Chapter 7: Graphs Olivia Chen Mathematics

Parallel Lines

Parallel lines are a fixed distance apart and will never meet, no matter how long they are extended. Lines
that are parallel have the same gradient.

The graphs above, 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1 and 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 2 have the same gradient of 2.

The lines are parallel.

Exercise 7.4
1. Write the equation of the line is that is parallel to the given equation and passes through the given
point.

Perpendicular Lines

Perpendicular lines will always cross at right angles.

To determine if two lines are perpendicular, we need to multiply their gradients together. If the lines are
perpendicular to each other, the product of their gradients will be -1.

We say 𝒎𝟏 × 𝒎𝟐 = −𝟏, where 𝑚1 is the gradient of the first line and 𝑚2 is the gradient of the second line.

Distance between Two Points
Distance between two points is the length of the line segment that connects the two given points.
