Let’s Think!

Activity 1
Directions: Read the situation below. Then, answer the questions that
follow.

A classmate comes up to you and accuses you of stealing her money. She
even adds angrily that the amount she claims that is stolen from her is just
enough for her to commute going home after classes. Naturally, assuming you
didn’t steal anything, you would deny it? Your classmate doesn’t believe you,
saying that you were the only person in the room when she found out she lost
her money. Plus, you are her seatmate and you’re the nearest one to her bag
where her money is, she adds. Assuming again, that her arguments are right,
how would you defend yourself?

3.4 Abstraction Lesson Proper

WHAT IS A CLAIM?

 A claim the main point, the central argument or the thesis statement of a text.
 It is what the writer tries to prove in the text by providing details,
explanations, and other types of evidence.
 It is a sentence that summarizes the most important thing that the writer
wants to say as a result of his/her thinking, reading, or writing.

Characteristics of a Good Claim

 A claim should be argumentative and debatable.


 A claim should be specific and focused.
 A claim should be interesting and engaging.
 A claim should be logical.

Three Types of Claims

1. Claim of Fact

Examples:

• Sometimes people use Facebook, Twitter, and other social media


to bully one another.
• Converting to solar energy can save homeowners money.
• Increasing population threatens the environment.

2. Claim of Value

Examples:
• Studying abroad is better than studying at a local university.

• It is wrong to use social media to bully people.
• Watching television is a wasteful activity.
3. Claim of Policy

Examples:
• The government should create an effective plan to address the
traffic.
• There should be criminal charges brought against people who use
social media to bully people.
• Children in low-income families should receive medical insurance
from the government

I. Tell whether the following statements are good claims or not.

II. Read the following statements. Identify what type of claim does each
statement belong. Write FACT, VALUE, or POLICY.

1. Marathon is the most strenuous physical challenge.


2. Some people act selfishly amidst of the lockdown by not following the strict
protocol of the government.
3. Since face-to-face learning cannot be drastically and consistently done, the
idea of blended learning is a very practical.
4. The oldest known disease is leprosy.
5. Honesty is the best policy.
6. Technology is unavoidable in our daily lives.
7. Due to the new condition brought by the pandemic, adjustments in the
Philippine educational system must be done to cater the needs of the students.
8. An improved sewer system would solve these flood drainage problems.
9. Agriculture produces a lot of carbon emissions, leading to global warming.
10. Some crimes are worse than others.
