Questions
1. Create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the three brilliant writings of
Jose Rizal, which are living proofs that “the pen is mightier than the sword”.
SOBRE LA INDOLENCIA DE LOS FILIPINOS
This is claimed to be Rizal's longest article, which was published in La
Solidaridad in five episodes from July 15 to September 15, 1890. The essay
was regarded as a rebuttal to Spaniards who claimed that Filipinos are lethargic or
indolently nature. The Indolence of the Filipinos is stated to be a study of the reasons why
the people did not work as hard as they were supposed to during the Spanish occupation.
Rizal stated that the Filipinos were industrious and hardworking even before the arrival of
the Spaniards. Because of the following factors, the Spanish monarchy resulted in a drop-in
economic activity.
LETTER TO THE YOUNG WOMEN OF MALOLOS
Rizal wrote this letter, which was originally written in Tagalog, on February 22,1889, while
in London, in response to del Pilar's request. We know that in the past, young women were
ignorant due to the belief that they would soon be spouses, and their primary job would be
to care for the home and their children. In this letter, Rizal expresses his desire for women
to have the same educational possibilities as males. One of the most important aspects in
this message is the rejection of the friars' spiritual authority - not all of the priests in the
country at the time embodied Christ's and HisChurch's authentic spirit.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF FILIPINO MOTHERS TO THEIR CHILDREN
In this section of his letter to the young women of Malolos, Rizal emphasizes a few key
issues. However, the essential premise is that whatever a mother demonstrates to her
children is what the children will become as well. If the mother is constantly kissing the
friars' hands in servitude, her children will grow up to be slaves and mindless fools who do
nothing but do as they are told, even if the task itself violates their own rights.
2. ESSAY WRITING: Write a speech that will serve as a response to Rizal’s
prediction/prophecies of the Philippines a century after his time.
Rizal made the following predictions in his most prescient essay, The Philippines Century
Hence, written in 1889, and in his December 15, 1896, memorandum for use by his
counsel: one, "the Philippines will one day declare herself independent"; two, "the great
American Republic with interests in the Pacific...may one day think of acquiring
possessions beyond the seas"; three, "the Philippines will defend with indescribable
ardor the liberty she bought at such a high price", four, “Japan will swallow us”; five, “once
liberated the Philippines will, perhaps, establish a federal republic”; and six, “the
Philippines will, perhaps, enter openly the wide road of progress and will work jointly to
strengthen the Mother Country at home, as well as abroad…”With the exception of two, all
of his forecasts had come true. Malacañang is now pushing federalism aggressively, while
Congress, as a constituent assembly, is set to do so as well. Rizal’s vision for the future of
the country is truly unexplainable. He had come forth with the aforementioned prophecies
just by using the current information which he only had at that time. With Rizal’s intelligence
to have come up with those predictions, I think it’s also affected by his blissful visions which
he had in mind for the country. And that, I think is really something which the Filipinos need
to recognize
