THE EFFECTS OF

SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY ON
SOCIETY
THE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY IN
SOCIETY
• Technology has advanced into many areas of our lives, making
information more accessible, improving communication, changing
transportation, and the list goes on. While it is easy to sit back and
benefit from a plethora of technological advancements, it is crucial
we do not become blind to its effects on society.
THE EFFECTS OF SCIENCE IN
SOCIETY
• science has changed how we live and what we believe. By making life
easier, science has given man the chance to pursue societal concerns
such as ethics, aesthetics, education, and justice; to create cultures;
and to improve human conditions. But it has also placed us in the
unique position of being able to destroy ourselves.
ON GOVERNMENT AND RELIGION
THE EFFECTS OF SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY IN GOVERNMENT
• TECHNOLOGY AS A TOOL FOR POLITICAL ACTORS - Perhaps
the most obvious way that technology impacts politics is as a tool for
political actors such as politicians, governments and other
organizations to better identify, engage with and rally members of the
public to their cause, as well as broadcast political messaging.
• TECHNOLOGY AS A TOOL FOR THE PUBLIC - The rise of digital
platforms, especially social media, has given private citizens the tools
to affect political change on a level like never before.
THE EFFECTS OF SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY IN RELIGION
• Religion metamorphosed as the awareness of people or society
expands. Thus religion likewise benefits from technology . The
invention of the printing press immeasurablu enhanced the spread if
the Word of God.
• the church as a spiritual sanctuary found itself at the center of
controversies involving several scientific and technological dogma.
Among them are:

(a) the outrage of the church to copernicus who proposed that the Sun
was at the center of the Solar System

(b) the Church's Inquisition over the use of Galileo of the telescope to
search the heavens for starss and planets to concur w/ Copernicus
Heliocentric Theory with contradicted the prevailing Geocentric Theory.
ON TRADE AND COMMERCE
THE EFFECTS OF SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY IN TRADE AND
COMMERCE
• Technology is a key factor in developing the economy, job creation and increasing
income levels, maintaining a sustainable growth and economic stability.
• European countries,Japan and the United States economically benefited from
the adoption of technology.
• Backwater economies like Taiwan,Korea,Malaysia and Singapore became
industrialized in a short span as a result of technological reasearch and
development.
• Capital and labor sectors have to contend with new processes like the increasing
computerization, automation,robotics technology, miniaturization effectively
decreasing the demand for human labor
Importance of Science and Technology in
Trade and Commerce
• It is more systematic and organized
• It makes buying things much easier
• It makes the productivity of things much faster
ON SOCIO-ECO SYSTEM AND
CONDITIONS
• The Industrial Revolution was the transition to new manufacturing
processes in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820
and 1840. This transition included going from hand production
methods to machines, new chemical manufacturing and iron
production processes, improved efficiency of water power, the
increasing use of steam power and the development of machine
tools. It also included the change from wood and other bio-fuels to
coal.

• Other features involved in th Industrial Revolution were socio-

Economic and cultural. The technological changes indcluded the
following:
(1) the invention of new machines, such as the spinning jenny and the
power loom that permitted increased production with a smaller
expenditure of human energy.
(2) a new organization of work known as the factory system, w/c entailed
increased division of labor and specialization of function
(3) important developments in transportation and communication,
including: steam locomotive, steamship, telegraph, radio, motion pictures
and later automobiles
(4) the increasing application of science and technology to industry and
society's general welfare.
There were also many new developments in non industrial spheres,
including the following:
(1) agricultural developments that made possible the provision of food
supplies for a larger non agricultural urban population
(2) economic changes that resulted in a wider distribution of wealth, the
declined of land as a source of wealth in the face of rising industrial
production, and increased international trade.
(3) sweeping social changes, including the growth of cities that gradually
shifted population migration from rural to urban-industrial settings
(4) the rise of working-class movements which actively campaigned for
higher wages, better working conditions and labor rights.
(5) new patterns of authority emerged in the realm of industrial
production
• overall benefits to the people took many forms There was easier
access to higher education and cheaper mass travel.More varied for
food, better health care, preserved by better medicine ,medical
treatment and new synthetic materialsn more housing facilities, and
wider automobile ownership.
• It sometimes seemed to glorify conspicous consumption ,immoral
acts, greed and indifference, especially when it passed some people
by.
• One of the by-products of the affluent society was self-doubt and self-
questioning-- the of kind of critical investigation of consumer values
and social responsibility taht made people unsure of their deeper
objectives
ON HUMAN PERCEPTION OF
REALITY
Effects of Science and Technology on
Human Perception of Reality

• The perception of an individual of reality occurs with the observations

made by the individual
• Discoveries have profound effects on human perceptions of what
reality is. It could not be accepted outright and some adverse
reactions will surely trigger debates but ultimately it will be
information provided by science and technology that will settle the
issues
ON HUMAN MUTAUL
DEPENDENCE
Effects of Science and Technology on
Human Mutual Dependence

• The vital point to consider in this section is the consequences of a

certain technology in terms of its tendency to increase or decrease
mutual dependence among socio-economic groupings and from these
synthesis ascertain the probable outcome of that technology's
introduction and adoption.
ON ENVIRONMENT & NATURAL
ECOSYSTEM
Effects of Science and Technology on the
Environment and Natural Ecosystems
• Worldwide emission of greenhouse gases have reached perilous levels that
acid rain, derived from sulfur and nitrogen oxides, unabated ause of toxic
chemicals that flow into our waterways, have affected health, industry and
agriculture.
• Ecological integrity is the short hand term for general health and resilience
of natural ecosystems.
• Science and technology cold act as both an agent of preservation of
destruction
• It is not technology itself that determines its suitability but how it is
properly utilized for the benefit of mankind now and for future generations
Some Important Contributions of
Technology
• Sweden is a Scandinavian country w/c utilized science and technology
to meet their economic needs. The nations eagerness and focus to
creative invention and ingenuity coupled with state support brought
progress to its economy.
• Gustaf de Laval invented the cream separator. During the first 15
years of operation it had produced 100,000 machines and exported
four- fifths of them.
• Another inventor named Birger Ljunstrom with the assistance of
Alfred novel developed a bicycle with an adjustable gear shift. By
1908, together with his brother Fredrick, established a manufacturing
entity producing large turbines.
• Another enterprising individual Per Froms who had served as an
apprentice with a company named Bollinders, founded the Husquana
Company that manufactured bicycles. His products were recognizes
and exported around the world
