the study.

INTRODUCTION

The once colorful classroom was now bare, the walls

stripped of posters and decorations. The only thing left

was the tape marks where educational materials and artworks

used to be. Classroom Decoration is a technique used for a

long period of time to make the room welcoming and

interesting for the children. A well decorated classroom

can have a favorable effect on pupil’s emotional health in

addition to their academic performance by providing

consistency and comfort, which lowers stress and promotes

pupils’ mental and emotional well-being. (Paul and Sarah,

2022) Experts have found that a decorated classroom can

help in boosting pupils’ concentration levels and learning.

The layout of a classroom and effective design have

advantages such as good influence on the children, boost

learning progress, making learning more interesting and

learning in a fun way.

However, on August 3, 2023, Department of Education

uploaded on its website its Department Order 21 for

schools to keep classroom walls bare and to “take out

everything” on them, including traditional posters and

other visual teaching aids for classrooms to be clean,

orderly, functional, and free from distraction. According

to Department of Education, Classroom walls shall remain

bare and devoid of posters, decorations, or other posted

materials. Classrooms should not be used to stockpile

materials and should be clear of other unused items or

items for disposal. This order focuses on the enhancement

of the K-12 Basic Education Program, aiming to provide

quality education to all Filipino learners. Removing

classroom decorations can have an impact on children’s

attention and learning. Fisher (2019) Stated that children

were less likely to stay focused and had lower test scores

in a “decorated classroom” compared to the “sparse

classroom”.
According to a study made by Anna V. Fisher and

Howard Seltman of Carnegie Mellon University on May 21,

2014, it is not uncommon to find primary classroom and

even the higher ones decorated with lots of artworks,

colorful charts and posters, and other types of vibrant

pieces. But having too much visually stimulating items

inside a classroom might only 2serve to distract pupils and

they might end up learning less, not more. They

investigated children’s ability to focus and learn during

2
lessons and how it could be affected by displays found in

the classroom. They put 24 kindergartens in laboratory

2
classroom for six science lessons. Three lessons were done

in a heavily decorated room, and the other three were done

in a more unadorned room. Fisher (2014) found that while

the children learned in both types of classrooms, the

students showed a 55% accuracy on test questions in

sparsely decorated classroom. The findings published in

Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for

Psychological Science, also found the kids are more

distracted in visually busy classroom.

After implementing the DO No. 21 stating to “take out

everything” on every classroom, what we wanted to find out

now was the impact of this on the students. Does it really

have an impact in the learning and productivity of the

pupils?
THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

3
Fisher’s et al. (2014) concept of classroom

decorations provides the theoretical framework for this

study, which state that classroom decoration may be

detrimental to children’s learning. Specifically, children

were less likely to stay focused and attained lower scores

when experimental lessons were given in a “decorated

classroom” compared to a “sparse classroom”.

Fisher et al. (2014) concluded that “colorful visual

display may promote off-task behavior in young children,

resulting in reduced learning opportunities and

achievement. Is too much of a good thing bad? Fisher (2014)

suggest that extraneous visual stimuli complete for

children’s attention, causing distraction and impair

performance on cognitive task.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Ho1
This chapter presented foreign and local literatures

which were relevant to the present undertaking. Literature

cited enabled the researcher to have a better understanding

and a wider perspective of this study.

Foreign Literature and Studies

(Guney & AL, 2013) Classroom Decoration arrangements

communicate the nature of interactions and learning that is

expected to take place, whether individual, partner or in a

group. Design of the classroom can communicate clear

expectations for the students and, adequate resources and

materials can help manage classroom behavior. The physical

learning environment is one of the three main components of

classroom learning environment: the social, physical, and

temporal environments.

(Iris Center, 2015). All three components are

essential for quality education. These elements of the

learning environment are interconnected and form a holistic

enabling condition for student learning (UNESCO,2015). The

physical learning environment includes the spaces,

furnishing, decorations, and materials in the classroom

(Iris Center, 2015) suggested “movement, comfort,

competence and control” as the four core considerations

when designing spaces for young children. Moreover, the

10 is a medium for motivation,

physical learning environment

encouragement, and inspiration.

Fisher et al. (2014) Decorations in the classroom have

been found to impact student’s focus in class. Several

studies have shown that the color of classroom walls can

affect attention levels and stress levels of students.

Visual displays on classroom walls have also been found to

have a significant impact on attention and learning,

particularly for children with autism spectrum disorder

(ASD). Additionally, the physical design of the classroom,

including factors such as lighting, color, and space, can

influence student’s learning outcomes and teacher’s

efficacy. The naturalness, individuality, and stimulation

(SIN) conceptual model has been used to study the sensory

impacts experienced by students in the classroom, with

naturalness accounting for a significant portion of the

impact on learning. Overall, the research suggests that the

decorations in the classroom can play a role in student’s

focus and learning. Fisher et al. (2014) found that

children in a “decorated classroom” were less likely to

stay focused and had lower test scores compared to children

in a “sparse classroom”. Additionally, Godwin and fisher

(2012) found that children exhibited habituation to the

decorated environment over time, suggesting that the impact

of decorations on attention may be transient. Overall,

while decorations may initially distract students,

habituation, and the relevance of the decorations to the

learning materials should be considered in understanding

their long-term effects on focus.

Fisher et al. (2014) cites another one of their

studies in which children were given lessons in a decorated

classroom for 2 weeks and when compared to behavior in the

sparse classroom, children were distracted for a greater

amount of time in the decorated classroom on both week 1

and 2 (Godwin and Fisher 2012). Fisher (2014) did not

acknowledge, however, that the proportion of time that

children spent attending to the decorated environment

decreased significantly between weeks 1 and 2; that is,

children exhibited habituation to the environment. If this

is the case, classroom decorations may only have transient

impact on children’s attention.

