.e. 1 unit out
for every 4 units up) – see Figure on right
• Secure (nail or lash) the ladder to avoid movement of ladder while
working
• Always have a firm grip on the ladder and keep a good balance. Always
maintain 3 point contact with the ladder
EXCAVATION WORK
PREVENTING ACCIDENTS IN EXCAVATIONS !!
• Exercise caution while working near excavation to prevent fall into excavations
• Use the required PPE and fall arrest system while working near the edge of excavations
• Wherever applicable a permit to work must be obtained before commencing work near
excavations
• Do not work under raised loads
• Watch out for vehicles or machinery moving around the excavation
• Stand away from vehicles that is being loaded or unloaded
• Do not keep tools, equipment or materials near the edge of excavations
EQUIPMENT SAFETY-MACHINERY
• Only licensed and competent drivers should operate the Forklift
• Access marked for Forklift movement must not be blocked
• Safe Work Load limit must be displayed on the fork lift and followed by
operators
• Forklift must be operated only on a firm / solid and even surface
• The load must be properly fixed and secured
• Ensure reversing area is free of pedestrians and structures
• Never carry people on forklift
WORKPLACE TRANSPORT SAFETY
• The main risks associated with vehicle movement are people falling off vehicles, or being
struck or crushed by them
• Separate entrances, exits, and routes are assigned for vehicles and pedestrians. Do no walk in
the path assigned for vehicle movement
• Be alert and watch out for vehicles while walking around sharp corners and blind bends
• Traffic routes should be free from obstructions and kept clean
• Ensure adequate clearance around slewing vehicles
• Vehicle loading area must be barricaded to avoid unauthorized entry of staff
• Avoid reversing where possible and use one-way system
• Vehicles should have reversing alarms
• Passengers must be carried only on vehicles designed to carry them
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Wastes generated from operations must be segregated
and disposed as per local regulations (Hazardous and
General Waste)
Extra care must be taken in filling diesel to vehicles and
equipment to avoid spillage
Littering must be avoided, and wastes must be disposed
only in the designated bins
Drip Trays provided must be used where required to avoid
spillages
Preventive measures should be taken to avoid the
leaking, colliding, dragging and dumping of the
hazardous materials during transporting, loading and
unloading
Reduce, re-use, recycle – caring for environment is in
everyone’s interest (e.g. switch off lights, do not print,
turn off engine etc.)
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
ELECTRICK SHOCK & ELECTRIC FIRE ARE THE MAIN HAZARDS !!
Exercise caution while working with electrical equipment to
prevent electrical shock
Never repair electrical tools and equipment if you are not
competent to do that
Perform pre use check of electrical tools to ensure it is free of
damages. Check the equipment including cables for any
damage. In case you find any equipment damaged, report to
your supervisor and do not use any damaged equipment
Keep trailing cables off the ground and away from water
Never overload electrical sockets or make octopus connections.
Do not use metal ladders for or near electrical work
Ensure sufficient access and working space around all electrical
equipment
Ensure adequate illumination for all working spaces around
electric equipment
HANDLING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
Hazardous substance include materials which are corrosive,
flammable, explosive, poisonous and contain oxidizers
Refer MSDS of the material before using. Understand the safety
measures to be followed while handing and using the material. Ask
your supervisor for clarification if you need to
Dusty or fume-laden air can cause lung diseases. Use the
appropriate PPE while handling hazardous substance. Make sure
that PPE is regularly checked and replaced if necessary
Make full use of any local exhaust ventilation provided to remove
vapours from work area
Prevent unnecessary evaporation of solvents by using the
minimum amount for the job, keeping lids on containers and using
sealed containers for solvent-contaminated waste
Do not leave solvent contaminated rags lying around. Dispose
them in closed containers
