CRITERIA FOR RECOGNIZING HEROES

After colonialism, there were some individuals who were considered as

a hero. Due to this concept, a hero became a social construct and
recognizing them has always been subjective. Hence, the National Historical
Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) released some criteria for recognizing
a hero to bridge the gap, through their Project Saysay. The criteria are as
follows:
1. The extent of person’s sacrifice for the welfare of the country (Teodoro A.
Agoncillo 1965);
- A person must extend its eagerness and wholeheartedly sacrifice to
sustain the needs of the citizens of his beloved country. It specifies that this
individual must exceed its willingness to sacrifice to provide aid to individuals
who cannot support themselves and help those who are in greatest need.
2. the motive and methods employed in the attainment of the ideal (welfare
of the country) (Teodoro A. Agoncillo 1965);
- An individual must be motivated while performing and attaining the
idea of providing help and aid to the needy (welfare of the country). This
concludes that the person must attain its eagerness to help and pursue the
idea of being able to assist those who are in greatest need without any
hesitation.
3. the moral character of the person concerned (Teodoro A. Agoncillo 1965);

- One of the major things that should be considered is the morality of
the person before considering it as a hero. The person must attain ethical
behavior, values, virtues, and morality that makes him/her a better individual
that can be a role model to everyone.
4. the influence of the person concerned on his/her age and or the

succeeding age (Teodoro A. Agoncillo 1965);
- One of the qualities that must be considered was the influence of the
individual no matter their age, -- being a youth or old. However, this includes
that this individual must have a good influence on everyone no matter their

age since his contribution must be accessible to everyone, that there will be
no special effects on specific ages. This only concludes that the person must
influence not only those who are in same age as them but also those who are
not, and in the future, even if they’ll get old, they must still influence the
youth by their works.
5. those who have a concept of nation and thereafter aspire and struggle for
the nation’s freedom (Onofre D. Corpuz 1993);
- Aspiring hero must be aware on their country and own nation. They
must have knowledge and wisdom on what is going through within their
state, that they must not be ignorant and have brave and firm soul that can
make them fight for their freedom. They should be willing to struggle just to
achieve the freedom they wanted for their country.
6. those who define and contribute to a system of life of freedom and order
for a nation (Onofre D. Corpuz 1993);
- Those individuals who know how to show other citizens the life of
having own freedom in the country they are living in. Those who contribute
for country and citizens’ life freedom and order for a better nation they will
live, and even the future generation.
7. those who contribute to the quality of life and destiny of a nation (Onofre
D. Corpuz 1993);
- Those who know how to value life and make it worth living within the
nation. Those who have the capabilities to show the quality of life people
may have if they have a better nation. Those who are not self-centered but
always think of others, their fellowmen and their whole nation, that it must
come first before themselves.
8. a part of the people’s expression (Alfredo Lagmay 1995);

- An individual who are accepted by the society and can attain people’s
admiration and expression. Those individuals who can be a part of people’s
life without causing harm to them, those who will surely imprint something
on someone’s life that will never be forgotten, because they are accepted
and became part of them.

9. person who thinks of the future, especially the future generations (Alfredo
Lagmay 1995);
- A person who do not only focus and rely on the past and the present,
but those who thinks much more about the future and the future
generations. Those who are not greedy and selfish but optimistic and have
an overhead seeing of the future. Those who know which to decide because
they already think of the consequences of their actions that might affect the
future generation.
10. the choice of a hero involves not only the recounting of an episode or
events in history, but of the entire process that made this particular person a
hero (Alfredo Lagmay 1995);
- It concludes that the person must not only contribute on past events
in the history, but on the entire process that made them qualified as a hero.
Those particular individuals that do not just fought back just on what they
can do but those who exceeded their capabilities just to show their
admiration and love to their country. Counting of wars you’ve been isn’t the
basis here, but how you act and exerted effort just to save your fellowmen
and your whole nation.