Fisher et al. (2014) also stated that it is also

important to consider the role of novelty in these

findings. Fisher et al. (2014) argue that it may have been

the novelty of the decorations, rather than their

irrelevance, that detracted children’s attention.

Additionally, other studies suggest that classroom

decorations can have long-term benefits, such as improving

self-esteem, enhancing memory, and promoting peer

interaction (Maxwell & Chmielewski, 2008; Nor et al.).

Therefore, the effects of removing classroom decorations on

students learning may depend on factors such as level of

distraction, the relevance of the decorations, and the

12
overall classroom environment.

(Andrew Watson, 2023) For the most part, research

suggest that classroom decorations can overwhelm student’s

limited cognitive resources, working memory, and attention.

It may seem painful to admit that old habits (decorating

the classroom) might not have been wise; but now we know

better we can do better. When we think about each bit of

classroom decoration, the question we should ask is not

“why should we take it down?” but “am I sure I need to put

it up?”. No doubt we can find ways to make classrooms

welcoming and comfortable, and scholarly without

overwhelming our student’s cognitive abilities.

(Godwin, 2014) stated that they are also interested in

finding out if the classroom decoration were removed,

whether the children’s attention would shift to another

distraction, such as talking to their peers, and if the

total amount of time they were distracted would remain the

same. The researchers (Fisher & Godwin, 2014) hope that

these findings lead to further studies into developing

guidelines to help teachers optimally design classrooms.

(Godwin, 2014) wondered if students would get used to the

highly decorated classrooms. So, they studied

“habituation”, did students habituate to the highly

decorated classrooms?

In the first half of their study, (Godwin, 2014)

13
worked with kindergarten. Students spent five classes

studying science topics in plainly decorated classrooms.

Then they spent ten classes studying science topic in

highly decorated classroom. And based in their study

(Godwin, 2014) The students were less distracted than they

initially were in the decorated classroom. But they were

still more distracted in a highly decorated classroom than

in the sparsely decorated classroom. And even after ten

classes, students hadn’t fully habituated.

Bonwell and Eison (1991) defined active learning as

any learning strategy that involves “students doing things

and thinking about the things they are doing” (p. 2).

Characteristics of active learning strategies include

students are involved in more than listening, are

encouraged to share thoughts and values, and are asked to

engage in higher order thinking such as analysis and

synthesis rather than memorization (Bonwell & Eison).

Instructional strategies that promote active learning

include small group discussion, peer questioning,

cooperative learning, problem-based learning, simulations,

journal writing, and case-study teaching, among others

(Barkley, 2010; Prince, 2004). Edgerton (1997) refers to

active learning strategies as “pedagogies of engagement”

(p. 36); practices that encourage greater understanding and

transfer of knowledge.
Because classroom design is a
14
significant factor that can either hinder or promote this

engagement, this study examined the relationship of

classroom design and engagement. (Rands, 2017)

Local Literature and Studies

(GMA Integrated News, 2023) The Department of

Education stressed that no school would be exempted from

the policy mandating posters and decorations be taken down

on classroom walls and other facilities. DepEd deputy

spokesperson Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas, however,

said that they would not give a deadline for schools to

comply with the order but pointed out that it must be

soonest. And that it is applicable to all grade levels –

Kinder to Grade 12. The DepEd also stated that students

would be able to focus on their lessons if there are less

distractions like posters and decorations on classroom

wall.

(James Cruz, August 2023) Stated that DepEd memo

outlines that classroom must maintain cleanliness, keeping

walls from unnecessary artwork, decorations, tarpaulin, and

posters always. The memo also reiterated a 2010 order that

prohibits oversized signages with commercial

advertisements, words of sponsorship, and endorsements or

announcement in schools. However, some educators expressed

concern about this new directive and its effect on students

learning environment. (Bahrammi-Hessari, 2023) stated that

15 being structured in such a
without the learning environment

way that it has appropriate materials that will encourage

children to learn, there’s something missing in the

teaching and learning process. She also stated that it is

not advisable for them to get bored due to an overly

monotonous classroom environment. However, having too many

distractions is also not appropriate. (Bahrammi-Hessari,

2023) appealed to the education department to trust

teachers when it comes to what kind of environment helps

their students learn better. Meanwhile DepeD spokesperson

Michael Poa stated that if teachers have lessons that

require visual aid, they can do that during the time of

their lessons to make sure that classrooms are ready for

the next class. They also clarify that this year,

everything must be removed from the wall because most often

than not, the decorations used last year are still there

and that it distracts the learners.

(APS, 2014) Maps, number lines, shapes, artwork, and

other materials tend to cover elementary classroom walls.

However, too much of a good thing may end up disrupting

attention and learning in young children. They found that

children in highly decorated classrooms were more

distracted, spent more time off-task and demonstrated

smaller learning gains than when the decorations were

removed. Young children spend a lot of time usually the

whole day in the same

classroom and find out that
16
classroom’s visual environment can affect how much children

learn. Furthermore, additional research is needed to know

what effect the classroom visual environment has on

children’s attention and learning. Researchers (Fisher,

2014) suggest that instead of removing all decorations,

teachers should consider whether some of their visual

displays may be distracting to young children. For the

study, 24 students were placed in laboratory classrooms for

six introductory science lessons on topics they were

unfamiliar with. Three lessons were taught in a heavily

decorated classroom, and three lessons were given in a

sparse classroom. The result showed that while children

learned in both classroom types, they learned more when the

room was not heavily decorated. Specifically, children’s

accuracy on the test questions was higher in the sparse

classroom than in the decorated classroom.
