Some of the key places they visited included Dresden, Germany where Rizal studied botany; Leitmeritz, Czech Republic where Rizal first met his friend Blumentritt; Vienna, Austria where Rizal was impressed by the art and culture; Switzerland including Geneva where the two friends parted ways with Viola returning to Spain and Rizal continuing on to Italy alone. In Italy, Rizal was most amazed by Rome and its ancient architecture but after a week he was ready to return home to the Philippines.

    novelist in Europe. He admired
    Rizal.

    In Munich, they stopped for a
    while to taste the famous beer

     After Munich they visited UlmThe cathedral
    of this city was the largest.
    Viola recalled Rizal climbed its many
    hundred steps, ascended without resting and
    was not tired upon reaching top.

    Europe”

    returned to Barcelona and Rizal went to Italy

     In another letter to Blumentritt dated


    Geneva June 19, 1887.
    Rizal said he was in favor of holding an
    exposition but ‘not an exposition of odd
    individuals, showing our country men as a
    curiosity to entertain the idle individuals of
    Madrid.

    ◈ June 27, 1887

    ◈ Describing to Bluementritt, the “grandeur that was
    Rome”, he wrote on June 27, 1887.
    RIZAL IN ROME!

    ◈ Rizal astonished on everything he saw around


    him. And as a native people in a small island,
    Rizal feels like he was in a sanctuary.
    ◈ Rizal already seen the:
    The Capitolium, The Tarpeian Rock, The
    Palatinum, The Forum Romanum, The
    Amphitheatre. Etc.
    ◈ Rizal said that everything was glorious
    except the cafés and the café singers
    RIZAL FAVORITE PLACES IN ROME
    ◈ The Amphitheater and the Roman Forum.
    ◈ He also visited churches and museums.
    Like the Capitoline Museum and the
    Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which is
    grandiose.
    THE FEAST DAY OF ST. PETER

    AND ST. PAUL


    ◈ Rizal visited for the first time the Vatican, the
    “City of the Popes” and the capital of
    Christendom.
    ◈ Rizal was deeply impressed by the magnificent
    edifices, particularly of: St. Peter’s Church, St.
    Peter’s Square, Papal Guards and the Vatican.
    RIZAL RETURNED TO HIS
    HOTEL
    ◈ “I am tired as a dog”, he wrote to
    Bluementritt, “but I will sleep as a
    god”.
    AFTER A WEEK OF WONDERFUL
    SOJOURN IN ROME
    ◈ He prepared to return to the Philippines. He had
    already written to his father that
    he was coming home.
