Cell Division

This lesson plan for high school biology focuses on cell division, specifically mitosis and meiosis, and aims to help students understand its importance in growth, repair, and reproduction. The 60-minute lesson includes an introduction, detailed explanation of cell division, comparison of mitosis and meiosis, and a class activity for hands-on learning. Assessment will be based on participation, homework, and a quiz in the following class.

Lesson Plan: Cell Division

Grade Level: 9-12

Subject: Biology
Duration: 60 minutes
Topic: Cell Division

Lesson Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Define cell division.
2. Explain the importance of cell division in growth, repair, and reproduction.
3. Differentiate between mitosis and meiosis.
4. Describe the stages of mitosis.

Materials Needed:
 Whiteboard and markers
 Diagrams of cell cycle and mitosis
 Microscope and prepared slides (if available)
 Handouts with diagrams and key points
 Animations or videos on cell division (optional)

Lesson Procedure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
 Begin with a question: “Why do you think our bodies need to produce new
cells?”
 Briefly discuss the importance of cell division in growth, healing, and
reproduction.
 Connect to previous lessons on cells and DNA.
2. Explanation of Cell Division (15 minutes)
 Define cell division.
 Introduce two main types: Mitosis and Meiosis.
 Highlight the significance of each:
o Mitosis: growth, repair, asexual reproduction.

o Meiosis: sexual reproduction, genetic diversity.

3. Mitosis in Detail (20 minutes)

 Use diagrams or animations to illustrate the stages:
o Prophase

o Metaphase

o Anaphase

o Telophase

 Explain each stage clearly.

 Show a real or prepared slide of a cell in mitosis (if available).
4. Comparison of Mitosis and Meiosis (10 minutes)
 Create a table comparing:
o Number of divisions

o Number of daughter cells

o Genetic similarity/difference

o Function

5. Class Activity (10 minutes)

 Students label diagrams of mitosis stages.
 Or, simulate cell division using models or role-play.

6. Summary and Closure (5 minutes)

 Recap key points.
 Ask questions to assess understanding.
 Assign homework: Draw and label the stages of mitosis.

Assessment:
 Participation in activities.
 Homework diagram.
 Short quiz at the next class.
Additional Resources:
 Khan Academy Cell Division Videos
 Interactive animations (if available).
