Answer the following questions based on what you have observed in class.
1. What can you say about the physical learning environment in terms of
psychological aspect (e.g., interaction patterns, non-threatening environment)?
As the teacher enters the room, everyone must be in their seats and minimize their
voices. Most of the students I have observed have respect for the teacher. The
teacher, on the other hand, fosters positivity in the class by throwing punch lines
that students relate to. She also promotes inclusivity by acknowledging and
understanding each student's background. However, there were times that jokes
almost crossed the line. I know her intention was good, but it sometimes hinders
students’ participation and confidence in the class. But overall, the learning
environment is safe and student-friendly.
2. In your opinion, how can a school’s learning environment be improved?
For me, since the school is so large and has a large student population, the
school should invest more in security. And I believe it is important and relevant to
discuss this because a month ago, a killing occurred within the school. And this
instills fear in the entire school. Thus, school administrators must step up their
efforts to offer a safe and student-friendly environment that eliminates fear in
students and teachers.
3. How does Maslow's theory explain the vital role of security and safety in
facilitating learning?
Our human needs are hierarchically organized, according to Maslow's theory. To
progress to the next level, you must first meet the lower-level needs. The same
concept applies to facilitating classroom learning. After we have met student's
physiological demands, we will secure the school's learning environment. To allow
learning to occur, we must ensure that the learning environment is safe. It is critical
to meet these prerequisites because if not, we will be unable to progress to the
next level, which is the love and belongingness needs. If the school is unsafe, the
teacher will be unable to establish connections with his or her children, and thus
learning will not occur. Thus, security and safety needs is vital in facilitating
learning to happen.
