DANCE STEPS
AND
POSITION
Do you love to dance? Are you familiar with basic steps in dancing? Can you
dance the basic position? Did you join some folk dances?
Dance is the ideal means of self- expresion. It is also hel the development of self
confidence. It serves as a form of recreation and for athoes, it is an art form.
Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within
a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing
energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself.

Dance is a powerful impulse, but the art of dance is that impulse channeled by
skillful performers into something that becomes intensely expressive and that may
delight spectators who feel no wish to dance themselves.
In this module we learn about different dance steps and dance position. We will
also demonstrate each dance steps and dance position.

Objectives

Key Terms

Dance- to move one’s body rhythmically usually to music.


Steps- one of the series structures consisting of riser and a tread.
Movement- the change of place or position and posture.

DANCE STEPS AND POSITION


All dances use locomotor skills like walking, running, and jumping or combination of
skills like waltz, two-step, or skip.

Dance steps
1. Walk- a walk varies from a basic heal-toe walking action to a shuffling movement.
The accent is on the first beat.
2. Run- A run varies from a slow heel-toe run to a fast and running action from toe to
the opposite toe.
3. Hop- The hop is a basic springing action from the ball of one foot to the ball of the
same foot.
4. Leap- A leap is a basic springing action from the ball of one foot to a landing on
the ball of the opposite foot that is bent on each landing.
5. Skip- a skip is a step and a short hop on the same foot, shifting to a step and hop
on the opposite foot.
6. Slide- A slide and a gallop are basically the same. A slide is performed in a
sideward direction while a gallop is performed in a forward direction. A slide is a
step on one foot and a closing action of the opposite foot.
Combination of steps

The following steps are combinations of one or more locomotor steps;


1. Schottische - This step is a combination of three walking steps followed by a hop,
after the third measure, it may include a step hop, step hop, and hop, hold turn or
swing the free leg on the fourth count.
2. Waltz Step- This step is a graceful step forward on L foot (ct.1), a step forward and
sideward on R foot (ct.2), and a closing action of the L foot and shifting of weight
to this foot (ct. 3)
3. Polka Series
Plain Polka Step R (L) foot forward (ct.1), step L(R) close
2/4 (1M) to R ( L ) (ct. and) step R (L) forward (ct.2),
pause (ct. and)
Hop Polka Hop on L (R ) foot and step R( L) foot forward
2/4 (1M) (ct.1) step L ( R) close to R (L) (ct. and), step R
(L) foot forward (ct.2), paused (ct. and)
Slide Polka Slide and step R(L) foot forward (ct. 1), L (R )
2/4 (1M) to R ( L) to R ( L) to L (R ) ( no weight ) (ct.
and), slide and step L (R ) ( no weight ) (ct.
and), take one plain polka forward beginning
with the R ( L ) foot (ct. 1 and 2 and)
Heel and Toe Polka Place R ( L )heel in front ( cts. 1 and ), touch

5. Sway Balance Series
Step R (L) foot obliquely forward right (L) (Cts, 1, 2) step L (R) across in front of R (L)
(ct. 3), step R (L) obliquely backward R (L), (ct. l), point L (Q) in front (Cts 2, 3), arms
in 4th position, R (L) aim high. Do a kumintang while pointing with the L (R) foot on
(Cts, 1, 2, 3),
Sway balance with a brush 3/4 (2 M)

Repeat the same movements as in sway balance with a point (Cts, 1, 2, 3). Step R
(L) obliquely backward R (L) (ct. 1), close L (R) to R (L) obliquely backward R (L) (ct.
1), close L (R) to R (L) in front (Cts. 2, 3). Same arm movements,

Sway balance with a waltz 3/ 4 (2 M)


Repeat same movements. Take one waltz step obliquely backward R (L) Cts. 1, 2,
3). Same arm movements.
Sway balance with a hop 3/4 4 (2 M)
Repeat beginning movements. Step L (R) obliquely R (L) (ct. 1), raise L (R) across the
R (L) in front (ct. 2), hop on R (L) (ct. 3), Same arm movements,
Sway balance with a raise 3/4 (2 M)
Repeat beginning movements, Step R (L) obliquely backward R (L) (ct. 1) raise L (R)
knee in front (Cts. 2, 3). Bend body slightly forward on (ct. 1), raise to erect position
on (Cts. 2, 3), open arms sideward at shoulder level on the first three counts (Cts. 1,
2, 3), bend forearms forward and bring hands close to chest on the next three
counts (Cts. 1, 2, 3), or arms in 4th position R (L) arm high.

The positions described below are usually used in dances. Study and demonstrate
these positions.
