ADVOCATING ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION THROUGH
PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT
Hello dear learners, are you ready to learn another lesson today? Do you love
your environment? I know you do so let’s help promote its protection. What are you
waiting for? START LEARNING NOW!
W What I Need to Know
This module contains the lesson in Health which helps you to advocate
environmental protection through proper waste management.
After completing this module, you are expected to:
advocate environmental protection through proper waste management
What’s New
Increasing population and industrialization would mean more wastes in the
environment. More wastes would also mean more diseases. But then, on the brighter
side, people must be encouraged and united to maintain cleanliness to make our world
safe for us to live.
In our barangay, we have our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). It is a place
where waste/garbage is taken to be sorted before they are sent off to be recycled. This
project has been advocated by the government to protect our environment to further
destruction.

Materials Recovery
Facility

facility
The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is divided into three groups;
Biodegrable (Malata), Non-biodegradable (Dili Malata) and Recyclable (Magamit
pa).
7
Biodegradable (Malata) are those that could be broken down or decomposed to
smaller products over time. These include such as fruit peelings, dried leaves, grass
clippings and food leftovers.

On the other hand, Non-biodegradable (Dili Malata) are those that won’t
decompose even for years. Since they cannot be broken down or decomposed, they
are often called as pollutants. Examples of these are syringes, used diapers and
napkins, surgical facemasks, batteries, spray cans, damaged appliances/gadget and
etc.

Lastly, those biodegradable wastes and non-biodegradable wastes that could be
recycled or could be turned into a new product are placed in the Recyclable (Magamit
pa). These include plastic bottles, tires, bottles, plastic straws, plastic bag, cardboards,
newspapers, and papers.

What happens if you don’t segregate waste?
If we don’t segregate wastes, it will be dangerous to our surroundings. This may
cause different types of pollution. Let’s not wait for that to happen. Even at an early
age, you can already protect our environment by practicing proper waste
management. We still have time to save our Mother Earth. We can be responsible
stewards of our environment.
What can you do to help protect your environment?
Change starts within us. If you practice proper waste management at home
without someone reminding you to do so, you will eventually adopt the system and
become used to it. You may want others to follow the same too. You can be the one
to lead the younger ones and peers or even adults who are having a hard time to
properly dispose their garbage. Advocate clean-up drive and tree planting in your
community. Doing good deeds can become contagious. Let’s spread love and
positivity towards healthier environment.

What is It
Directions: Inside the box are different wastes that you usually throw in your
garbage bin. Categorize the following wastes into BIODEGRADABLE, NON-
BIODEGRADABLE or RECYCLABLE as you throw them in your Materials
Recovery Facility (MRF). Write your answers under its proper classification. (See
Activity 1 page 9 in the Appendices.)
What’s More
A. Directions: Create a poster in advocating environmental protection through
proper waste management. Draw inside the box. Be creative in coloring your
work. The rubric will serve as basis for your score. (Answer Activity 2.1 page
10 in the Appendices.)

What I Have Learned
Answer the following briefly and concisely. (Answer Activity 3 page 13 in
the appendices.)
1. How can you influence others to manage their waste properly?
2. As a Grade 6 pupil, what can you do to help protect your environment ?
10
Assessment
Advocating environmental protection through proper waste
management
Some of the households in your neighbourhood have only one waste bin while
others have two that separate the biodegradable from non-biodegradable. When the
garbage team comes to collect it, they mix both wastes. In school, trash containers
are tightly sealed and labelled, but some make mistakes in identifying and
segregating.
You are an advocate of environmental protection through proper waste
management. Create an information campaign for your community about proper
waste management so they will be encouraged to take an action. Do it inside the box
given. Use the rubric to assess your work. (Answer Activity 4 page 13-14 in the
Appendices.)
