Writing a News Report Using the Given Facts

Background Information:

A News Report explains a real-life event, and it presents a lot of information but
does not use a lot of words.

Any idea, issue or event could only be newsworthy if it affects a significant number of
readers or listeners. A news could only become one if it catches the interest of the reader
or listener. As Charles Anderson Dana, editor of the New York Sun said, “If a dog bites a
man, that is not a news; but if a man bites a dog, then that is a news.” From this, we can
conclude that the bottom line for news writing is interest.

News values

News values are general guidelines or criteria which determine how much
importance a media outlet gives a news story. They explain why a story interests its
audience; and how editors and other journalists decide that one piece of information is
news while another is not.

Media outlets include newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the Internet.
News values are also called news criteria or news factors.

The Six News Values are:

1. Timeliness- Recent events have a higher news value than less recent ones.

2. Proximity- Stories taking place in one’s hometown or community are more

newsworthy than those taking place far away.

3. Prominence- Famous people and those in the public eye have a higher news
value than ordinary citizens.

4. Uniqueness/oddity- A story with a bizarre twist or strange occurrences. “Man

bites dog” instead of “dog bites man.”

5. Impact- Stories that impact a large number of people may be more newsworthy
than those impacting a smaller number of people.

6. Conflict- “If it bleeds, it leads.” Stories with conflict, whether it’s actual violence or
not, are more interesting.

Most Important Characteristics of News

1. Accurate. It refers to the correctness of statements, names, figures and other

information.
2. Objective. The news does not take side and is fair.
3. Factual. It consists of actual persons and events with nothing invented.

1
4. Balance. It gives proper emphasis on each fact in relation to other fact; gives
attention to both sides in a controversial issue.
5. Concise. It is short enough to contain the most important facts.
6. Timely. It refers to the freshness of the event.

Basic Structure of News

For a news report, the most important information comes first. This style of writing is
called ‘The Inverted Pyramid’. It refers to ‘front loading’ of a news report article so that a
reader receives the most important information first, or on top. The report then proceeds
with explanatory and supporting details in the order of most to least important.

Most Important
Introduction captures the main points.

Next most Important

Body lists additional facts in
order of importance

Least Important
Tail lists minor
points.

Parts of a News Report

▪ Headline - is the title of the news report. The heading should be catchy and should
grab the reader’s attention.

▪ Lead Paragraph - informs the reader of the most important aspects of the story as
soon as possible. The Lead Paragraph is often the only part of the story that people
read. Use the 5W’s rule:

• Who (is involved)

• What (took place)
• When (did it take place)
• Where (did it take place)
• Why (did it happen)
• How (did it happen) – only include this if there is space

When writing a lead, it is helpful to use the “tell a friend” strategy. Imagine you had to
sum up to a friend, in one sentence, what your story is about. How would you sum
up quickly what happened?

Tips to have a good Lead!

• Keep it short, one sentence only

• If you have something in the lead, make sure you will be talking about
it in the body of the article.
• Make it interesting, but keep it short and stick to the 5W's and H.

2
▪ The Body of the News Report - gives more details and provides more information
about the why and how of the story.

Things to remember when writing the Body:

• You should answer the 5 W’s and H right away in your body. Discuss
them in more detail using quotes.
✓ You need to include things people actually said.
✓ Quotations add accuracy to the story.
• The body paragraphs should be short (just 2-3 sentences long).
• The information reported has just happened so do NOT explain the history
of events.
• The report should be written in the third person. (Use pronouns like he,
she, it, they, etc.)

▪ The Tail - contains the less important information which is often omitted by the
newspaper editor if there is not enough space left in the newspaper.

Hints:
• Your news report should be easy to understand.
• Try to be fair – include both sides of the story and don’t let your own opinion
get in the way of reporting the ‘facts’.

Facts are very important in a news story. It is one of the four elements of the story.
We can write a news story using the given facts.
Example of a News Report:
