1. Activity:
A.) Preliminary Activity:
Prayer
Checking of Attendance
Classroom Rules
Review on the previous discussion
(Respiratory System)

B.) Motivation/Energizer:
1.) The teacher will ask the students to find a
partner.
2.) Have the students locate their own pulse
by placing their fingers on their wrist.
Instruct the students if they have felt a
throb then they have located their pulse.
Instruct NOT to use their thumb.
3.) Next allow the other partner to locate their
partner’s pulse and vice versa.
4.) After recording their pulse rate “at rest”,
allow students to do a jog in place then
record their pulse rate “after exercise”
5.) The teacher will then asks students with
the following questions:
What happens to your pulse rate Our pulse rate slows down when we are resting while our
“at rest” and “after exercise”? pulse rate “after exercise” became faster.

Was your “at rest” pulse the same No, the pulse rate of my partner is not the same as mine.
as your partners? (the pulse rate varies from person to person)

Why do we feel a throb/pulses in Because of the pumping of the blood from the heart.
our body?

C.) Presentation of the Objectives:

Towards the end of the lesson, you are
expected to:

Please read the objectives. a.) define circulatory system;

b.) identify the main parts and functions
of circulatory system;
c.) develop the value of cooperation
through understanding how heart,
blood, and blood vessels work as a
system in transporting nutrients,
gases and other molecules to the
different parts of the body.

D.) Activity Proper:

a.) Introduction
Over a year into the pandemic, we now
understand a lot more about Covid-19, and
how the virus affects the body.
Even though the coronavirus was
initially thought of as a respiratory illness,
we know that it can also affect other
organs and systems in our body.
b.) Activity 1:
The teacher will group the
students into three groups.
Each group will be given cut outs
on the parts of the circulatory
system.
The teacher will ask each group to
arrange the given cut outs to form
the whole picture.
A representative from each group
will be asked to present their
corresponding output in front of
the class.
2. Analysis:
How do you find the activity?
What are the pictures formed? Answers may vary
The pictures formed are part of what organ Blood, heart, and Blood vessels
system? Circulatory System
Why do you think that those pictures are
parts of the circulatory system? Because they function for blood circulation throughout the
body.
Now, let us go back to the pictures and
analyse their functions and location in the
body using this table:
Part of the Function Location
Circulatory Part of the Function Location
System Circulatory
System

Heart throughout the lungs
body
Blood Carries materials Entire part body
(nutrients and
gases)throughout
the body
Blood vessels Carries blood Entire part of the

towards the heart
or throughout the
body

Circulation starts from the pumping out of blood from the

What can you say about the table you have heart which carries nutrients and other materials through
accomplished? How does circulation takes the blood vessels and to be carried away and towards the
place? heart and throughout the body.
3. Abstraction:
The movement of blood through the vessels
induced by the pumping action of the heart is
called circulation.

The system that made this process possible is? The Circulatory System
Verygood!

Circulatory system is a system responsible for the

flow of blood, nutrients, and gases to be
transported to and from the heart and to the
different parts of the body.

It functions to circulate oxygen and remove

carbon dioxide from the body.
It also provide cells the nutrients we need.

Aside from the functions that I’ve mentioned, what It can also protect the body against diseases and infections.
else can you add?
Verygood!
There are 3 main parts of the Circulatory System
The Circulatory System has how many main parts?
Correct!
What are those? The Heart, Blood, and Blood Vessels
Verygood!

That is the reason why Circulatory System is also

called as a Cardiovascular System because when
we talk of the word “Cardio”, it basically means
the Heart, and “Vascular”, which means Blood
vessels.

So let’s discuss the three main parts of the

Circulatory System one by one.
What can you say about the Heart? The heart is a hollow organ that pumps out blood
Correct! throughout the body.

The heart is a hollow muscle which is located

between the lungs. Do you know the size of our Answers may vary (Yes/No)
heart?
The heart weighs between 7 to 15 ounces (200 to
425 grams). It has four chambers:
Right Atrium (RA)
Left Atrium (LA)
Right Ventricle (RV)
Left Ventricle (LV)

The two atrium

or atria are the receiving chambers of the heart,
accepting blood from the body (Right atrium) and
from the lungs (Left Atrium).

