III. LEARNING DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
TASK
Activity 1: What Am I?
ELICIT (5mins) Direction: Answer the table below by naming each
material whether it is homogeneous or
heterogeneous mixture.
Homogeneous or
Material
Heterogeneous?
1. Saltwater
2. Halo-halo
3. Gelatin
4. Glass of Milk
5. Brewed Coffee
QUESTION:
ENGAGE What do you prefer to drink in the morning, Milk or Coffee?
(5mins)
Activity 2: Can You Name Solutions at Home?
Direction: List down some common solutions found at home or
in stores and do the activity below.
Products or Solutions Found Characteristics
at home or in stores

Guide Questions:
1. Describe the observable characteristics of listed solutions
2. As you observe each product was described in terms of color
and appearance, odor, feel, taste, and number of phases
3. Which of these products are solutions?

EXPLORE
(20 mins) Activity 3: What Are Some Properties of Solutions?

Objectives: When you finish this activity you should

be able to:
1. compare the evidence gathered with the
predictions you made; and
2. describe some properties of solutions
based on observations.

Materials Needed:
● 1 liter of water

● 7 cups

● 6 pieces spoon

● either of the following: cheesecloth (katsa), old white T-

shirt or filter paper
● 2 tablespoons of each of the following: sugar, salt,
mongo seeds, powdered juice, cooking oil, two different
types of vinegar (one which is clear and another which
appears cloudy)
● 12 clear bottles or cups or small beakers

● measuring spoons – 2 pieces each (½ tsp. and 1 tsp.)

● measuring cups – 2 pieces each (½cup and 1cup)

● 3 funnels or improvised funnel made from 500 mL
plastic bottle)
● Iron stand with iron ring or improvised stand if not
available
● 1 stirring rod or stick

● 1 flashlight
Procedure:
1. Predict which among the given samples will
dissolve in water. Write your predictions in
column 2 of Table 3.
2. Pour one cup of water in each cup.
3. Add ½ teaspoon of each of the seven samples. Stir
the mixture with a teaspoon to dissolve as much
of each sample as possible. Use a different
teaspoon for each cup.
Q1. Describe the mixture that resulted after mixing. Write your
answer in column 3.
Q2. How many phases do you observe? Write your answer and
observations in column 4.
Q3. Identify the solute in each of the mixtures. Write your
answers in the blank:

________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________
Q4. What is the solvent in each of the mixtures? ______________

4. Filter the mixture with filter paper using a setup similar to

Figure 1. You may use a katsa or old white T-shirt with the
improvised funnel from plastic bottle.

5. Place the liquid collected from each filtration in a small beaker

or clear transparent glass bottle. Shine enough light to the
liquid using a flashlight placed at the side of the beaker. The
room where you are working should be dark. Using a black
background may help you see the light across the liquid. If the
room is not dark, you can put the setup inside the cabinet in
your kitchen.

components (solute and solvent) by filtration? Write your
observations in column 5 of Table 1.

EXPLAIN Activity 4: Can you present your findings?
(10 mins) Direction: In this activity, each group will choose their
representative to present their findings or answer from
activity 3. They will be given time allotment per group.
Each group will be rate through rubric.

Guide Questions:
1. Which samples dissolved in a cup of water?
2. Which mixtures have uniform or the same in appearance?
3. Which samples cannot be separated by filtration? Why do you
think so?
4. Which mixtures are solutions? Why?

ELABORATE Activity 5: Can You Read Me?

(10 mins) Direction: Read the information below and answer the guide
questions that follow.

The substances that make up a

homogeneous solution are called components of
the solution. These components are called
solvent and a solute. What is solvent? What is
solute? Solvent it is a component of a solution
which dissolves the other component in itself. It
institutes the larger component of the solution.
For example, water is a solvent that dissolves
solid substance like sugar. Solute it is the
Guide Questions:
1. What are the components of a solution?
2. What components comes in smaller amount? In greater
amount?
3. How will you describe a solution?

Activity 6: Credit or Debit?

Direction: Write Credit if the statement is true and write Debit if
it is false.
1. A solution is a mixture of one phase only.
2. Solution composed of solute and solvent.
3. The solute can be separated from the solvent through
filtration.
4. Solution is a heterogeneous mixture.
5. A solution is often clear and transparent.

Valuing: What is the importance of solution in our lives?

Activity 7: How Much Do You know?

EVALUATE Direction: Read each item carefully. Write only the letter of the
(5 mins) correct answer for each question.
1. In a salt water solution, what substance is considered the
solvent?
A. Salt

C. Both are solvents
D. Neither substance is a solvent
2. What do you call the dissolved substance in a solution?
A. Solute
B. Mixture
C. Solvent
D. Concentrator
3. What type of mixture is a solution?
A. Heterogeneous
B. Homogeneous
C. Immiscible
D. none of these

4. The following are properties of solution, EXCEPT:

A. The components are so well mixed that all parts of the
solution appear the same.
B. The solute cannot be separated from the solvent through
filtration.
C. It is a mixture of two phases only.
D. A solution is often clear and transparent.
5. Which of the following describes a solution?
A. Its components are separable by filtration.
B. It has clear and transparent appearance.
C. Its solute cannot be dissolved in solvent.
D. It is a heterogeneous mixture.

EXTEND Activity 8: How Far Can You Give?
