Receive and Integrate

Cartoon is a form of visual communication that became popular with the

invention of the modern newspaper and motion picture in 20th Century. Modern
cartoons were first used to attract people to read newspapers and watch
movies.

Cartoon is as old as man. Just take look at the walls of prehistoric cave dwellers.
The earliest example of the cartoon can be found in these places. Although talking
animals or human figures were not found on these caves, these places contain
something unique to all cartooning—simplification.

Cartoonists have made significant impact on how visual communication is done at

present. They use a variety of effects—funny and amusing, sharp and biting, or subtle and
slippery—for various types of cartoons. Three of the most popular cartoons in the field are
editorial cartoons, comic strips, and caricatures.
• An editorial cartoon is a cartoon found in the editor’s page of newspapers. It is one-panel
or stand-alone comic strip in which the main intent is to present an opinion about the
current event.
• Comic strip is a series of little drawings arranged box-by-box, some or all of which may
contain dialogue. It is a type of cartoon that has become familiar and popular to many
people.
• Some cartoons often model their characters from famous people, such as politicians or
movie stars. They are often drawn in a distorted manner which exaggerates certain things 3
about them. This type of drawing is called caricature.
BASICS OF CARTOON CHARACTER DRAWING
Physical Features- Some general points about human the figure would be useful
but not necessary. In the worlds of cartoon-making, traditional practices or rules
on proportion are not followed or ignored.
• Facial Character-Like the human face, the cartoonish face provides clues
about the identity, personality, and mood of the cartoonist. It tells us a
great deal about its owner – whether they are male or female, old or
young, tall or short, pretty or not so pretty, fat or thin, and others. The face
alone says it all.
• Facial Expression- The selling point of a cartoon is often made through
facial expressions. The cartoonists have to exaggerate the depiction of the
cartoon’s facial expression to make the readers understand the inner
feelings that goes with the cartoons.
• Hands- Hands are very expressive of character. Hands can convey feelings
of enjoyment, anger, or fright. Presenting hands in cartoons can vary a lot.
Sometimes they bear little relationship to the hands we know in real life.
Feet- Feet, including footwear, are an important feature of cartoon
characterization. The distortions that many cartoonists make are
often funny.

Here are 5 interesting facts about comic books:

1. The largest comic book market in the world is in Japan. Nearly 2 billion Japanese comic
books (called manga) are sold every year.
2. The first comic book in the United States was “The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck,”
which was sold as a hardcover in 1842.
3. The first Superman comic was in 1938, which ushered in what is called the Golden Age
of Comic Books with the superhero character. Historians believe these characters helped
calm people who were worried about the threat of war during and after WWII.
4. Graphic novels were introduced in the 1960s, and are popular with kids and adults
today. Although people haven’t always had much respect for comics or graphic novels,
more people are appreciating them as their own art form. One graphic novel for adults,
“Maus,” even won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992.
5. Some comics and graphic novels for kids today include “Narwhal and Jelly” by Ben
Clanton, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series by Gene Luen Yang and “Dog Man” series by
Dav Pilkey. There are many more to check out at your library. 4
