2. identify distinct characteristics of arts during the Renaissance and Baroque
periods (A9EL-lla-3);
3. identify representative artists from Renaissance and Baroque periods (A9PL-
llh-1);
4. explain the influence of iconic artists belonging to the Renaissance and the
Baroque periods (A9PR-llc-e-3);
5. evaluate works of art in terms of artistic concept and ideas using criteria from
the Renaissance and the Baroque Periods (A9PR-llf-5); and
6. show the influences of the Renaissance and Baroque periods on the Philippine
art form (A9EL-llb-1).

What’s New

What is It
Arts of the Renaissance period covers art works produced during the
14th, 15th and 16th centuries in Europe. The word Renaissance comes from
the word “renaitre,” which means, “rebirth, revival and rediscovery.” It
pertains to arts, particularly in Italy, such as sculptures, paintings, music,
architecture, and literature. Renaissance art was characterized by accurate
anatomy, scientific perspective, deeper language. Painter depicted real-life
figures. Sculptures were naturalistic portraits of human beings and
architecture was of symmetry and balance.

FAMOUS RENAISSANCE ARTSWORKS AND ARTISTS
His famous works were “The Last Supper,” which is the most
reproduced religious painting of all time and “Mona Lisa,” the most famous
and parodied portrait. His other works were “The Vitruvian Mar,” “The
Adoration of Magi,” and the “Virgin of Rocks.”

Baroque Period (1600-1800)
The term Baroque was derived from the Portuguese word “barocco”
which means “irregular shaped pearl or stone.” It describes a fairly complex
idiom and focuses on painting, sculpture, as well as architecture. This
developed in Europe around 1600’s. This type of art form was highly-
encouraged by the Catholic Church to propagate its dogma.
