SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL

INDUCTION TRAINING
The simple notes in this Safety induction training are to prevent you and your fellow workers from
possibly sustaining injuries at Construction site.

With your support we can ensure zero harm within our work places.

All General Safety Rules must be adhere to at all times.

Your Site Supervisor/Safety Officer and/or Representative on site will tell you about any specific
safety rules.

If you have any problems with any of these rules, standards or arrangements, please consult your
Site Supervisor / Site Safety Officer / Site SHE-Representative.

SAFETY

Persons working on any construction sites is responsible for his/her own safety as well as
the effects that the task/job assigned to him/her will have to his/her co-workers.

Obey all safety notices and signage in Site offices and on any construction site that you will be
working at.

If you notice that anyone is doing something unsafe that could cause him/her to sustain an injury
or possibly cause an accident or incident, STOP that specific task/job and warn the person of the
dangers.
Please do this in a dissent and orderly way. Seeing as some employees does get upset if you
speak to them in a nasty way.
If he persists, report it to your Site Supervisor / Safety Officer / SHE-Representative (s).

Anyone who does not obey the safety rules, instructions and/or any
mandatory/information/warning signs is liable to disciplinary actions by the
SITE SUPERVISOR and/or MANAGEMENT.

The Site Safety Officer/ SHE-Representative will give you the required verbal warning when
it is required.
A re-occurrence might result in Disciplinary action, which could lead to a dismissal.
If in doubt ask you supervisor for advice.

TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY – IT MAY BE YOUR OWN LIFE THAT YOU SAFE!!!

1.
HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STATEMENT

SAFETY RULES ON SITE:

DO NOT WEAR

 Torn or loose clothing close to moving machinery or moving parts.


 Jewellery that might get stuck to a machine, or any moving part of a
machine.
 Long hair that is not tied down with a hair net under your safety hard hat.
 Any PPE that is damaged.

ALWAYS WEAR

 All PPE required by the client or as specified on site.


 Suitable Protective Clothing & equipment for the task in hand.
 Approved Safety Boots with steel toe caps.
 SABS approved hard hats on all construction areas.
 SABS approved safety harness when working at heights.

ALSO WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION

 When grinding. (Double eye protection-Safety glasses & face shield)


 When welding. (The required welding helmet)
 When Drilling. (Safety glasses)
 Where notices say eye protection must be worn.
 In any other area where your eyes could be injured.

USE GLOVES, APRONS, SPATS OR SPECIFIED SPECIAL


CLOTHING WHEN HANDLING

 Rough materials.
 Chemicals and/or Hazardous substances.
 Hot or cold objects.

 Steel objects.
 Grinding / welding activities.
 Portable electrical equipment.

WEAR EAR PROTECTION WHENEVER IT IS REQUIRED AND/OR

NOTICES SAY YOU ARE IN AN NOISE ZONE.

 With grinding & cutting activities.


 In any noise zone.
 Jack-hammer operations.
 Machinery operations.
 Saw and drilling activities. (when the noise is more than 85 Db)

WEAR RESPIRATORS OR DUST MASKS WHEN

 The area is very dusty.


 There are any other toxic dangers that could be inhaled.
 The symbolic safety signs tell you to wear a respirator or dust mask.

USE SPECIAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT WHEN REQUIRED TO WEAR IT.

Immediately report any loss and/or damage to protective clothing or any safety equipment.

FOLLOW THE REQUIRED PROCEDURES.

KEEP YOUR WORK AREA CLEAN BY

 Regularly sweeping up shavings, dust, scraps or cleaning up oil spills and


dispose of it in the correct manner.
 Putting refuse in the designated bins provided.
 Use the correct waste bin for the type of waste being exposed of.

KEEP ACCESS WAYS SAFE BY

 Not blocking fire protection devises, fire exits or traffic lanes with tools or equipment.

 Keeping loose material off stairs and walkways.

GET TO KNOW YOUR WORKING AREA, IN PARTICULAR

 Warning signs.
 Location of fire extinguishers and fire hoses.
 Locations of emergence telephones and numbers.
 Emergency Exists and emergency assembly points.

BE AWARE OF OTHER WORK NEAR YOU OR IN SURROUNDING AREAS, IN PARTICULAR

 Do not walk under suspended loads or persons working above you.

 Watch out when mobile cranes are in operation and when construction vehicles are moving
around on site.
 Use the designated roads, walkways or walking routes.
 Do not take shortcuts.

WHEN MANUALLY CARRYING SOMETHING MAKE SURE THAT

 You bend your knees, keep your back straight and push up with your legs.

 Get help or assistants with heavy or bulky materials.


