Introduction
Lesson 1: Techniques and Performance Practices applied to Contemporary Arts
Contemporary art is the art of today, in most cases it is defined as art that has
been and continues to be created during our lifetime or it is being part of everyday
practices. It challenges the feelings and thoughts of the artists and can freely relate the
message to the audience. In other words, it is more on freely expressing of one’s art
with or without considering the traditional conventions of arts.In addition, contemporary
art can be found anywhere because it enable people to reflect and respond to the
modern or present social concerns and issues pertaining to themselves and to the world
(Dedal, 2017).
Contemporary art uses a wide variety of techniques. Thus, it is relevant to
deepen your understanding on how to use these techniques and translate them into
useful artworks. The challenge now is how we are going to embrace the different arts
which reflect the Philippine cultures in various regions in order to promote and preserve
it. According to Perez (2016) contemporary art practices are expressed in different
ways, by an individual or by a collaboration of several artists. Perhaps one collaborative
art that is very common to every region is festival. Now, let us learn how these
techniques and practices can be very useful in transforming festivals.
Let’s get started. Please do your best to
accomplish the succeeding activities. It will only
take you couple of minutes.

PHILIPPINE FESTIVALS
Festivals are delightful events for the Filipinos – we are all feast-loving
people. We love to celebrate almost every aspect of our existence–from birth to
death. We have birthday celebrations, wakes for the dead, marriage feasts, and
others.
In almost every barangay, sitioor district, there is a fiesta in honor for a
particular patron saint. There are municipalities with many fiesta celebrations all
year round. For example, the Turumba Festival in Pakil is the longest religious
festival in the country. In Lucban, Pahiyas is in honor of their patron saint, San
Isidro Labrador.
8
In some municipalities of Quezon, the festival features different products and
celebrated differently from each other although the theme is the same. In Cebu,
Sinulog is in honor of Senior Sto. Niño which is also celebrated
inPistangItimnaNazarenoin Quiapo.
Other festivals are geared towards cultural preservation and tourism such
as the Panagbenga in Baguio City, Ati-atihan in Aklan, Dinagyang in Ilo-ilo,
Kadayawan in Davao, Maskara in Bacolod, and Moriones in Marinduque. It is only
in the Philippines that every municipality celebrates its own festival annua lly in
addition to provincial-wide and regional-wide festivals organized by the
Department of Tourism.
Each festival is unique wherein different art techniques are applied.
Flowers and ornamentals dominate the Panagbenga, Kiping in the Pahiyas,
colors and paints in Maskara, Ati-atihan, and Sinulog, and local products in other
festivals. Several festivals are profit-oriented; others are religious in spirit; while
others are festivals for a cause. No matter what type of festival is celebrated. The
important element is that the community is united in these festivals.
This time, I want you to organize your thoughts and
describethe use of contemporary arts in enriching
festivals.

• It is known that Philippines have various festivals which reflect history, culture,
religion and arts due to the influence brought by the Spaniards. These various
activities have shaped the individual perspectives in showing oneself in our
present times.
• There are different techniques and practices applied in contemporary arts. These
techniques are painting, printing, air brushing, carving, paper mache and even
tattooing. These techniques are applied in the making of the costumes and props
