BAG TECHNIQUE CHECKLIST

1. Explain procedure to the client.
2. Take the paper lining from the top of
the bag. Open the paper lining, clean
side out (folded part touching the
table), and place on the table or any
flat surface.
3. Place the bag on the upper left hand
corner of the paper lining. Put the
bag’s handles or straps beneath the
bag.
4. Ask for a basin of water and glass of
water if faucet is not available. Place
these outside the work area.
5. Open the bag, take out the linen/
plastic lining and spread over the
work area with the clean side out
(folded part out).
6. Take out the hand towel, soap dish
and apron. Place them at one corner
of the work area (within the confines
of the linen/ plastic lining).
7. Do handwashing. Wipe dry with the
towel. Leave the plastic wrappers of
the towel in a soap dish in the bag.
8. Put on the apron right side out and
wrong side with crease touching the
body, sliding the head into the neck
strap. Neatly tie the straps at the
back.
9. Put out things most needed for the
specific case (e.g. thermometer,
kidney basin, cotton balls, waste
paper bag) and place at one corner of
the work area.
10. Get the waste paper bag and place
this outside the work area.
11. Close the bag before starting to
perform any procedure.
12. Proceed to specific nursing care or
treatment.
13. After completing the nursing care or
treatment, clean and alcoholize the
things used including plastic lining.
Disinfect using cotton balls with
alcohol.
14. Do handwashing again.
15. Open the bag and put back all the
articles inside in their proper places.
16. Remove the apron, folding away from
the body with the soiled side folded
inwards and the clean side out. Place
it in the bag.
17. Dispose of the waste bag. Get the
bag from the table, fold the paper
lining and insert/place in between the
flaps of the bag. Close the bag.
18. Make post visit conference on
matters relevant to health care, taking
anecdotal notes preparatory to final
reporting.
19. Make appointment for the next visit
(either home or clinic), taking note of
date, time and purpose.