 There is only one person giving orders when a team is lifting big and heavy loads.
 There must be a clear path to where you want to go before starting to lift.

WHEN USING A LADDER

 Use both hands when climbing.


 Use a shoulder bag or material hoist to lift hand tools or loads.
 Make sure the ladder is sturdy and the correct length.

WHEN USING HAND OR POWER TOOLS, MAKE SURE THAT:

 You are using the right tool for the task in hand.
 Handles are not split or damaged.
 Cutting tools are sharp and protected when not in use.
 Power tools are not being overloaded.
 Electrical wiring is not exposed.
 That there are not cuts or joints in cables or electrical cords.

ONLY QUALIFIED PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO REPAIR TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT.

BEFORE STARTING MACHINERY: FAULTY ELECTRICAL WIRES


IS DANGEROUS!!!
 Make sure all guards are in place. MUST BE REPAIRED BEFORE
 Check safety of other people. THE EQUIPMENT IS USED!!
 Conduct pre-checks
 Ensure that you have the necessary training & experience before operating machinery

BEFORE REPAIRING, ADJUSTING OR CONNECTING ANY MACHINERY- STOP AND


ISOLATE THE SPECIFIC MACHINE. ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE LOCK-OUT THE SPECIFIC
MACHINE. TEST FOR ANY ENERGY SOURCE BEFORE CARRYING ON WITH THE
TASK/JOB.
DO NOT WORK ON A MACHINE WHILE IT IS IN OPERATION OR IN MOTION.
LOCK-OUT = ONE PERSON, ONE LOCK.

REGULARLY CHECK ALL LIFTING TACKLE/GEAR. IF FAULTY, GET IT REPAIRED OR


DISCARD DAMAGED EQUIPMENT –
DO NOT USE FAULTY EQUIPMENT!!!

DO NOT USE AN AIR HOSE TO CLEAN YOUR CLOTHING AND DO NOT


POINT IT AT ANY OTHER PERSON.

5.
Obey “NO SMOKING” signs.
Know where the nearest FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are and how to
operate them.

STORE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS ONLY IN SMALL AMOUNTS AND IN APPROVED SAFETY


CANS/CONTAINERS/CAGES.

YOU MUST NOT OPERATE ANY EQUIPMENT OR VEHICLES UNLESS YOU ARE TRAINED,
QUALIFIED, AUTHORIZED OR LICENSED TO DO SO.

WHEN USING OILY RAGS:

 Store them after use in covered metal bins or dispose of them safely.
 Keep oily rags away from oxygen cylinders or open flames.
 Use only clean rags when possible.

KEEP PORTABLE HEATING EQUIPMENT AND ENGINES INSIDE BUILDINGS AWAY FROM
COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS .

DO NOT WORK ON ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT UNTIL A QUALIFIED COMPETENT PERSON


HAS DECLARED IT SAFE.

DO NOT USE ELECTRICAL POWER TOOLS OR EQUIPMENT WHILE STANDING IN WATER.
MAKE SURE THE CORDS OF ELECTRICAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT ARE IN GOOD
CONDITION.

All tools, equipment & machinery must be inspected and declared safe to use by a
competent person before it can be used on site

REPORTING OF INJURIES OR INCIDENTS

 In case of an incident or injury, report the incident or injury immediately or before the end of
that specific shift to your Supervisor or Safety Officer / Representative.
 In a First aid case, get the required treatment from your trained First-Aider.
 In Serious injury cases, the Supervisor or sub-ordinate must accompany the
Injured person to the nearest hospital/medical clinic together with the required
Documentation. (W. C. l. forms)
 All injuries and incidents must be investigated by the Safety Officer / SHE-Rep
and the Supervisor must be involved.
 Employees that book off sick due to an injury or illness shall produce a valid doctor’s certificate
for the period being booked off. If no doctor certificate, he/she shall not be paid for the period
being booked off sick.
 All injuries to be reported to the company’s Safety Manager.
The injury reports and investigation reports need to be forwarded to the Safety Manager’s
office.

WHEN WELDING OR GAS CUTTING

 Remove nearby combustibles and use required shields.


 Make sure that fire extinguishers are available.
 Check gas cutting hoses and fittings for leaks.
 No cuts or joints on welding cables.
 Welding rod holders and earth clamps to be in good safe condition.
 Do not tamper with safety equipment.
 Put a welding screen in place to protect other employees against
welding flash and/or sparks.

SCAFFOLDING

 Scaffolding shall only be erected by trained erectors and supervised by a competent


supervisor that is appointed in writing.
 Scaffolding to be inspected and certified safe to use by a competent scaffolding inspector.
SAFE TO USE sign to be displayed.
 No person/s to tamper with and/or remove any part of the scaffolding.