If the atria are the receiving chambers how about

the ventricles? The ventricles are the pumping chambers of the heart.
Correct!

The Ventricles pumps blood to the lungs (Right

Ventricle) and pumps blood into the body (Left
Ventricle).

The heart is said to have two pumps. In this

diagram:

One part of the pump circulates deoxygenated

blood from the heart to the lungs and oxygenated
blood from the lungs to the heart, then the other
part of the pump supplies oxygenated blood from
the heart to all parts of the body and deoxygenated
blood from all parts of the body to the heart.

The pump that circulates deoxygenated blood from

the heart to the lungs is what we call as
Pulmonary Circulation while the pump that
circulates oxygenated blood from the heart to the
different parts of the body is also called as the
Systemic Circulation.

It is the part where Respiratory system is also used

in these double circulation of the heart.

Always remember that each time our heart beats,

oxygen-rich blood is being delivered to our body
for it to function properly. The heart rate or pulse
is the number of times our heart beats per minute
(BPM).
Next we go to another main part which is the blood
vessel. What can you say about the blood vessel?
Verygood!

Blood vessels are pathways where blood circulates

or flows. There are 3 types of blood vessels:
Arteries
Capillaries
Veins
Blood vessels carry blood throughout the body.
Arteries are the largest blood vessel that carry
oxygenated blood away from the heart, to the
cells, tissues and organs of the body except for the
Pulmonary Artery which carries deoxygenated
blood from the heart to the lungs.

As you can see in the picture, the artery has very

thick wall. The central space or what we call as
lumen is small and narrow.

What do you think is the largest artery in the

body?
Verygood!

Capillaries are the smallest blood vessel that

connect the arteries to the veins. It is where the
nutrients and gas exchange occur.

The largest artery in the body is the Aorta.

Based on the picture, what can you say about the

lumen and the wall of the capillary?
Correct!

Since the capillaries are the smallest blood vessels

in the body, it is also obvious that their walls and
lumens are also very thin and very small.
The last blood vessel is the Veins. The veins are
the second largest blood vessel in the body. It
carries deoxygenated blood towards the heart
except for Pulmonary Vein which carries
oxygenated blood towards the heart.

The largest veins are the two vena cavas. Based on

the picture, what are the two vena cava? The lumen of the capillary is very small and the wall is
very thin.
Here is an animation on how the blood flows
through the blood vessels from the heart and back
to the heart again.

So again, what are the three types of blood

vessels?
Verygood!

Next we proceed to the third main part of the

circulatory system which is the blood.

What is the function of the blood?

The two vena cava are the Superior Vena Cava and the
Blood also functions for blot clots to prevent Inferior Vena Cava.
excess blood loss and fights infections and
diseases.
The blood also has different components:
Plasma
Red blood cells (RBC)
White blood cells (WBC) The three types of blood vessels are Arteries, Capillaries,
Platelets and Veins.

The blood carries the nutrients throughout the body.

The
picture shows the components of the blood. In
order for the blood to show its components, it
needs to be centrifuged. A Centrifuge is an
equipment used to separate components of
substances or fluids. Here is an image of a
centrifuge.

Once the blood is centrifuged it will show its

components:

What do you
call the upper portion of the centrifuged blood?

Plasma is the liquid component of the blood

which is a mixture of water, sugar, fat, protein,
and salts.

Next is the portion of white blood cells and

platelets.

Platelets which is also called as thrombocytes are

not actually cells but rather small fragments of
cells. This portion of the blood helps in blood
clotting process.
The Plasma is the upper portion of the blood.
White Blood Cells (WBC) is also called as
leukocytes which helps the body protect from
infections. They are much fewer in number than
red blood cells.

And the last one are the?

Red Blood Cells (RBC) is also called as

erythrocytes and these are the most abundant cells
in the blood. It functions to carry oxygen into the
body.

To summarize, again what are the parts of the

Circulatory System:
Verygood!

What are the functions of the following:

Heart
Blood Vessels
Blood The Red blood cells
