MATERIAL SELF – ACCORDING TO W. JAMES IS ABOUT
OUR BODIES, CLOTHES, IMMEDIATE FAMILY AND HOME. WE
ARE DEEPLY AFFECTED WITH THESE THINGS BECAUSE WE HAVE
PUT MUCH INVESTMENT OF OUR SELF TO THEM
Body

Clothes

Immediate
family

Home
BODY – INNER MOST PART OF OUR MATERIAL SELF.
WE STRIVE HARD TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS BODY
FUNCTIONS WELL AND GOOD.

CLOTHES – the essential part of the

material self. It represents our self.
IMMEDIATE FAMILY – THESE PEOPLE LIKELY
SHAPE AND INFLUENCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ONE’S
SELF AND IDENTITY .

HOME – HOME IS WHERE OUR HEART IS.

-IT IS THE EARLIEST NEST OF OUR SELFHOOD.
OUR EXPERIENCES INSIDE THE HOME WERE
RECORDED AND MARKED ON PARTICULAR PARTS AND
THINGS IN OUR HOME. THUS THE HOME IS AN
EXTENSION OF SELF BECAUSE IN IT, WE CAN
DIRECTLY CONNECT OUR SELF
THE ROLE OF MATERIAL POSSESSIONS ON
THE SENSE OF SELF AND IDENTITY

 Regardless of how much or how little material possessions people

have they remain valuable because these possessions are symbolic
of one’s social status.

 Russell Belk (1988) – suggests that material possessions act as

an objective manifestation of the self.
Material possessions can be a reflection of hard work and success.
 Materialism – refers to giving more importance to material
possessions that intangible values.
 Compulsive Buying Disorder – characterized by an obsession
with shopping and buying behaviors that can cause adverse
consequences (e.g. debts)

 Thus, when a person is about to make a purchase, he or she should

ask himself or herself a very important question:
DO I REALLY NEED THIS?
Consumerism – is the consumption of material goods and services
in excess of one’s basic needs. It is closely tied to materialism
 Go back to your Debit Card Challenge List. Put a mark on the left side of each
item with the following categories:
B = if the item is related with your body
C = if the item is related to clothes
F = if the item is related or intended to your family
H = if the item is related with home

 Which among the categories you have the most in your list?
 What do you think these things tell you about yourself?

 The possessions that we dearly have tell something about

who we are, our self-concept, our past, and even our future.
