What is Olympic Game?
The modern Olympic Games or Olympics are the world’s leading
international sporting events. They feature summer and winter
sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around
the world participates in a variety of competitions. The Olympic
Games are considered the world’ s foremost sports competition,
with more than 200 teams, representing sovereign states and
territories, participating. By default, the Games generally
substitute for any world championships during the year in which
they take place. The Olympics are staged every four years. Since
1994, they have alternated between the Summer and Winter
Olympics every two years during the four-year Olympiad.

Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, held

in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.
‘Baron Pierre de Coubertin’ founded the ‘International Olympic
Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in
Athens in 1896. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic
Movement, which encompasses all entities and individuals
involved in the Olympic Games. The Olympic Charter defines
their structure and authority.

India and the Olympics

India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, becoming

the first Asian nation to do so. ‘Norman Pritchard’ represented
the country and won two medals, both silvers, in athletics. The
nation first sent a team to summer Olympic Games in 1920 and
has participated in every Summer Games since then. India has
competed at several Winter Olympic Games after its debut in
1964.

Indian athletes have won 41 medals, all the Summer Games. At

a period of time during the 1900s, the ‘Indian men’s field hockey
team was dominant in the Olympics between 1928 and 1980
including eight gold medals of which six were won consecutively
from 1928 to 1956. India’s best performance happened at the
2020 Games, with seven medals including a gold and two silver.

Conclusion
India’s journey in the Olympics has showcased significant
progress, transitioning from an early dominance in hockey to a
broader success across individual sports in recent years. While
India has faced challenges in competing with top-tier nations,
recent achievements indicate a promising upward trajectory.
Top countries in the Olympics—such as the United States, China,
and Russia—continue to lead the medal tables due to their robust
sporting infrastructure, investment in athlete development, and
extensive talent pools. The U.S. stands out for its consistently
high medal count, supported by a deep commitment to nurturing
talent across a wide range of sports. China has emerged as a
powerhouse, especially in gymnastics, diving, and table tennis,
and invests heavily in sports training from an early age. Russia,
with its stronghold in events like gymnastics, wrestling, and
winter sports, has historically performed well despite various
challenges.
India’s recent successes—such as Abhinav Bindra’s historic
shooting gold in 2008, Neeraj Chopra’s javelin gold in 2020, and
medal achievements in badminton, boxing, and wrestling—show
the country’s growing capability to contend internationally. With
increasing investment, improved training facilities, and
government and corporate support, India has the potential to
compete more closely with these top nations.
