CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY
A. Background
Discussion is an activity that almost everyone in this world does. They
discuss to discuss something that they certainly think is important. In this
activity, two or more people give their respective opinions to be known by
other parties and then the other parties respond or respond to what is
expressed, and vice versa.
As a student, of course you will not be separated from discussing
something together to solve. Moreover, the current curriculum prioritizes joint
discussions between students, only then can conclusions be drawn from the
results of these discussions.
B. Problem Formulation
Based on the background above, the formulation of the problem in this
paper is:
1. What is the definition of discussion text?
2. What is the purpose of the discussion text?
3. What are the types of discussion text?
4. What is the structure of a discussion text?
5. What are the characteristics of discussion text?
6. What is an example of a discussion text??
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
A. Definition of Discussion Text
Discussion text is a type of text that gives two opinions about something.
Of course, there are opinions that are aligned and there are also those that are
contradictory. When we discuss something, it is undeniable that our discussion
has various arguments/opinions. Likewise, this discussion text has two
different opinions; one, agree opinion and, two, disagree opinion. Therefore
we must have a broad view of a problem if we want to make a discussion text.
Discussion text can be defined as a text that contains a problematic
discourse. This problematic discourse is a discourse that has two camps
between the pros (supporters) and cons (opponents), between supporters of the
issue and opponents of the issue. The problems presented in the discussion
text will later be discussed based on these two points of view, the pros
(supporters) and cons (opponents). The communicative purpose of the
discussion text itself is to present a problem or issue that is reviewed from at
least two points of view, before arriving at a conclusion or recommendation.
From the two definitions above, it can be simply concluded that what is
called a discussion text is writing that reviews a problem (issue) accompanied
by arguments/opinions both for and against the issue and ends with the
author's conclusions or recommendations.
B. Purpose of Discussion Text
The purpose of the discussion is to seek agreement or understanding of
ideas or opinions. Discussions that involve several people are called group
discussions. In group discussions, a leader is needed who is called the
discussion leader. The task of the discussion chairperson is to open and close
the discussion, arouse members' interest in conveying ideas, mediate debating
members, and conclude the results of the discussion.
3
C. Types of Discussion Text
1. Seminar, is a special meeting that has technical and academic aims to
carry out a thorough study of a particular topic by solving a problem
that requires interaction between seminar participants who are assisted
by a professor or scholar.
2. Workshop, is a form of meeting attended by a certain group of invitees
to discuss a problem in an informal way and a relaxed atmosphere.
3. Symposium, is a series of short speeches in front of visitors with a
leader (moderator).
4. Panel discussion, is one form of discussion that has been planned on a
topic in front of the visitors. Panel discussion by 3–6 people who are
considered experts led by a moderator.
5. Congress, is a collection of people, especially for political purposes.
6. Muktamar, is a meeting of representatives of the organization to
negotiate or exchange opinions on a problem faced together
7. Workshop, is an event where several people gather to solve a particular
problem and find a solution.
D. Discussion Text Structure
The structure of the contents of the discussion text includes: issues,
arguments for and against, conclusions/conclusions. On an internet page it is
stated simply that the structure of the contents of the discussion text includes:
1. Issues/Problems
Issues (problems) in the discussion text contain problems that will be
discussed/discussed further. If you want to write a discussion text, it's a
good idea to choose a topic that is controversial so that later it will have a
lot of arguments, both supporting and opposing arguments. For example,
the topic of the problem:
"Students may not carry mobile phones so as not to interfere with
teaching and learning activities in class."
4
"National exams will continue to be carried out as an effort to
determine the quality of national education"
“Family planning to control excessive birth rates”
2. Supporting Arguments/Opinions (Supporting Points)
In this supportive opinion section, we are required to elaborate
further on the explanation of the problem we are discussing. If the issue
contains problems like in the example of the first issue above, then it must
explain in more detail about cellphones that can interfere with teaching
and learning activities in schools.
3. Arguments / Opinions Against / Contrasting (Contrasting Points)
In this section of opposing opinions, it would be nice for us to
provide opinions that are more different from those in support. If
cellphones are considered to have a negative effect on students, then in this
section we must provide opinions about the benefits of cellphones for
students. For example, by giving the argument that cellphones can make it
easier for students to find information on the internet about the subject
being discussed.
4. Conclusion/Suggestion
In this section, we try to take a middle ground regarding the issues
being discussed so that the conclusions we draw will no longer create new
problems. For example, in the case of the cellphone above, we can provide
suggestions/conclusions by writing that schools allow students to bring
cellphones as long as they are not activated when teaching and learning
activities are in progress.
E. Language features of Discussion Text
From several opinions actually one with another contains the same
meaning and complements each other. The conclusion is that the language
features of the discussion text are as follows:
1. The use of modality words, for example: must, will, want, maybe.
2. Use of action verbs, for example: cause, result.
5
3. Use of opposing conjunctions, for example: but, but, nevertheless,
however.
4. Use of lexical cohesion (words/terms related to the topic of the
discussion text) and grammatical cohesion. Lexical cohesion is
cohesiveness achieved through the choice of words/terms. Lexical
cohesion can be in the form of repeating words/terms several times
in one paragraph/discourse, using synonyms, antonyms, and
hyponyms in one paragraph/discourse.
F. Example of Discussion Text
The Impact of Watching Television for Teenagers
Issue
In this era of globalization, television broadcasts are unavoidable. By
watching television, we can get various kinds of information, including
entertainment. The question is are there any negative impacts arising from
watching television? Some people think that watching television has a positive
impact, but many people also think that watching television has a negative
impact.
Supporting Arguments
The positive impacts of watching television are as follows:
First, television has advantages in presenting news, television is
generally always up to date. This of course will make teenagers not miss
information and provide insight that is quite broad to teenagers quickly.
Second, if television presents programs related to education, this is of
course very useful for students. A student can benefit in the form of
educational information from the television program.
Third, another positive effect of television is that teenagers can refresh
their brains by watching various entertainment programs presented by
6
television stations. Starting from quiz shows, movies, soap operas, or other
entertainment.
Fourth, television shows often show influential figures, whether in the
world of education, business, entertainment or others. The characters shown
on television can trigger teenagers to emulate their success.
Arguments Against
Meanwhile, the negative impacts of watching television are as follows:
First, television makes teenagers forget the time. For students, addiction
to watching television is counterproductive to the task of a student whose duty
is to study.
Second, the many programs that are less educational on television can
affect the psyche of adolescents. Films that show scenes that are inappropriate
for teenagers to watch without censorship are very easy for teenagers to
imitate.
Third, television can increase the consumption power of teenagers.
Because television is an advertising medium that has a high influence on
consumers. Ads are displayed continuously throughout the day, teenagers to
buy products promoted by manufacturers.
Fourth, there are many television programs whose contents are not in
accordance with the norms of Indonesian society, including news that often
shows violence without being censored first. If such programs are watched by
teenagers who like to imitate, of course they can emulate them.
The knot
From some of these opinions it can be concluded that television has a
positive or negative impact. It depends on the television audience.