 Scaffolding to be erected as per SANS standards.
 Hand over certificate between erector and user to be completed before work commence on
scaffolding.

WORKING AT HEIGHTS

 Any person that will be doing work or inspections at heights above 2m from ground level or
any landing, closer than 2m from any edge, opening, excavation or embankment where the
potential is to fall further than 2m, shall at all times use a double lanyard safety harness and
be attached at all times to a secured life-line, a fixed steel structure or anchor point that will
withstand the weight of the amount of persons attached to that anchor point.
(Anchor straps to be used)

 Chin strap on hard hats shall be used while at heights.

RISKS & HAZARDS

 Lay down areas to be stacked as per standard (items on top of wooden poles or pallets.
Adequate space between items so that it can be reached & handled safely)
 Lay down areas must be barricaded neatly.
 Possible tripping & slipping hazards to be removed from immediate work areas.
(Off-cut reinforcing bars, wooden pieces, big rock & stones.)
 Any person working above or close to water, where the possibility is to drown must use a life-
jacket at all times. A life-boy with rope must be available for rescue purposes

 Items being rigged or lifted via a mobile crane shall not be handled by bare hand, but
controlled with a guide rope.
 All risks and/or hazards on the construction site must be identified and recorded in a Job
specific Risk Assessment. All employees to sign the relevant Risk Assessment to indicate that
they were present and that they understand the risks and/or hazards involved with the task/job
they’re about to perform.
 Prevention controls or measures must be put in place to minimize or mitigate the risk or
hazards identified.
 Signage to be placed in the work areas to inform employees of possible dangers.

 Work areas to be barricaded to keep unauthorized persons out.


 Do not use metal ladders and hats near high voltage electricity. Accidental contact with the
overhead wires can cause serious injury or death.
 Do not place yourself or any part of any machinery you are working on any closer than 3.5
meters from overhead lines. If your machinery can come close to the lines due to error of
judgment, do not proceed. Do not attempt to climb any poles, or interfere with any power
boxes/DB boards on poles.
 If you have to work near any power lines, contact your Supervisor for assistants. Do not
proceed without advice from your Supervisor.
 Do not ride on mobile equipment/plant or any other construction vehicles.

HYGIENE AND SAFETY

 When using a toilet ensure that it is clean before you sit down.
 Always flush the toilet to get rid of unwanted items.
 Always leave the toilet in a clean condition for the next person to use.
 Do not store anything inside toilets/workshop areas or general premises that can burn or
explode.
 No food must be stored in the toilets/workshop/stores.
 Basins must always be washed and clean before you use it. Always leave it as clean as you
would like to get it yourself.
 Never use someone else’s safety boots, gloves or clothing and never wear someone else’s
respirator or dust masks. If that person is sick, you may also become ill.

9.
 Kitchens must always be clean, neat & tidy.
 All scraps and left over food must be disposed of into the correct waste bins.
 Before lunch times, please wash your hands.
 Always wash your “scuff tin” after you has eaten.

FACILITIES

 All facilities (toilets, eating facilities and change rooms) to be kept clean and tidy at all times.
 Toilet paper to be provided by the employer. (DO NOT use newspaper)

 Adequate toilets facilities to be provided on site. (ratio 1:10)


 Waste bins to be provided for the different types of waste on site.

ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY

 The company Environmental policy to be displayed in the site office.


 All employee need to ensure that they are doing their part in preserving the environment. If
clearing an area for construction, ask you supervisor / safety officer if there is any endangered
species of plant life or any animals.
 Rehabilitate the area after construction is completed.
 Do not pollute the environment. Use the relevant waste bins to dispose of specific waste.

POLLUTION AND SAFETY


Pollution comes in many forms:

 Oil, water, smoke, dust and many more.

 Ensure that if any of these items was spilled it gets cleaned up immediately. These spillages
are mostly called hazardous waste and may not be disposed of through normal facilities.
 Use a registered waste company to dispose of these wastes.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION

 In the case of an explosion, fire, collapsing of a structure, in a riot situation, bomb threats or
when required to evacuate by the client or any other type of emergency, all persons to
evacuate to the nearest assembly point.
 Evacuation routes to be posted on site and at all construction site offices.
 A roll call to be held to establish if all persons are present.
 Area of concern to be declared safe before people can return to their work areas.
 Emergency marshals to assist in all emergencies. (to be announced)
 Emergency coordinator to control the emergency situation.

FOLLOW THE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE.

GENERAL RULES

WHILE ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE YOU SHALL:

 Not bring alcohol drinks or drugs onto any premises or construction sites of the company. In
case of prescription medication, you shall obtain permission from your supervisor.

