B. PRESENTATION AND MODELLING

1. Now class, are you familiar with those
Introduction of words found inside the puzzle.
the Lesson
Very Good. So, who can guess our
topic for today? Circulatory System,
Ma’am!

That’s correct. For today’s meeting,

our discussion will revolve around the
Circulatory System.

The Circulatory System is the life

support structure that nourishes your
cells with
nutrients from the food you eat and
2. oxygen from the air you breathe.
Presentation of the Lesson
Another name for the Circulatory System
is the Cardiovascular System. Your
circulatory system also removes carbon
dioxide and other wastes your cells do not
need.
Since it is a system, it is expected that it
is composed of some parts. The
Circulatory System has three major parts.
The Circulatory System
Can someone enumerate the those is composed of Blood,
three? Blood Vessel, and the
Heart.
That’s right. Thank you, class.

Blood is like a messenger that makes

trillions of stops in thirty seconds. Blood is
the transport tissue in your body. It
carries needed materials to the cells and
carries waste materials away from the Centrifuge, ma’am.
cells.

In here you can see a certain

machine, what do you call this tool It uses centrifugal force.
class?
Yes. Now How does a centrifuge work?
C
Very good. A centrifuge is a device that
uses centrifugal force to separate various
components of a fluid. if we will place a
test tube which is filled with blood and It will form layers, ma’am.
then place that test tube inside the
centrifuge what do you think would
happen to the blood?
Very good. From that observation we can
say that blood has different components.
Plasma, ma’am.
Can anyone name at least 1
component of blood?
Yes. Plasma is a component of blood.
Actually class, our blood has 4
components.
Let us talk first about the liquid part of
blood is called plasma. Plasma contains
digested food, chemicals, and waste
products. These substances are carried
to and from the cells by the plasma.
The other three kinds of blood cells
make up the solid part of the blood.
Now class, what gives the blood its Hemoglobin is the
red color? reason why our blood is
red in
color.
Wow. You surely did read in
advance. Very good.
Red blood cells contain hemoglobin.
Hemoglobin is the protein inside red
blood cells and gives blood its color. Red
blood Cells have two main functions:
1.) To pick up oxygen from the lungs
and deliver it to tissues elsewhere.
2.) To pick up carbon dioxide from
other tissues and unload it in the lungs.

White blood cells are larger than red

blood cells. They are the one who’s
responsible to fight infection and disease.
They
destroy harmful bacteria, viruses and
other small invaders. Platelets are pieces
of cells that are small and colorless.
They help to stop bleeding by giving off a
chemical that helps blood to clot.

Now that we’re done talking about blood,

let us proceed to the second component
of the circulatory which is the Blood
Vessel. Just like its name, it carries
the blood throughout the body.

C
There are three kinds of blood vessel,
class. What are these?
We have ma’am the
That’s correct. Each of these plays a artery, capillary, and vein.
very specific role in the circulation
process

Arteries carry blood away from the heart.

This blood is rich in oxygen and
nutrients. It is brought to the cells of the
body.
Capillaries connect arteries and veins
and are very tiny. The majority of the
blood vessels in your body are capillaries.

Lastly, is the Vein. Do you have any

idea as to how this blood vessel works It carries blood
class? towards the heart,
ma’am.
That’s right. They’re similar to arteries
but not as strong or as thick. Vein is a
blood vessel that carries deoxygenated
blood
from the body back to the heart.

Now that we are done with both the blood

and blood vessels, it is time for us to
learn about the heart. The heart is the
powerhouse of the circulatory system. It
continuously moves blood throughout the
body providing oxygenated blood and
nutrients while also carrying waste and
returning that deoxygenated blood back to
the lungs.
A healthy human heart has four main
chambers. 2 upper chambers called atria
and two lower chambers called ventricles
and we have one of each on each side of
the heart. We have the right atrium, right
ventricle, and left atrium and left
ventricle.
Understanding the flow of blood in the
cardiac system is vital for us to be able
to understand the problems that can
come up along the way.
Let’s start with the deoxygenated blood
returning to the heart via the superior
and inferior vena cava. Inferior vena
cava
which has blood originating from the trunk,
visceral organs in the lower body and the
superior vena cava which has blood
originating from the head and upper
body. This blood goes into the right
atrium. The right atrium then contracts
the blood
through the tricuspid valve into the right
ventricle. The right ventricle then contracts

C
ejecting the blood through the pulmonary
valve into the pulmonary artery.
Would it be possible that the blood will
go back to the right atrium? In normal
circumstances class, no. No, ma’am.
There are valves in our heart. Each of
these valve’s act as a 1-way valve to
prevent backflow of blood in the
system. Now, what would happen if
there is a
backflow? Regurgitation happens.
Regurgitation is when a valve doesn't
close properly and blood leaks
backward instead of moving in the
proper one-way flow.
Going back, the pulmonary artery
branches and carries blood into the left
and right lung to receive oxygen and
release carbon dioxide. After the blood
leaves the lungs, the oxygenated blood
return to the heart via the pulmonary
veins. The pulmonary veins empty the
blood into the left atrium, the left atrium
contracts the blood through the mitral
valve into the left ventricle. The left
ventricle then contracts ejecting that blood
through the aortic valve into the aorta and
unto the rest of the body.

For us to understand and visualize the

flow of blood in the heart, let us all (The students will be
watch this short video. watching a 2 -minute
video.)

Okay that’s it. Did it help you

understand better class?
Yes, ma’am!

Thank you. What I want you to do now

class is you trace the flow of blood from (The students will answer
the right and left side of your heart. the short activity.)

Now it is time for us to tackle about the

three types of circulation in the body.

C
These are pulmonary circulation, coronary

C
circulation and systemic circulation.
Pulmonary circulation refers to movement
of blood from the heart, to the lungs, and
back to the heart. Coronary circulation
refers to the movement of blood
through the tissues of the heart while
Systemic circulation refers to the
movement of
blood from the heart to the rest of
the body.

C. GUIDED PRACTICE (Will be executed before Lesson Proper)

1. Activity Now class, I want you get a stopwatch
because we will need it for the following
activity. This activity will help us calculate
how many beats can our heart produce
in 1 minute.
Directions:

1.Locate your pulse points either on your

wrists or necks. Place your right index (The Students will follow
and middle finger on the palm side of your all instructions.)
left wrist. On the neck, the pulse point is
located beneath the ear and jawbone.

2. Count the number of beats in 15

seconds. Multiply this by four (15x4=60,
there are 60 seconds in one minute).

3. Do jumping jacks for thirty seconds.

Stop and calculate pulse again over
15 seconds.

2. Analysis Now class. What did you feel right We were out of breath,
after executing the exercise? and our heart is
beating rapidly.
Okay some of us panted right after
the exercise.
When we are at rest, our heart beats
slowly and we also breathe slowly
because we aren’t moving and our
muscles don’t need an extra amount of
oxygen. But if we try to do strenuous
activity such as exercising, our body
may need three or four times our normal
cardiac output, because our muscles need
more oxygen when we exert ourselves.
Meanwhile, our lungs are also taking in
more air, hence the harder breathing.
We panted right after. The same is true
with our heart, since our lungs is forcing
a lot of oxygen in our heart, it should be

C
circulated all throughout our body that’s
why our heart starts beating rapidly.

3. Discussing new concept (The students can now

and practicing new skills calculate their own
heart rate.)

4. Abstraction (The teacher will present

scenarios where
knowing one’s heart
rate is important.)

C
D. PRACTICE
1. Application (Developing Mastery) Okay now let us proceed to
our group activity this meeting.
This will be done by group no
so I’ve already divided the
class into 2 groups.
