DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

LECTURE PLAN CE412

Subject Name: Traffic & Transportation Engineering Subject Code: CE412

Semester / Year: 1 / 2022 Date prepared: 12/02/2022

Lecturer: Mr. Murray Matarab Konzang Credit hours (PNG Standard): 18

Period: Credit hours: 6

Monday 1pm – 3 pm (Engineering Accreditation Standard)

Tuesday 10 am – 12 noon
Friday 1 pm – 3 pm

Actual hours: 6 hours per week (3 hours’ lecture, 1-hour tutorial, 2 hours’ field study).

Subject Synopsis: This subject covers traffic engineering and transport systems. The traffic
engineering covers the analytical procedures and computational methods employed in a wide
variety of tasks related to traffic operations and safety. This course identifies operational
problems to carry out traffic engineering studies and evaluate alternative solutions. The focus
on transport systems is data collection, demand forecasting, impact assessment, freight
transport, externalities and energy. The subject reviews public transport, airport planning,
seaport operations. The course introduces the concepts of characterizing traffic, various
modelling approaches, and design of facilities to control and manage traffic.

Evaluation: Design project, assignment, test, audio visual presentation and final examination

On completion of this subject students will be able to:

1. Collate and analyse data and apply the findings to ease traffic
Subject congestion
Learning 2. Review the parameters of congested areas and design solutions
Outcomes to provide improved safety with minimal environmental impact.
(SLOs) 3. Apply modelling and simulations to obtain quantitative
computational solutions to traffic flow problems
4. Design Intelligent Transport System
