INTEGRATION WITH NATURE

The architectural design of amenities in NID Ahmedabad emphasizes
integration with the natural landscape. The buildings are strategically
positioned to maximize natural light and ventilation, promoting a
sustainable and eco-friendly environment.

MODERN AESTHETICS
The amenities' architecture showcases a contemporary and sleek design,
incorporating clean lines and innovative use of materials. The aesthetic
appeal of the spaces enhances the overall experience for users.

FUNCTIONAL SPACES

Each amenity is carefully designed to optimize functionality and

usability. The spaces are organized to support the activities they house,
fostering efficiency and productivity.
Structure
The earlier establishment of the institute within the
premises of the cultural center, Sanskar Kendra, could
have influenced the designing of NID.
The plan of NID resembled the Sanskar Kendra in
certain aspects like, using structural grid of columns
and freeing the ground for public activities.
Other similarities between the two built-forms were the
use of precise geometry evolved on the basis of
module, the idiom of exposed materials brick with
horizontal concrete bands, and the expression of the
courtyard.
But the pristine box created by Corbusier in Sanskar
Kendra has been successfully broken with the roofs of
different levels creating a dynamic composition.
Structure
A construction featuring exposed bricks draws
attention, with a structural grid formation.
The basic grid dimension is 6.15m x 6.15m,
allowing structural precision and flexibility.
External cladding comprises prefabricated
heat-resistant glass in metal frames from
workshops and rosewood frame studios.
Another interesting juxtaposition is the location
of an old monument, used as backdrop for
amphitheatre, in close vicinity to the main
building. The existence of old and the new,
creates dynamic compositional balance.

Material
Precast RCC shells are designed to carry machine loads of
1000kg/sq. meter(including impact).

The first few shells were of reinforced cement concrete,

but the next step was to develop them of reinforced brick
with an RCC band at the edges.

In the third stage, the entire shell was made of reinforced

brick. the final stage of the development was the design
of a brick shell without any reinforcement at all.
Flooring consists of square of two module length, cast in
patent stone [situ cement].

The use of brick in roof shells as in floor slabs was suggested

on account of the prevailing shortage of cement in the
country. Incidentally,it also more preferable than concrete.

The external cladding is pre-fabricated and consists of heat

- resisting glass in metal frames in the workshops and in
rose-wood frames in the studio.
