PHILIPPINES
• CASE 2: THE TWO FACES OF THE 1872 CAVITE MUTINY
• CASE 3: DR. JOSE P. RIZAL’S RETRACTION
Read it, pick a side, and explain why you support that side. Write 3-5 paragraphs to
share your opinion. Back up your explanation with factual information.

• CASE 3: DR. JOSE P. RIZAL’S RETRACTION

I choose the refraction of Dr. Jose Rizal because he is a prominent nationalist, writer
and a hero. Rizal refraction is a document the disavowal that critical writing to the
Catholic Church because his writing was opposed to the Catholic belief but according
to the retraction of Dr. Jose Rizal, he stated that he declares himself as a Catholic, he
confesses the writing that contrary to the character of the son of the Catholic Church. I
think to this part he proved that he deserves being Catholic.

The context of Rizal’s retraction is closely tied to the events during the execution and
according to the retraction that found in chapter 32 and 33 he was accused of
sedition, rebellion, conspiracy for his involvement in the Philippine Revolution against
to the Spanish rule and sentenced to death by the Spanish court. The Catholic
Church and Spanish they convince Rizal to retract his two greatest novel the “Noli Me
Tangere and “El Filibusterismo.

According to Father Balaguer, Rizal rectraction is received and accepted the shorter
retraction. He also added that Rizal rectracted because he wanted to marry Josephine
Bracken but how Rizal marriage without the reason of retraction. There was no
certificate found that show the legalizes of their marriage. In that case this retraction
still debated by a lot of historians because how Rizal created retraction before his
execution
Another part, the time of death of Rizal he was not buried without a coffin if he totally
have Rizal retraction he was buried properly because he was converted back to
Catholicism. His death is very crucial and why his death need to hide specially to his
relatives. So, for my conclusion, Rizal did not retract before his execution. I know,
there is some cases, articles, documents have supported but based from a real story
behind it. I can say, a lot of Catholic Church they created it to agree that Rizal have
retraction but behind them the real story will prove that Rizal did not retract.
