is a powerful reading and writing
strategy. It increases comprehension
and retention of information. When you
summarize, you restate the most
important information of a text, using
your own words.
SUMMARIZING
There are different techniques in
summarizing various text-based
elements. These techniques are used to
guide and help you summarize the text
you read.
1. Read the entire text first to understand
the author’s intent.

This is a critical stage in summarizing


because incomplete reading can lead to
an inaccurate summary. It is important to
take note that an inaccurate summary is
a plagiarism.
2. Present information through facts,
skills, and concepts in visual formats.

You may present information by


providing the cause and effects charts,
timelines, Venn diagrams, templates for
outlines, the use of flow charts, and
infographics.
3. Identify the main idea and supporting
details.

To avoid difficulty in summarizing,


it is vital to know the main idea and
supporting details. This will give you a
clear picture of the whole story of the
text you read.
4. Analyze the text to save time in
thinking about what you will do.

In this step, you need to think about what


information to write or include in your
summary. Be sure to cover and include
the main points and arguments of the
documents.
5. Restate the words into
a different one.

In summarizing, you should avoid using


the original words of the author; instead,
use your own vocabulary to express the
text but make sure to retain the
information. Paraphrasing is one skill
you may use in summarizing.
6. Organize your ideas.

Organize means writing down all


important information in a coherent,
accurate, and precise form.

In summarizing text, we can look at text


features, vocabulary, and topic sentence
to identify the most important details of
the text.
1. Observe text features.

Text features such as titles, subtitles,


texture/size, color, margin notes, etc. are
clues to a text’s most important
information – information you may want
to include in your summary.
2. Take note of highlighted vocabulary
words.
If a text gives you a list of important
vocabulary in its preview, take note of
these vocabulary words as they may be
important information that should be
included in your summary.
3. Identify the topic sentence.
When reading a long text, identify the
topic sentence in each paragraph. A
topic sentence holds the most important
information in a paragraph. Therefore, a
summary can be written simply by