 Not consume alcohol or partake in the use of prohibited substances.

 Not make practical jokes, horseplay or be involved with any physical fighting.

 Not bring in any firearms or any type of weapon.

 Not use abusive language.


 Not assault or intimidate any person.
 Not hold unauthorised meetings.
 Not carry out private business within the company or on any construction sites.
 Not commit or be involved with criminal activities or offences.
 Not damage any of the company’s property.
 Not bring animals onto any construction site.

 Not bring in any unauthorised persons.


 Not brew liquor.
 Not bring in vehicles without the permission from the supervisor.
 Not display banners or flags of political nature without approval from Management.
 Not distribute political leaflets or newspapers without permission.
GENERAL

 Remember you are at all times responsible for your own safety and the effect that you have on
your fellow employees.
 Keep in mind that you have only one pair of ears, eyes, hands and feet and most of these
parts can not be repaired or be replaces.

 You and your family are the ones who will suffer when you don’t have work due to an accident
on the job.
 In South Africa our Environment is very important and we all must help to preserve it for all
generations to come.
 If you see someone doing something unsafe to his/her person or to the environment you must
report it immediately to your supervisor and/or SHE-Representative.
 Adhere to all safety legislation, rules, regulations and procedures. It is there to protect you.
 You have the right to refuse to do a task, if the task is unsafe to do or the area is unsafe. If
possible rectify the unsafe condition. Make the area safe and proceed with your task. Report
all unsafe areas and conditions to your Supervisor.

HEALTH AND SAFETY RULES

BASIC (CRITICAL FEW) HEALTH & SAFETY RULES, SAFE, EFFICIENT WORK
AGREEMENT

In accepting employment with MAESELA BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, I hereby agree that I will
perform my assigned duties in a safe and efficient manner. I will follow the safe work rules listed below
as well as other rules and instructions applicable to my particular job.

1. I will come to work physically fit and alert as I understand the hazard associated with a
person under the influence of
alcohol or other drugs that numb the senses and slows reaction time.

2. I will use the protective clothing and equipment prescribed for my job in the proper manner.

3. I will follow the instructions given by my Supervisor or inform him of the reason if it is not
possible to do so.

4. Before attempting something new or different I will discuss it with my Supervisor to avoid
causing an incident or possible
injury.

5. I will maintain the tools that I use in a safe condition and turn in defective tools to my
Supervisor.

6. If I need to perform work at elevated positions, I will ensure that the ladder I use is not
broken and has (non-slip) safety feet.
That metal ladders are not being used when working on electricity due to the very high risk
of electrocution.

7. I will not work at heights of over 2 metres or closer to any opening or edge where the
potential is to fall further than 2m
without using a safety harness and be attached, unless guard rails are in place to prevent
me from falling.

8. I will not clean up or perform any work on, or close to, unguarded machinery until I have
properly lock-out the electrical
switches and informing my Supervisor of the work that will be conducted.

9. I will not step onto a stopped conveyor belt or attempt to work in any place where I could be
injured if the machinery

10. I will not attempt to operate any vehicle or other machinery that I have not been trained for
or been authorized to operate by
my Supervisor.

11. I will only operate my assigned equipment/vehicle/machinery when I know that it is properly
guarded and all safety devices,
such as brakes, are in good working order. I will report any defects to my Supervisor
immediately.

12. I will not run or hurry down stairs or jump off a high place - know the high injury risk.

13. I will not engage in teasing, jostling and mock sparring or throwing objects, even playfully, as
such actions could lead to
injury to myself or others.

14. I will use compressed air only for work purposes, knowing that playful use or blowing off
work clothes can cause very
serious injury.

15. I will keep my work area reasonably clean and orderly and immediately clean up any spills
or tripping hazards. I will also ensure that my work area is cleaned after each task allocated to
me.

16. I will report any unsafe condition or practice that I notice to my Supervisor for correction. I
will report to my Supervisor any injury or incident that could have resulted in injury or equipment
damage before the end of my shift.

17. I will adhere to the Client’s Safety Rules and Regulations.

I have attended a Health and Safety Induction lecture and was made conversant with the Health
and Safety Rules of the Company and certain legal requirements as stipulated under the sections
and regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993. I have read and
understand the abovementioned duties, prohibitions and penalties and am aware of the risks,
dangers and hazards attached to my work and the precautionary measures to implement and
prevent injury to myself or others.

THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT THE EMPLOYEE ACCEPT ALL HEALTH, SAFETY AND
ENVIRONMENTAL RULES AND STANDARDS OF THE INDUCTION TRAINING PROGRAM.
