Ischemia: By/Dr - Abdisamad Omar Ali

Ischemia is a condition caused by low oxygen delivery to tissues, known as hypoxia, which commonly results from decreased blood flow. The main causes of hypoxia are ischemia, hypoxemia, and decreased oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Ischemia occurs when there is a blockage in the arteries, such as due to atherosclerosis, cutting off blood supply and oxygen to tissues, which can lead to cell death through necrosis if blood flow is not restored in time through reperfusion. Without sufficient oxygen delivery, cells cannot produce adequate ATP for survival. Neurons are especially vulnerable to injury from ischemia.

ISCHEMIA

By/Dr.Abdisamad omar ali

Cellular injury
 A cellular injury occurs when a stress exceeds cells
ability to adapt

 The likelihood of injury depends on the type of

stress, its severity, and the type of cell affected

1. Neurons are highly susceptible to ischemic injury,

whereas, skeletal muscle is relatively more resistant
Common causes of cellular
injury

1. Inflammation
2. Nutritional deficiency or excess
3. Hypoxia
4. Trauma
5. Genetic mutations
Hypoxia
 Low oxygen delivery to tissue (important
cause of cellular injury)

 Decreased oxygen impairs resulting in

decreased ATP production

 Lack of ATP (essential energy source) leads to

cellular injury
Causes of hypoxia

1. Ischemia

2. Hypoxemia

3. Decreased carrying capacity of

blood
