The Glass Bottle


PART I
Hassan and Walid are brothers. They live in a small house / castle/ flat in the desert, near the mountains, a
long way from a town or village.
They’re very good / rich/ poor. They have no money and we / they / them have no animals. Their house only
has two / three / four rooms. Every day is the same. They get up, and they have sweet / bitter / salty black
coffee for breakfast. Then, Hassan works in the fields – but Walid just sits and looks at the hot, empty desert
and the hot, empty sky / ski / sigh.
They live with their mother. She looks after him / them / her, but she’s old and tired.
One day she says, ‘We’re poor and hungry. Why don’t you leave here and find work? We need money for
food and clothes.’
‘If you want some money, you have your silver ring – you can sell that,’ answers Walid.
‘I can’t sell it / him / them,’ she says. ‘It’s your father’s. Every night I look at it and remember us / her /
him.’
Hassan wants to help his mother, and he decides to leave home. His mother gives him bread, and water in a
glass bottle. He kisses us / her / him, and he walks towards the mountains.

PART II
Hassan walks for five days through the mountains, the sun shines. At night, it’s very cold. Then, one evening,
he arrives at a rich and beautiful palace. The prince in the palace welcomes us / her / him. He gives him food
and drink, and Hassan sleeps in a comfortable bed. There is one strange thing – the windows have no glass.
The next day, Hassan says goodbye. She / He / They wants to thank the prince and give us / her / him

‘What’s this?’ he says. ‘I can see through it! It’s beautiful! It’s wonderful!’

Hassan walks through the mountains again, and after five days he arrives home. Walid and their mother watch

The next night, Walid makes a plan. ‘100 gold coins in return for a glass bottle,’ she / he / they thinks. ‘If I
give the prince my mother’s silver ring, perhaps, I can get 1,000 gold coins!’
So Walid gets up, he goes very quietly into his mother’s room, and takes her ring from a box under her bed.
The next morning he asks his brother where the palace is, and he leaves…

Adjectives for Personality Characteristics
The personality traits a person has are descriptive of the individual's character. These terms aren’t always
positive or negative, but rather they are simply descriptive in nature. After all, personality traits simply
reflect the individual differences that make us who we are.

Life at FC Barcelona’s home for young players
A school of football and values
What is life for boys at this residence? Martin, a 13-year-old boy, answers our
questions.
Do you get up early?
Yes, we do. We get up at 6.45am and tidy our room. We have breakfast at 7 am and
go to school.
Do you go to school by bus?
Yes, we do. We have classes from 8am to 2pm. Then we come back and have lunch at 2.15pm.
Do you train after lunch?
No, we don’t. after lunch, we have some free time. Then we do our homework from 4pm to 6pm. We have extra classes
with private tutors if we need help. We train in the evening from 7pm to 8.45pm.
And then?
We have a shower and we have dinner at 0.30 pm. After dinner, we go to the playroom.
We watch TV, connect to the internet or play games. We go to bed at 10.30pm.
Is football the most important aspect of your life?
No, it isn’t. Football is important but values are important too. We learn to be good people
and respect others. We also learn that school work is important. Some boys never
become professional football players. We all need a good education to go to university
or find a job in the future.
